i'm not surprised, considering how complicated the taproot key derivation scheme is that there was more unrelated things brought in with it.
but considering only like 15% of nodes are running taproot code, can you explain how the rest of them are still processing these bloated transactions?

with the abrupt merging of a 12 hour old pull request by @nprofile…p9k6 that removes all of the authors from the plaintext of the NIP documents, and without having given the time for all of the relevant contributors to give theri consent, or lack thereof for this change, THE NOSTR has now become a closed private larp, and there will be a fork and breakaway project.
i'm not starting said project, but i predict that this will happen within 3 months.
i'm also now of the opinion that every single one of those who consented this are not trustworthy individuals, and being that most of them are app developres and major relay operators, i'm abandoning this platform.
the appearance of the reject by pubkey notices yesterday and the removal of the names of NIP contributors was no coincidence.
there is a coordinated action going on behind the scenes and the real people in control do not want it know that there is a management team behind this project.
this makes it extremely suspicious and i'm done contributing to it.
my pubkey is now being purged from my storage.

a little tl;dr on taproot, segwit and ordinals
taproot is a type of HD key scheme where you have the parent key and then a "tweak" value.
a simple taproot key can have no tweak, and its derived private key is the hash of the original private key, and the public key is derived from that.
a taproot key with a tweak is where you concatenate the private key with an arbitrary string of bytes, in a similar way as a HD key derivation, but of course it can be anything, even the binary bytes of a compiled ethereum solidity script.
it is not material to bitcoin what you used in the tweak, it does not interpret it.
it is not material to bitcoin that there is any tweak at all, this is all inside the key generation and derivation process.
it took me a while to wrap my head around it, because in the code it seems like all this derivation is important, but it is not.
the receiver must have the private key and the "tweak" values in order to spend the received sats.
the derived private key that generated the address is not normally stored in the algorithms, but it could be.
TAPROOT IS JUST A SCHNORR SIGNATURE BASED KEY.
segwit, on the other hand, the cryptography of it is not so important to how it works as the fact that it allows you to make transactions with extremely large amounts of arbitrary data, after opcodes like OP_RETURN.
until 2021, nobody really seriously exploited this for anything much larger than about 20kb. then someone dumped a transaction using segwit with over 30kb of data in it, some 999 signatures or something, and lightning was broken temporarily because BTCD code had put a limit, that is not specified in the segwit BIP, as a protection against resource exhaustion attacks.
then the light dawned to the shitcoiner community that they could drive up bitcoain fees and clog the chain by publishing huge transactions, so tehy cooked up scamms like Ordinals, to make their justification for making transactions with ginormous amounts of data in them, and the miners of course were ok with this because during the bear markets tx volumes are thinner and the block rewards are thus lower.
shitcoiners and miners are who benefit from segwit.
segwit was not essential for Lightning. it just made it a bit more secure.
at the time, Schnorr signatures were an option that was discussed, but it was rejected.
this was the wrong decision, obviously.
i don't know how bitcoin is going to recover from the spamfest that ordinals created, but please....
it's not taproot that enabled ordinals, it was segwit.

using taproot addresses in a protocol doesn't make taproot responsible for doing it. ordinals were made possible by segwit.
taproot addresses are just a type of HD key scheme that lets you make a receive address that signals two specific keys, a master and a tweak value, which yes can be a smart contract hash.
but it's got nothing to do with the bitcoin protocol how you use it.

taproot is nothing, it changes only a signature verification algorithm. everything else is external to bitcoin. taproot tweaks are just a way for a receiver to tag a payment inbound as being related to another thing.

yes, i did all that because it's needed for nostr. the rest of btcd code can be avoided if nostr is your main target.

check the version and date on that.
they haven't fixed this, yes i filed an issue, about a year ago, and if you naively try to import lnwire, for, things ilke, you know, millisats units, hoooeeee. lol! have fun staying extremely frustrated at go mod tidy.

Rust is promoted by Mozilla and 90% of shitcoin projects are also working with or adopting it, so that is irrelevant. not to mention what a terrible design it has for memory management, for a minimal benefit compared to Go and a huge complexity in learning compared to C++.
the btcd/lnd codebase is a mess, and an embarrassment to any competent programmer. see my previous comment regarding the state of it, and my experiences with trying to contribute to it.

their taproot code is taken from decred's codebase, for one thing. it doesn't have full implementation of BIP-340, despite this, it fails on the last 4 tests in the suite, and i fixed it and pointed them to it in an issue but i got some dodge from roasbeef about why they didn't properly implement the tests. (for irregular length message signing).
as a Go dev trying to work with bitcoin and lightning their BTCD and LND codebases are a shitstorm of stupid. the damn btcd has dependencies to prior versions of itself, just for starters. the configuration system on both btcd and lnd doesn't work. i've tried to put some PRs up to get a few things fixed but they never merge them. even tried to chase an actual issue they had filed, that issue is still there, the patch is still dangling, and would take about two hours to merge in.

