She's interesting...I find Hannah Berrelli and Dr. Jen Izaakson really interesting too. I like it when women push the boundaries of what I think and switch up ways we can interpret things. When a woman is pregnant there’s this belief that she can “mark” or influence her baby, sometimes it comes in the form of a birthmark or it can even be a personality thing. Like if she is craving something, or if something scares her or captivates her, the infant might show signs of it. A couple examples I know of - my mamaw loved to eat strawberries when she was pregnant with my dad and would lay in the sun and basically eat til she got sick, and he was born with a mark that was the very picture of a strawberry. My great aunt was pregnant in Chicago and was always visiting a zoo and feeling sorry for the monkeys, and her son was born with a gigantic birthmark - basically a monkey arm - that had to be surgically removed. One woman was startled when she shattered a tea cup and the baby was born with a tea cup birthmark. :)

Appalachian “superstitions” and legends are real, don’t ask me how or try to talk me out of it. We say that death always comes in 3s, that birds are omens, that dreams are portents, that you can mark a baby during your pregnancy (I’ve seen this!), and I’ve known women who could stop a bleed or talk the fire out of a burn. When I was a baby, though I don’t remember and have only my relatives’ accounts to go on, they took me to a woman named Berth who’d never met her daddy and she blew in my mouth 3 times to cure my “thrash.” She took it on herself. I have stories of a woman named Evangeline who’d make abortifacient teas for women who’d been raped, or already had a dozen children.
Thinking about this because Death visited me 3 times this month. My uncle Cecil, my Rosie, and now my aunt Beatrice. Hopefully Death is satisfied for a little while. Tide me over for another year, O Death.

My Episcopal church family made me feel so loved after the loss of my Rosie. They didn’t laugh when I asked for a mention of her in our newsletter, and instead scheduled on a week night a liturgy for my beloved baby.

Wonder how accurate these DNA testing sites are? Before I considered the privacy concerns, I submitted mine to 23andMe, years ago. They’ve updated my results since and they’re fascinating. Of course it’s my matrilineal line because I’m female, and I wish I had names and stories for all these women.

Going through old photos with my parents earlier and found this gem. This is my great-great-mamaw Polly. Family lore says a man did her wrong, so she had her son Levi lure him to her home and the she bludgeoned him to death. Her hands are gnarled and I know she had a hard and spare life. Wish we knew more about her.

I’m the same, always trying to teach myself something. Kinda like a Jack of some trades, master of none 😂 I always go back to knitting, but I’ve tried my hand at embroidery and baking. I’d love to learn something like woodworking. My dad and I have some car projects we’re working on, so he can teach me basic car maintenance. And I’ve got plans to build a tiny home on wheels, someday. He’s gonna show me how to plumb and wire it, and we’re gonna possibly dig a well.

Thank you for linking this. Reading now - just popped back to say, I think one of the reasons I'm always so confused with feminist in-fighting is I've sort of romanticized the movement in my head, the way I've always lionized women in general. I had no self-identifying "feminists" in my life growing up, found everything through reading and only got exposed to feminism as a movement in my late teens through a scholarship program where 2 women came from the University of Kentucky (and were run out, by men and women alike) to speak to us students, so I have a probably very naive view of solidarity and sisterhood from not having had the experience of in-person organizing with other feminists. By the time I was a college student it was liberal feminism everywhere, and that didn't appeal to me. I didn't circle back and find radical feminism until my late 20s, and I'm now 36 and land-locked. I don't think I know any women in my circle who would say they're feminists in the mainstream sense, let alone radical feminists. So as I'm trying to connect and expand and grow, I'm realizing belatedly that it's not all rosy, accepting, etc. I see what I think is a lot of internalized and externalized misogyny in how women identifying as feminists interact when they disagree, but I won't be put off. I just ask for patience as I learn which minefields I care to step into and which I'd rather avoid lol

Ohhhh, now I see. I have been experimenting with Twitter (X, whatever), and this is a topic that seems to come up routinely on there. I'm not someone who's been very active on social media consistently, so I'll admit I can seem a little daft. My first experience online as a radfem was on Facebook way back in like 2014, 2015, and there was so much drama around that then I sort of...left social media behind for a while. It was a confusing time for me, and I remember being saddened (and honestly frightened) at the cancellations and name-calling and misogyny being thrown around even then. It wasn't my intention to bring up a contentious issue among feminists, especially when I'm only getting comfortable being myself and airing my views publicly again, and feeling a desire to be a part of a community of feminists.

So do I! I've been searching, searching for women's separatist writings. I discovered Cell 16, but can't find copies of their newsletters. I've bought "The Spinster and Her Enemies," and tried to research the lesbian separatist efforts, as well as things about celibacy and woman-centeredness among women who (like me) have been primarily attracted physically to men. I have an ebook I haven't read yet by Susan Hawthorne called "In Defence of Separatists." Can you recommend anything related to this?

The hills are turning colors, and look so pretty. Unfortunately the surface mine up the holler is visible from my great-aunt’s place. My dad is a miner, like his dad was before him, but I think all the time that even though it was those wages that put food on the table and sent me to college and clothed me…male violence and male domination are not limited to destruction of the female body. Men destroy the earth. Destroy animals. They shackle other men to these male-dominated industries of destruction, through male-crafted economic systems and industries. The world is beautiful, my home is beautiful, but nothing is free from the stain of men’s insatiable hunger for destruction in the name of “progress,” which they define and they condone and they excuse. Days like today I want to escape them, anything their hands can touch, but I don’t know where on earth I could go.

Struggling finding connections with other women, unfortunately. I love this space, so thankful for it, and would like to build community here and elsewhere. I just don't really know where to go to have conversations and spend time with other women. I live in eastern Kentucky, and most of my friends are married with children. I've chosen to remain single (I would love to go full separatist) and am childless, and it often feels like friendship takes a backseat when women build families. My "politics" are another issue - not many open radical feminists in eastern Kentucky that I can find, and the friends I made in college are pretty libfem-y. I would say my only close friends are hours and miles and miles away, and there is a serious brain drain here. My region like so many others is suffering and women I meet are more focused on subsistence than anything else. I wanna get active in my community, but I'd also just like women who are more aligned with me to talk to. Have any of you found any luck meeting women for friendship on apps like Bumble? I've applied for an access code to OvarIt, but I'm stumped as where to make meaningful connections. I tried Discord but I'm 36 and those chats trend pretty young...
