PeerTube Security Update :flan_hacker:PeerTube v8.1.6, released earlier this week, patched some serious vulnerabilities that were exploited on some instances.
Solomon has a [good writeup](https://blog.solomon.tech/posts/may-peertube-security-incident/ ) and postmortem.
Our instance, [Exquisite.tube](https://exquisite.tube ) was patched within one hour of the release. We did investigate this issue and weren't affected by it. We continue to monitor the situation closely.
If you are running your own instance: you should upgrade **right now**, the release notes (from v8.1.6 onwards) contain the relevant info on how to check and mitigate these issues.
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you need help. Keeping the Fediverse safe and sound is a shared responsibility.

Important announcementWe were notified by the great folks at @npub1y2r…kvzk that we had two accounts suspected as being part of a coordinated Russian bot network involving thousands of LLM-supported automated accounts.
Upon further investigation, this suspicion seems to be correct. We have suspended the accounts immediately. Further digging in, we've found a third account, which was also suspended.
In an addition, we have reported the email domains (which seem to be randomly generated) to the relevant parties.

As a countermeasure, we have disabled invites on [Exquisite.social](https://exquisite.social ) as they bypass account approval.

Right now, the Dutch law doesn't mandate age verification. It is unlikely to happen short term, but not impossible.
We are currently exploring mitigative measures should such a law ever came into effect. We will never comply with such a law on the "Exquisite-verse".
Age verification is wrong on so many levels that elaborating it would become nothing short of an essay. So we'll leave that as an exercise for the reader.

Incident reportOur mailserver - mx1.exqinfra.nl - temporary had delivery issues. Due to a syntax error in the zone config, the PTR (reverse DNS) record was broken.

Time for a small update on what has been going on behind the scenes:<li>We are migrating our storage backend from Minio to SeaweedFS. Blowfish do like to swim between the seaweed, rather than an ocean of crap. The storage backend is shared across our services (Mastodon, Peertube and soon others).</li><li>Next we'll roll out the first service from Exquisite.chat - a full blown, OMEMO compatible XMPP server. Once done, an IRC server will follow - and hopefully we succeed in bridging the two of 'em. </li><li>We are looking into options for SSO, where our members can have a single handle / nickname across the services.</li><li>And while doing all this, we are writing docs as we go. The goal for the documentation is not just to offer transparency, but to share the tools and knowledge so that others can selfhost the Fedi too and replicate our setup. </li>
This year, we'll double down on liberating the social web. 2026 promises to be a truly Exquisite year. :flan_hacker: :flan_heart:

Incident report**Oopsie!** Both our Mastodon and Peertube instance had a small outage, which was caused by @npub1y90…900y hacking away a bit too hard. More specifically, this caused our Valkey store to segfault hard. Fixing it took about 20 minutes, as some recompiling was needed.
Sincere apologies for the inconvenience - thank you for being awesome and sticking with us.
The /var/log is undergoing scrutiny by #APT77, before lecturing h3artbl33d on how he should hack in a testing VM, rather than on production :flan_hacker:

Updates!Buh-bye Redis :flan_wave: Welcome to Valkey :flan_hurrah:
During the update early September, we've noticed that the new Sidekiq version that Mastodon uses, a newer version of Redis was required. We couldn't satisfy that dependency because it wasn't available.
This required a custom patch and had our instance on the older Sidekiq version. Until now, that is! Inspired by the best barista, Stefano, we've setup a jail on HardenedBSD, slapped Valkey in it, connected the fibers and did some plumbing :flan_hacker:
And here we are. Newest Valkey, newest Sidekiq and with more memory appointed to it than you could possibly phantom.##

Maintenance announcementThe media backend (S3) will be briefly unavailable this morning, due to updates. This unfortunately does require a reboot; the downtime will be < 10 minutes.
We are working on adding some redundancy for the main apps (Mastodon, Peertube), but this unfortunately will not go for our backend. 48TB is a lot to add redundancy.
We do use ZFS RAID and we do have backups, naturally.

We have just rolled out EXQ2.13 on our Mastodon instance. This update pulls in the new glitch-soc code that fixes the broken "Private mentions" page, which was an upstream issue.
One of our members reported this, but had to backlog it for some days due to us being at the fantastic #EuroBSDcon. Apologies for the delay.

Instance rules updateWe have made a slight modification to our instance rules, specifically added rule # 8, as an extension:
> Also strictly prohibited is misinformstion (eg: anti-vaxx, WHO conspiracies, 5G being used for mindcontrol, anti-GrapheneOS shilling). This will also get you permanently banned and at risk of being yeeted into space.
The misinformation policy was already in place on [our Peertube instance](https://exquisite.tube ) and now reflected on Mastodon as well. We have added @npub1kwa…e0nj, to take a really clear stance against the abuse that the project had and has to endure.
We did not have misinformation before - just laying out the foundation for our lovely and growing community.
