Well, when some people do something "in the name of <something>" - that <something> starts to carry the weight of the actions taken, deserved or not. Christianity, Islam, communism, fascism, capitalism, "free Palestine", "for mother russia" etc. That is how concept labeling works. So we simplify, for the sake of brevity and to satisfy the limit of characters in a toot. That is also why I said "99%" in my post, allowing for some statistically insignificant exceptions to the general rule.

The wisdom of empiricism lies in understanding that if you have already burned your hand by touching the fire, there is no reasonable justification to lean out and touch it again. The problem with westerners-communists is that they live in a dimension of pure fiction, out of touch with reality, without having experienced the actual attempts to implement their ideals.
And the guy on the original image, now detained in russia - is the prime example of a lack of such wisdom.

That is my point. Idealistic reasoning is deeply flawed, because ideals can never be achieved in reality - hence the word "ideal". And the only rational way to make decisions is to be based in empiricism. No single attempt to build "communism" has succeeded so far. Only poverty, misery and mass murder as an outcome. Why should I entrust you my life this time? Why should it be different? Based on what assumptions?

No pseudo <any> society ever claimed they achieved whatever they claimed to do. There is always "one more step required", a neverending story. Which means you can say there were never true "capitalists", "socialists" "fascists", "theocrats". A universal excuse to suggest trying again and again. Which gets us back to the original premise - only self-identification matters, as a guideline of what to expect from you, based on previous attempts. You say communism, I remember Holodomor.

I believe you miss the point here. There are no objective criteria to subjective views (personal or collective). So yes, GDR was a perfect democracy from their subjective point of view. Just like USSR, China, Cambodia etc. - were perfect communist societies from their point of view. Just like with people's self-assumed genders - who are you to say otherwise?
