The mistake is in the order of operations, but it is not mine. Virtue without liberty is forced virtue, which as I said originally, is an oxymoron. Forced virtue is simply unthinking compliance, and unthinking compliance is not a virtue. Even God wants us to think as we attempt to comply with His law. However, order and virtue are not the same thing and we should consider the two separately.
"For Machiavelli, the key factor that made Republican government possible was the virtue of the people. Under a monarchy, the people didn't need to practice a high degree of self discipline. The king provided order, and that order allowed the people to prosper even if they didn't have the character to rule themselves."
This is exemplary of the propensity of right wingers to use the word "order" without defining it. Order is the degree to which individuals can be comfortable that their person and property are not in imminent danger of being violated. Some kings may have provided some degree of order at some times by providing a level of protection of persons and property from violators other than the king and his agents, but it is important to remember that each king is also to a lesser or greater degree an agent of disorder himself. The private thieves and murders which the king would, on occasion, protect individuals against were not the only violators of person and property, but the king himself obtained his vast wealth by performing the same type of violations he claimed to protect against.

Order is more necessary for human *survival* than freedom, but for human *flourishing* liberty is more important. Order predates widespread material prosperity, which is what I assume is meant by human flourishing in this context. If order alone were sufficient for increases in material prosperity then we should expect the historical record to reflect material prosperity increases commensurately with increases in order, and this is demonstrably not the case. Order is necessary to maintain what has been achieved, but to go beyond that and build something new liberty is required. Increases in material prosperity require trying new ideas or techniques for production, which is the job of the entrepreneur. Neither a king nor a modern nation state can effectively do the job of an entrepreneur and entrepreneurs can only exist within a framework of not only order but also liberty, as they must be free to experiment and take risk (liberty) while also perceiving no imminent threat to their person or property (order).

I don't think this framing is correct, I think this is a far more accurate summary:
Order and community are inextricably linked, there is a causality going in both directions. Order cannot be obtained by an individual alone, nor can a community be maintained if people are not secure in their persons and property to a large degree. Community and order are both preconditions for liberty, as without the assurances of security in person and property (both physical security as well as normative security) provided by the community then the exercise of liberty is impossible as the struggle to survive is all-consuming. Liberty is a prerequisite for virtue as virtue can only truly be achieved when the vast majority of the individuals within the community choose to be virtuous of their own volition. This choice is only possible when unvirtuous choices are both presented (liberty) and declined (true virtue), otherwise any virtue is merely forced virtue, which is not virtue at all.

It is certainly true that liberty without virtue is ruinous. However what I’ve never heard the right wingers making this argument explain is how you can build a virtuous society without liberty?
Liberty is a necessary (though insufficient) prerequisite for virtue, because virtue cannot be real without both the availability of the path to dishonor and the choice on the part of the individual not to take that path. Forced virtue is an oxymoron, anyone arguing for it has the causality reversed at best.

However I seriously question these numbers. The entire market cap of gold is around $16 trillion. Let’s be exceedingly generous and say that 1/4 of that was stolen.
That would still leave $46 trillion left of the claimed number that was stolen in Iraq. The worldwide annual production of oil is ~$2 trillion. Again let’s be exceedingly generous and say 1/4 of that was stolen too. At that rate of theft, you’d still need 96 years to completely close the remaining gap to get to those claimed numbers. Given that the US invaded Iraq in 2003 then they’ve just passed 20% of the way there.
Even assuming the entire $16T market cap of gold was stolen and the entire $2T worldwide annual production of crude oil was stolen, that would still take 17 years to add up to $50 trillion. It would’ve taken from 2003 to 2020 where there was absolutely zero gold anywhere and absolutely zero gasoline and other petroleum products. We would have noticed that one.
This is besides the fact that if Iraq had $50 trillion dollars in wealth in 2003 they’d have certainly been able to fund a military that would’ve been a far more serious threat in the conventional sense to the invading US forces. This also clearly did not happen.
Yes you should question the regime and its horrific policies. Yes you should assume that those operating the regime are acting out of bad faith and for personal gain. However when you throw out claims that are so out of line with anything that is even close to plausible reality you end up hurting your case far more than you help, as you seem like a crackpot to anyone with the patience to spend 5 minutes using a search engine.

Storage is cheap, but the UTXO set has to be kept in RAM, not on the hard drive. All the degen stuff over the last year has bloated the UTXO set significantly. Right now RAM is probably the hardware component of greatest concern when considering the cost of a full node.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I don’t care if other people like and use Monero. However I can say why I don’t.
In my opinion the Bitcoin supply cap, as well as the extremely high assurances that this cap will remain unchanged, is the most important aspect feature of Bitcoin. A supply cap and the verification thereof is something that Monero sacrifices on the alter of privacy, which is why I’m not interested myself.

So about halfway through the Mises Institute podcast episode. A few thoughts so far:
Simon Guenzl starts by making the distinction between state-confiscated land, meaning taken from a specific person or group by the state, and state-claimed land, which is previously unowned land that the state is claiming. I think this is a valuable distinction because these are two different circumstances.
He then goes on to make the case that while state-confiscated land has a definite owner (the person or group from whom the land was confiscated) but state-claimed land is unowned in a libertarian sense rather than owned by the net taxpayers as argued by Hoppe.
While the former point is well taken I don't think I agree with the latter point, at least in most circumstances, for a few reasons.
First, often when land is confiscated by the state through eminent domain or other processes, the rightful owner (victim) is often given some form of compensation for their now-stolen property. If the correct action from a libertarian prospective is to give back the land that was taken (I agree it is) then the question arises who is the rightful owner of the compensation which the state gave to the victim when the land confiscation occurred? Surely that asset (likely money) is not unowned, I would contend that it is rightfully owned by the taxpayers from whom that money was also confiscated. The victim of land confiscation is entitled to get back what was stolen from them, but does not get to keep the stolen compensation as well. This indicates that the net taxpayers are owed *something* based on what was taken from them.
Second, I'll start by saying that for state-claimed land that is entirely unimproved, such as a national forest which has been left in a state of nature, I agree with his premise that this is in fact unowned land. However I do not think the same is true of state-claimed land that has been subsequently improved to a point where it would be considered owned land if the improvements had been conducted by a private actor. For example if a private actor were to build a road through otherwise unimproved land, the land upon which they built the road is now owned by them in a libertarian sense. In a similar way, if a state were to confiscate value in the form of taxes, then use that confiscated value to build a road through unimproved land, then in the same way as the first scenario those net taxpayers from whom the value was confiscated are owed compensation for what was taken from them. While the funds which were stolen are no longer available as compensation for them, the road which they were used to build might serve as a form of in-kind compensation.
So far, Mr. Guenzl's arguments have left me unmoved from my position. In my understanding accepting his line of reasoning would lead to one arguing that land confiscation, but not other types of state confiscation, deserve restitution under a libertarian framework. That being said I do think his differentiation of state-confiscated and state-claimed property is a valuable insight.

This one has only been queued up so I haven’t listened yet, but it sounds interesting. Possibly also relevant insofar as refining the framing of ideas is likely to improve argumentation.
Going in I’m personally more in agreement with the Hoppe position, though I don’t think the case is as rock-solid as some influencers might argue.
