It satisfies so many tastes. Like fantasy? Discworld Like fantasy satire? Discworld Like political satire? Discworld Like societal satire? Discworld Like religious satire? Discworld Like puns? Discworld Like anthropomorphic personifications that like cats? Discworld Like extra long book series (41 novels!)? You guessed it, Discworld If that's not value for money, well frankly I don't know what is. #TerryPratchett npub1rf63wtzlp442fs2l07kakhrl967t2wv5ehksnx5harclr9rm3sfs2neezk Cameron @npub1g53…v0hh ohhh i vaguely remember getting a demo of Hoi and being terrible at it 😅 npub1rf63wtzlp442fs2l07kakhrl967t2wv5ehksnx5harclr9rm3sfs2neezk Cameron Time for a #miniaturepainting science tip. I'm guessing most reasons that drew the current user base to the Fediverse are only relevant to a particular Internet subculture, as existed in smaller numbers back in the late 90s and early 2000s. I think the Fediverse, as it works currently, is more likely to attract the type of people who would have wound up on IRC and Usenet, not necessarily those who were perfectly happy with things like web chat and email as they did the job. npub1rf63wtzlp442fs2l07kakhrl967t2wv5ehksnx5harclr9rm3sfs2neezk Cameron @npub1p5q…q5r0 @npub1qg4…augv hey, if an omnipotent sky entity wants to show up and fix capitalism I'd vote for them. npub1rf63wtzlp442fs2l07kakhrl967t2wv5ehksnx5harclr9rm3sfs2neezk Cameron @npub12ty…vnqc Does this mean we can expect to see a paws in development? npub1rf63wtzlp442fs2l07kakhrl967t2wv5ehksnx5harclr9rm3sfs2neezk Cameron This Caturday I present some feline friends from many years ago, before the Internet became as well established as a cat repository (And before digital cameras were any good). #Caturday #CatsOfMastodon https://s3.eu-central-2.wasabisys.com/mastodonworld/media_attachments/files/111/313/121/473/846/993/original/6d7d3d92f85fe643.jpg https://s3.eu-central-2.wasabisys.com/mastodonworld/media_attachments/files/111/313/131/730/721/519/original/15e3409e7ba81505.jpg https://s3.eu-central-2.wasabisys.com/mastodonworld/media_attachments/files/111/313/146/841/394/841/original/a27db8addeb5a88a.jpg https://s3.eu-central-2.wasabisys.com/mastodonworld/media_attachments/files/111/313/154/515/881/184/original/2937eed28b154308.jpg npub1rf63wtzlp442fs2l07kakhrl967t2wv5ehksnx5harclr9rm3sfs2neezk Cameron @npub1cmg…rzd2 the Fediverse is exactly what the Internet needs. Facebook came along, which gutted independently run communities for the sake of convenience and centralization. All these years later, Facebook groups and pages are still woefully basic compared to what people had built for themselves 20-30 years ago, and what functionality they do offer may disappear without notice if the bean counters demand it. Communities need to be run by communities again, not business people. npub1rf63wtzlp442fs2l07kakhrl967t2wv5ehksnx5harclr9rm3sfs2neezk Cameron @npub1cmg…rzd2 at first I did think that inspiration could be taken from the IRC network architecture, but after spending a bit of time here looking at some of the "discussions" between instance admins I've come to the conclusion that it would only work for individual server scalability rather than at a larger scale on the fediverse, so you end up circling back around to centralization. That said, I suspect the fediverse may effectively take on that appearance, but with more pronounced fracture lines. npub1rf63wtzlp442fs2l07kakhrl967t2wv5ehksnx5harclr9rm3sfs2neezk Cameron @npub12ty…vnqc while I do like Mastodon and what it has done for social media, sharedInbox is defined by the ActivityPub spec, and Webfinger was created by the IETF npub1rf63wtzlp442fs2l07kakhrl967t2wv5ehksnx5harclr9rm3sfs2neezk Cameron "Human, I glimpsed the bottom of my bowl, I feel the darkness closing in." #Caturday #CatsOfMastodon #OverActing https://s3.eu-central-2.wasabisys.com/mastodonworld/media_attachments/files/111/075/167/067/274/250/original/a43950354a2d81fe.jpg npub1rf63wtzlp442fs2l07kakhrl967t2wv5ehksnx5harclr9rm3sfs2neezk Cameron @npub12ty…vnqc out of interest, what's the most resource intensive job type that is likely to backlog other jobs? It touches on many problems in society, but it doesn't hit you over the head with them and say "do better!". #TerryPratchett masterfully weaved them into an enjoyable story, with relatable characters, and by the end of a book all but the most resistant to change will be thinking, at least a little more, like a better person. Society needs more of his kind of storytelling. He was gone too soon. npub1rf63wtzlp442fs2l07kakhrl967t2wv5ehksnx5harclr9rm3sfs2neezk Cameron @npub1cmg…rzd2 Yeah, that's pretty much what I meant. If you want a flexible device that can do more, then you need to accept things like inconsistencies and UIs that aren't as "designed." I don't think I'd be happy with an iPhone as I like to play about with the tech too much. npub1rf63wtzlp442fs2l07kakhrl967t2wv5ehksnx5harclr9rm3sfs2neezk Cameron @npub1cmg…rzd2 I've always felt that Google products are over-engineered compared to others, which leaks into the UI. That said, the Samsung UI is quite polished these days, and about as clean as you can get while maintaining the flexibility afforded by the OS My general view is that iPhones are for people who don't want to think about the internals of the phone, and accept the associated limitations; Android is for people who don't mind thinking about the tech/OS a bit so they can get the flexibility. npub1rf63wtzlp442fs2l07kakhrl967t2wv5ehksnx5harclr9rm3sfs2neezk Cameron @npub1cmg…rzd2 e.g. if illegal material somehow makes its way onto the server, either by it being directly added, or being cached from another instance, and the legal responsibilities that can result of becoming aware of it. Are also civil matters such as libel, although I imagine that wouldn't be very likely in the case of a small server. npub1rf63wtzlp442fs2l07kakhrl967t2wv5ehksnx5harclr9rm3sfs2neezk Cameron @npub1cmg…rzd2 I used to run a custom chat server back in the day, when people had heard the word "Telnet" 😅. I could probably afford to run a small Mastodon instance, but the potential legal liability that comes with things like that these days just makes it too much for me. npub1rf63wtzlp442fs2l07kakhrl967t2wv5ehksnx5harclr9rm3sfs2neezk Cameron @npub1qg4…augv The sad part is that to some people the attention they get from MegaCorp, and saying they are "in discussion" with MegaCorp, is enough for them. Hell, I think I'd prefer it if money was involved, at least that wouldn't be quite so embarrassing. npub1rf63wtzlp442fs2l07kakhrl967t2wv5ehksnx5harclr9rm3sfs2neezk Cameron @npub1094…2wum My cat's introduction post got more attention than mine, maybe I should pin that one instead 😅
