Had quite the day yesterday.
Up at 6am to prepare breakfast for my working wife, did a 30min weights workout, ironed a pile of clothes, did the weekly shop, mowed the lawn and weeded the patio, made lunch for wife, brief rest then made early dinner because was spending the last three hours of daylight building this with two pals from my conservation group.
I can't get off the sofa this morning!

@nprofile…gqp6 This is a great thread and has persuaded me to give audiobooks a try - I currently use BorrowBook and Libby to access the ebook collections of my two local authority libraries, which is great so long as they have the books I'm looking for (they usually do but sometimes there's a long waiting list).
Hopefully Libro.fm has an iPhone/iPad app?

I just found a grasshopper in my conservatory where it was swelteringly hot - I caught the wee guy safely and took him outside, where he promptly boinged off into the cool of the bushes. Job done 😁

I always feel a little embarrassed when I am followed on Mastodon by someone whose entire bio and posts are in a language I don't speak or understand, because I assume they speak or understand my language as well as their own.
I know some basic French and Spanish - enough not to starve - but not enough to converse freely. Not yet, at least.

@nprofile…a95k Having just replaced Windows 11 on my laptop with MX Linux I can now relax, safe in the knowledge that I have a fast, stable and powerful machine that no longer runs like a sloth or which constantly nags me to sign up for garbage services designed solely to make money from me. I choose when or if I update, and everything just works exactly how it should. What a blessed relief.

@nprofile…73zx Think of it as my punishment for not having a proper, streamlined backup system in place all these years. Instead of organising my archive on one drive, I had folders on all sorts of drives. Flickr was the only place where I had everything in one place. Lesson learned 🙄🫩

I have been having terrible problems downloading more than a decade’s-worth of photos from my Flickr Pro archive via the iPad app, despite repeated support requests, so I am downloading all of my archive to my iMac to store on an external 1TB SSD.
Each one of those zip files is about 4GB and after a full day, I’m barely half way 🙄🤬

MX Linux, on the other hand, immediately detected my WiFi adapter and I was up and running at blisteringly fast speed when compared to Winblows 11 within just a few minutes. #Linux

Finally tired of the epically slow Windows 11 install on my Dell Latitude laptop so downloaded the latest Linux Mint (Cinnamon flavour), did the old f12-restart routine to change the boot sequence and ran live Mint from a USB drive.
Was just about to install Mint to the HD when I realised it hadn't detected my laptop's wireless adaptor, which is very unusual for Mint.
Bugger 🤬

The woodland where I volunteer as a conservationist is literally buzzing with pollinators at the moment, with bees, hoverflies and wasps abounding among the willowherb and meadowsweet. This is from earlier today.

I mentioned here earlier that I help to look after a local woodland, and part of that has involved recording wildlife, birds and insects to build a picture of the biodiversity we have.
In just two weeks I have found nine different species of ladybirds in one tiny section of the wood, plus a Harlequin larvae and a pupae.
Here they all are, identifications in the Alt-text and please note, there are several different forms of 10-spot ladybirds.

It's the last Saturday of the month - work party day for our merry band of conservation volunteers - and today I shall be up to my neck in stinging nettles and brambles, helping to clear invasive Himalayan balsam from my local wood.
The marshy area where it is proliferating has flag iris and marsh marigolds, beautiful native plants which are being choked out by the prolific invader.
I'll be going into the marsh via the stream.
Cover me, I'm going in. 🫣

Sitting on the bank of a small burn flowing through my local wood, feeling philosophical and realising that just a small obstruction changes the flow of the water, but the water adapts, it persists and continues on a new path. It seemed like a small but important lesson. Be like water.

@nprofile…7p2x I've just ordered a used Panasonic GX80 with the 12-32mm pancake kit lens as an everyday carry/street camera which should dovetail nicely with my fairly extensive OM-1 kit (12-40mm f2.8 Pro, 40-150mm f4 Pro, 90mm macro Pro and 100-400mm Pro), so I'm interested in your recommendations for tiny Panasonic lenses, especially around the 35-150mm range (I like to keep the camera and lens brands matched).

@nprofile…8ttk We only use the soft light under the fire surround, and the down lighters under the kitchen cabinets in the whole of downstairs, and only put them on when the ambient light from outside disappears. The thought of having to use my phone or tablet to control the lights fills me with bewilderment. For the same Luddite reason, I shake my head with despair when I see the TV ads for electronic toothbrushes with Bluetooth 🤦🏻‍♂️

Ferns have been on Earth since before the dinosaurs, with the earliest dated back to the Devonian and Triassic eras.
They spread via spores, which can be seen here on the back of the beautiful, delicate leaves.
I love ferns for their visual symmetry and repetition, they're so elegant yet so persistent, and the way they unfurl is fascinating.

True 1:1 macro photography lenses can be expensive but there are other, cheaper options, like the Viltrox x2 magnification clip-on lens.
These were taken with the £80 Viltrox on my OM Zuiko 40-150mm f4 PRO lens and OM-1 II, and as far as I can see there's no degradation in image quality.
I even managed to capture my own reflection in the shiny abdomen of a green bottle fly!

Finding and recording insects and wild creatures is hard. Recording them in a way that has artistic merit is even harder, especially when they won't stay still!

Obviously Live ND has other applications, like long exposures, where it definitely is good enough to replace physical filters, but much of ICM is experimental and having to dip into the menu system to alter the strength of the Live ND interrupts your flow quite a lot.
Thankfully, with cheap step-up rings I'm able to reuse my variable ND filters from my old Fujifilm days, where filter sizes were larger.

My OM System OM-1 II has several computational modes, including Live ND (Neutral Density).
It takes several exposures at differing shutter speeds and blends them in-camera to create the same effect as an ND filter.
I wondered if this would work for #ICM images and, while it does (if you remember to turn off IBIS!), it's not as intuitive or versatile as having a variable ND filter on the lens.
Here's an example of the Live ND effect.

Look at the crazy patterned eyes on this little charmer - it's a Notch-Horned Cleg, and yes, those are my trousers it's trying to bite me through! Thankfully, they're pretty tough outdoor trousers and I escaped with all my blood where it's meant to be!

Ladybirds, all found within a small section of my local mixed coniferous/deciduous woodland.
I did find one other species, a seven-spot, the following day, plus several other variants of the ten-spot.
Incredible variety in such a small area.
