A personal anecdote:
I spent a lot of my derby career skating in a pretty standard uniform: tank jersey, leggings or athletic shorts, long socks for protection.
But every once and a while I'd skate in booty shorts, or fishnets, or a bikini bottom.
I did it because I wanted to fuck with people, not because I wanted people to think I was sexy. Showing borderline inappropriate amounts of skin was a way for me to say "fuck you, I can kick your ass naked".

The answer to that is that, society conditions us to see physical beauty and desirability as our most important attribute. We are rewarded for looking more conventionally attractive and punished for deviating.
So identifying with objects of desire; dressing as objects of desire - that feels good. Posing for the camera in our heads feels good. Getting positive feedback on our appearance from others feels good.
But it feels good because society tells us it's how we derive our value.

A common reaction to criticism of porny characters is to point to women who like those characters: who find them empowering; who cosplay as those characters; etc.

If you're using an LLM to write code, you need to treat the output exactly the same as a random answer from Stack Overflow, or some shit an intern wrote.
It might be great! It might miss corner cases! It might completely misunderstand the codebase and use APIs incorrectly, or just not compile, or solve the wrong problem!
If you're employed as a software developer, it's *your* responsibility to proofread anything you didn't write yourself (and also, to be fair, the stuff you did actually write)

I used to say that the most important skill I had as a software developer was google-fu, because 99% of the time someone else had already solved the problem I was trying to solve (sorry @npub1tq4…6nqn - you seem to be perennially in that other 1%).
But I never blindly submitted Code I Got From The Internet without at least trying to understand (a) what it did, and (b) why it worked. Also: (c) writing tests to ensure it actually did work.
Sometimes the code snippet from SO was actually kinda bullshit.

If you put your name on a professional product - whether that's a pull request, a legal brief, a business report, or anything else - you are responsible for the quality and correctness of that product.
Corollary: I doesn't matter if you use an LLM, task an intern, hire a temp, or crib from Stack Overflow. You had better be able to vouch for the final product.
If you cannot, you are making it clear that you cannot be trusted to properly do your job.

I am starting to believe that PC gamers think anything less than 120FPS at 4K with max settings is "bad performance" and "unplayable" and "looks terrible".
Either that or I just happen to have one of the most popular gaming laptops of 2022 with a really stock chip and as it turns out the game and all of the drivers are just kinda made for my hardware despite it being underpowered.

I updated my drivers, and despite having just below the recommended specs the game runs... perfectly?
Like, yeah, the textures kinda suck and the characters look like Mass Effect (2007) but my understanding is that that's just the way the game looks; artistic vision and everything.
Given I'm running in 1600x1000 with dynamic resolution, so the game is probably dropping down to like 800x600 during heavy action but I'm not seeing stutters or significant drops.

it's funny because I initially read it as parody; a scathing indictment of the system.
The overbearing teacher abuses the terrified territories, while the Black child is forced to work instead of being educated; the foreign child is left outside in the cold; the Native child is being forced to assimilate without being given any resources; and the mostly white states sit happily ignoring all of this abuse.

It is not possible to have code deal with the real world on its own. The smartest guy cannot code a system that will handle, say, land title (regardless of what the crypto bros would tell you).
Corner cases (and people) will inevitably fall through the cracks; systems will fail; exceptions will happen, and you need humans to deal with that.
Even Amazon, who've come as close to perfecting supply chain as one could, have an army of customer service agents and generous policies to compensate.

It's fine for social media servers to delete posts or censure users who post art that, while not technically illegal, appears to depict sexualized children, or sexualized characters who appear underage (even if they are supposedly a 5,000 year old dragon or sentient anthropomorphic car or some shit).

I sometimes worry that a lot of what is possible is still being dictated by specific technological and architectural choices rather than "what would be best for people".
This is an issue I deal with all the time at work; the kind of "we want experience X but we currently have system Y" and IMO one difference between a good and a great developer is whether they choose Y or X as their starting point for building the thing.

I think they are certainly exploring new paradigms for dealing with especially things like context collapse; I think we also need to look back at ideas like G+ circles as ways to deal with some of the "whom can I see/who can see me" questions.
Regardless, we need to be very open-minded about experimenting with new (and old) tools and see what actually works to achieve the types of spaces we want and then be very deliberate about what we implement and use.

In all seriousness: the reason moose does not umlaut is that it was borrowed from Algonquian "moos" during the Modern English period, over a thousand years after the sound change that produced umlaut.
There have been pre-Old English sound changes that have been generalized to other words, but that's typically Indo European ablaut (e.g. sing -> sang -> sung) which has spread to verbs like sneak and dive.

If (like me) you use #ASMR videos as relaxation aids, you may have noticed that the audio quality of some videos has become inconsistent or even jarring lately.
YouTube has introduced a normalization setting that forces all volume into a single more listenable range, like most broadcast radio uses. It's great for many videos, but terrible for ASMR (and probably classical music as well).
To disable it, tap the gear icon, go to additional settings, and turn off "stable volume".

I think this is mitigated by account size and reach; certain accounts seem to be swamped with low quality replies, while others are not.

Finally, while I'm sure there's some technical reason why it wouldn't work, I personally don't see why you couldn't build an open-source, fedi-compatible midi-blogging service with a format like cohost.
Very little of the functionality there is functionality we don't (at least theoretically) have over here, somewhere. That's not to say it wouldn't be a major effort to build it, just that "tumblr, but fedi and with custom CSS" is entirely manageable.
I hope someone does it!

One of the things that makes no-ads, no-profit-motive social media possible is *acknowledging* that creating a social space is demanding and expensive - that some communities might dissolve - and planning ahead of time for that.
I've been on a number of message boards and moderated newsgroups. Nothing lasts forever. The important thing isn't a forever service; it's a combination of preserving what's there (which Cohost is doing) and providing people a way to exit gracefully.

We make fun of Website Boy, but the idea, "people will pay* us to create some cool software; we'll run servers with economies of scale but other people can run their own servers and provide their own moderation if they want; if someone burns out or runs out of cash people can just migrate to another server" is brilliant.
Because the fact is, running a social media site is exhausting and expensive. Not everyone can do it, certainly not forever.

I was a Cohost Plus member for a while. The format is neat, even if it wasn't for me.
The thing is, I kind of expected this. The maintainers had been talking about being broke and burned out for a long, long time.
Not gonna pass judgment. It was a good idea. It's still a good idea, even if the format isn't my fave. They bit off more than they could chew and/or overestimated people's willingness to pay for it.
That said, I think something like cohost could exist on fedi.

The options are:
1. Accept that kids are just gonna get randomly shot in school.
2. Construct and operate our schools like prisons.
3. Stop giving everyone guns.
If we were any other country, the answer would be both immediate and obvious.

The fact that the police and FBI knew about the kid, his mother called the school to warn them the day of, there were at least two armed cops (sorry, "resource officers") stationed at the school, and somehow a 14-year-old still managed to walk in with an assault rifle, kill four people, and injure a bunch more suggests that the "we need more cops", "it's about mental health not guns", and "let's arm school officials" people may all, in fact, be incorrect.
