In 2026, Tando makes it possible to live on Bitcoin in Kenya, and pioneering the spend not sell movement. They are now combining M-Pesa and Bitcoin's Lightning Addresses to unlock that for 40 million Kenyans.
"As Tando has shown, the combination of mobile money and freedom money is growing evidence that where there is a need, Africans will build, and where there is technology, they will pioneer and adopt.
African bitcoin builders continue to demonstrate that you do not need mass adoption or permission to live in the future."

In my latest piece for Forbes Crypto, I go through Nigeria’s new tax laws and its implications for Bitcoin and Stablecoin holders and VASPs in 2026 📌
The new laws introduce several changes, including taxes of up to 30% on profits for Bitcoin and stablecoin holders, a 30% corporate tax for VASPs on digital assets operation (e.g. from tx fees), and introduces the potential for digital assets transactions tracking by the government (i.e. direct txs and flows to individuals’ bio and other personal info) 🛑 👁️

With Africa's rise in share of global Bitcoin mining hashrate now just under 4%, the question is how this hash power is being used and by whom 📌
In my latest for Forbes Crypto, I look into Africa's "Hashrate Exfiltration Problem" and future outlook.
"Put simply, “hashrate exfiltration” is the use of a region's hashrate by a foreign entity or power in furtherance of its interests, often at the region's expense. [...] The legacy of resource extraction in Africa may see another unfortunate renaissance in Bitcoin mining if care is not taken."
"Africa’s resilience against all these odds will set the global template for building resilient money and energy infrastructure, ensuring a future of hope and abundance for all."

Btrust will now be publicly publishing annual reports on all our activities and grants to the public.
Huge thank you to the Btrust team for an incredible 2024! ❤️
Here is our 2024 year-in-review 📌
https://blog.btrust.tech/btrust-2024-in-review/
TL;DR From training the first female African Bitcoin Core contributor to hosting our first Developer Day, 2024 was a landmark year in decentralizing Bitcoin open-source development in the Global South.
Here’s some of what we achieved:
• Graduated 17 developers from our Btrust Builders Cohort 3, focusing solely on open-source Bitcoin development
• Supported 11 developers through grants; 5 now working on long-term projects like Bitcoin Core, BTCPay Server and Lightning Dev Kit (LDK)
• Expanded BitDevs meetups to 5 African cities: Kaduna, Abuja, Lagos, Nairobi & Accra
• Held the Annual Btrust Gathering to plan for 2025
• Hosted the first Developer Day in Nairobi: 250+ attendees
The grind continues in 2025 🔥
