short answer: i don't really have enough experience to have a modus operandi and am trying lots of different things.
in the past i've used both commercial and studio glazes at cone 9 and cone 6.
but this piece is my first time working with terracotta, and since terracotta needs a much lower firing tempurature than anything i've done before, I am trying something new.
on this piece i plan on using a studio made terra sigillata and stains, but i'm not sure what cone yet, because our kilns have been broken for a few months and i havn't been able to do test tiles.
hopefully i've sort of answered your question...

according to google, it's because the old english word "thrawan" meant to twist or turn, and was used to describe making pottery because the wheelhead turns round and round. the common meaning of "throw" (the derivative of "thrawan") has changed in modern english, but the "throw" is apparently still being used to describe the making of pottery.
so basically it's an etymology thing
Like you @npub1q6y…t3sh, I would have guessed that the reason it was called throwing literally involved flying clay. Once somebody who was throwing next to me didn't lock down his bat down correctly to the wheelhead and the piece flew off a remarkable distance, passing just above my piece and below my nose.

this piece is about the frustration in life that we all experience.
for whatever reason, i really am drawn to drawing and sculpting very intense, exaggerated facial expressions, especially angry, disgusted, or stressed wrinkles. they are just fun to look at and draw/sculpt in my opinion.
in addition to this, i also think by exaggerating emotions to a ridiculous extant makes them seem silly and allows for me to take a step back and laugh at myself and how worked up i can get in my own frustrations.
in this way, i can sort of free myself from the heat of the moment.
a couple topics of frustration i intend to address in this piece are:
the destructive nature of consumerism, especially media consumption.
my personal discomfort in my perception of race, especially my own.
the (occasionally) harmful pressure of social norms
status anxiety
as i continue to work on this piece, i plan to explicate these topics with my surface design.

i have been sculpting this bust a while now. this is my first time and i quickly found out that sculpting a human is difficult.

decided to redo the eyes once which was depressing.

a piece i was sculpting december 2023. it finally came out of the cone 6 firing the other day.
i originally had this crazy idea to install a pump and make this piece a fountain, but it cracked really badly and the top part fused to the base, so i think we're going to jump ship on that idea.
putting yer piece in the kiln is a subtle form of torture.
