the developments at gitlab feel unsettling. we have all our sources in a self hosted gitlab since a long time, and migrating to i.e. forgejo would be a big undertaking, with the tons of deeplinks from our docs into the repositories, a bunch of tricked-out CI yamls etc. and we're under a lot of pressure to ship hardware atm, so i can't pick that battle right now :/

pondering to upgrade from fp5 to fp6:
—the new toggle switch could really work for me because i often have to switch between dnd and normal mode, but on my fp5 android the button is often broken (doesn't react) in quick settings
—now that i have a lot of pictures on the phone, the camera sometimes doesn't save quickly enough so i lose photos or get motion blurry photos. also the camera often overexposes by default, which is supposedly better on the fp6
i don't really have cash at the moment tho

well the qcs6490+qcs8550 projects share the same pcb design as the thundercomm modules have a mostly compatible pin layout, so we can do the bringup in a kind of overlapped way. there's also lots of stuff that's not working yet. for me it's very important to see as quickly as possible how well cpu+gpu work with real-world applications before sinking too much time and effort into a module. performance validation so to speak

i removed all 32GB RAM options from our shop for now because of the chip shortage. everyone that ordered it will still get it though! that includes people who bought MNT Reform Next and RCORE on Crowd Supply. Firefly (and others) tell us that they can't get the 32GB chips at the moment. your stuff is now officially rare and sought after! 16GB is now the remaining option. i'm looking into introducing 8GB options but don't have updated prices yet.

oh, got another green tinted PCB photo from JLC for MNT Reform Next's right-hand port board (to confirm parts placement). this one has a lot of superspeed USB going on, including a TI hub and a reclocker/redriver. plus a less exciting HDMI port. here i'll solder in a chip and 2 mid-mount connectors myself to save time.

yesterday i set up an environment for faster kernel development iteration (esp. for rk3588). it builds a monolithic kernel using the patchstack we have for debian kernel version, but on a real git checkout. i can boot the kernel+dtb directly after compiling over the network (tftp) and into a busybox/toybox/static binaries environment to avoid boot times. i then figured out that suspend to s2idle works with that kernel and added the missing code to dts and fw to make it wake via the keyboard.

finally evaluating @npub1ncy…3x0q Plasma desktop for MNT Pocket Reform (with external secondary dell 1440p monitor + mouse + keyboard) and taking notes. it'll need some little tweaks before we can ship it as a default, but so far it feels pretty fantastic. love the configurability and the attention to detail everywhere

on our very recent shipments of MNT laptops to the US, i can see that a number of people had to pay "government charges" via UPS before delivery. there is no transparency on these charges, we can only see the dollar amount. the amount is never the expected 15% (EU->US agreement), but usually around 25%, in some cases more. even taking sales taxes into account it doesn't add up. so far no one can explain to us how the charges are calculated or how to appeal. this is beyond frustrating. any ideas?

i still have to clean up the silkscreen due to some changes but otherwise i'm pretty ok with the layout. compromises: hdmi traces are not coplanar all the way to the end, but i never ever had issues with hdmi SI. focus is on usb3 and pcie, and power. and ethernet is still on an inner layer, but it worked fine before and with correct stackup it should be fine still.

did i get this right? today i really realized that there is really no VAT (value added tax) in the US (because there is a sales tax system?) and so if you imported products from EU countries (example) you don't have to pay any import VAT. this only leaves the special excise tax (gasoline, cigarettes, alcohol?) and tariffs. as a german citizen i always have to pay 19% import VAT to my govt when i import something from the US, so it's mind boggling that this was not an issue for USians so far

bizarro, chatgpt uses a "third party archive site" to access instagram! when questioned, it reveals "piokok" which sounds like gibberish but it's actually real and forwards to a page called "pixnoy" which has up-to-date scraped insta content (100% meta eula violation)... so it looks like one could indeed use one nasty industry as a crowbar for the other (i'd never do this of course and IANAL)

for a thought experiment/obsession i was trying to come up with unconventional ways of how to legally get public information out of instagram (for example to relay to fedi) and realized that meta also have an AI assistant (which can be used without a login!), and i thought maybe it can access instagram posts via some backchannel. but no, and it gets a lot more funny because it makes a list of tools that i'm quite certain violate meta's EULA lmao

i've been a bit more quiet here over the last weeks, but there has been tons of activity at MNT. most importantly: @npub12gl…frt9 has been working tirelessly on building and packaging MNT Reforms and MNT Pocket Reforms (incl. DIY kits), supported in the studio by @npub1xse…lgk3 and @npub1dxr…xc28, and the backlog is shrinking.

ok so mixed feelings first: the first test flex pcbs/cables came from JLC and they look really good. but i did literally all of them wrong and flipped top/bottom contacts on all of them, so can't test. only good for fit testing. meeeh

switch selection for the Reform Next trackpad is finally settled. the kailh pg1316 are good and the available keycaps fit perfectly (in the video are translucent ones, but they also have black and white ones for a cleaner less y2k look if desired)

i'm browsing executive education programs, buuut i guess because of (working) class struggle is real, a common theme is that these are mostly pretty "big picture" oriented and rarely about hands on practical skill building. if i want to offer people in my org (paid by org) practical but advanced skill training courses, i.e. for topics like graphics design, communications, project mgmt, electronics etc, what are the right keywords to look for?
