I used to work with a guy whose father was a dairy farmer. This was years before satellite imagery and all of that, and the old man could predict the weather based on wind direction, what clouds looked like and the temperature and relative humidity. His herd, and therefore his life, depended on his ability to predict the future. He was good at it.

@annakatarina I saw this on a woodworking page and I was reminded of your tartan posts.

I had an old dog and I taught her all kinds of new tricks.
Later on I taught my 13 year old dog sign language - she had gone deaf and we still needed to communicate.
Now I am teaching my two 10 year old cats sign language. Cats can be trained, too!

Florence is a beautiful city - I highly recommend it. It is worth taking a tour of the Duomo and climbing the stairs up to the cupola, from which you can get a great view of the campanile.

I have known this woman for over 30 years and neither of her daughters talk to her. That strikes me as odd, so I asked her about that today. She said that her ex-husband turned them against her.
Well, I have been around for a while and I suspect that is part of the story. But there was no reason for me to pry or pester her. She is in a tight spot, for sure.
I have one son who will do what he can for me, but he lives far away. Which reminds me, I need to draft a new will and set up a trust for him and his family.

I rarely leave my house but this morning I took a road trip over to a neighboring county to visit a woman who has been living in a care facility for a couple of years. She's in rough shape, but healthy, if that makes sense. She could linger for years. That, to me, is a bleak prospect, but she is hanging in there.
Anyway, as I told another friend, maybe someone will come visit me when I am in the home. End of life issues are a serious concern for those of us of a certain age.

That reminds me of my beloved old Beni - he's gone now but we had 16 years together and I was the only human in the world he was close to.

@annakatarina Twelve years ago I acquired one single Southern Sugar Maple log and I turned a number of pieces out of it. This one was, in my humble opinion, the best of the lot. Remarkable figure, and the whole log was like that.
Now, about that syrup...

I am, thanks for asking. Did a bit of a reset today, seemed like the right thing to do. New year, new pres, new ways of doing business. Also, it is 16 degrees here - not a fan of the cold...