the next big area of development of #bitcoin will be around the mempool.
currently it uses a naive gossip protocol to distribute transactions, but it would be possible to add new mechanisms to this while not affecting those that don't adopt it, but adding solutions for problems introduced by segwit and RBF.
it also could potentially lead to solutions for LN and other L2/L3 systems that are badly affected by the simple gossip protocol used by the mempool.
LN showed that two party transaction update games can become relatively secure. there should be ways to make multiparty transaction update schemes secure as well, which would enable some parts of LNs benefits directly in the bitcoin network instead of at a second layer.

essentially segwit made it possible to stuff large inscriptions on chain where before segwit there was major limits on this.
you may recall an incident where a massive transaction blocked up btcd and stalled many LND/BTCD based lightning nodes. this was because the segwit spec does not place a limit on witness size, it can literally fill the full 4mb of a block.
it was my opinion at the time of that incident, that it was just the beginning of a flood of garbage scams exploiting this vulnerability, and i've been thoroughly proven correct in the meantime.
i believe it would be possible to essentially soft fork segwit back off but the miners won't stop running segwit support, because full blocks means more fees for them. it only takes a few full nodes supporting it for the transactions to get to the miners and end up in the blocks.
unfortunately, the pandora's box is open.
taproot is allowing us to potentially write wallet/transaction schemes now that are massively compressed compared to prior protocols, anything involving multiparty can now be greatly shrank because only one signature is needed, 64 bytes, whereas before there had to be a signature for each address involved and this also was bad for opsec.
taproot schnorr signatures allow lightning transactions to be smaller also, and to be indistinguishable from normal transactions and for coinjoin and payjoins to also go under the radar. we are just waiting for this to be supported by applications basically, and for nodes to support it.
it's my opinion that someone should go through the old bitcoin core versions and backport taproot onto them, because it doesn't introduce vulnerabilities, unlike segwit, and encourage old node runners to patch to support taproot.

we didn't need it for lightning, lightning already had all the tools required.
it enabled the current spam scamming ordinals and bitmap theory bullshit.
it was underspecified, it gave no limitations on the size of transaction witnesses.
schnorr signatures and a sane nonce-based signature protocol would have fixed malleability better than segwit. literally could have just been an extra 8 bytes with a fixed 64 byte signature.
it would have obsoleted multisig transactions completely
it would make lightning and other layer 2/3 anchoring transactions indistinguishable from others
it would have made coinjoin and payjoin protocols more private and easy to implement.
all of this is of course wishful thinking. we have got taproot now, which can enable most of that, but we have got a huge problem of miner-beneficial spammy transactions that are diminishing the utility of on chain transactions by inflating fees, and increasing the data size requirement of the chain.
when the bull run comes, it's not gonna matter so much, but the halving is still 3-4 months away and at that point the miner driven pumping of scams to fill blocks will start to slow down until next time.
and maybe someone will come up with ways to defeat the scammy shit.
i personally have my eyes on working on changes in the soft consensus of the mempool, changes that will be compelling and lead to a shift in focus away from the chain and more into the live transaction stream.

i didn't want the changes. i was against segwit fwiw. as a developer, i hate how complicated the whole thing has got.
the biggest problem with it is that segwit doesn't set a limit on how much witness a transaction can use. in theory, one can jam one transaction into one block, if one has the several bitcoin fee required to displace all competing tx's.
the problem doesn't really hurt miners, so we can't find a solution that benefits them and prevents the spam. users could do things to reduce it, but at best they would only slow the ingress of these garbage transactions to the nodes feeding miners block templates.
the pandora's box is already open now, and lightning is still in beta and shit is just gonna be messy for a while.
money touches everyone's life, so it's an unfortunate consequence that it also is of far greater interest to psychopaths wanting to indulge themselves in ill gotten wealth for the various services it provides, that the fight is extra intense.

this is what the "gossip model" and the "HORNET Storage" project FOREST protocol are about. gossip is not scalable, it requires all nodes to be equally large and shakes out the small ones. while self custody is still a minefield for newbies and some think adoption at all costs is worth it, this is precisely an object lesson in why it's better for technical people to be the focus of this stage of development, and influencoors to consider the danger they are creating by putting "go self custodial" as a headline and not considering how many sats the LSPs might hit you for, or the not so infrequent occurrance of stuck payments getting stuck for days, even over a week.
we can't have mass adoption of beta grade tech without blowback, and we can't have it without custodians protecting the safety of users funds.
