We have clay soil so I put bout 3 inches of sand in my garden. That accomplishes several things. The sand allows water to drain away. It also prevents weeds from growing since it dries out fast and doesn't hold enough moisture for them to germinate - this can be tricky because seeds must be planted deep enough for them to reach the soil.
