None of us said anything when the cops kicked the guy out, and the church staff came over and apologized for the disruption.
Sitting through that homily it felt like we’d all failed a test.
Like we all got an F in Christmas 101.
Afterwards I chatted with the woman who had given the guy the program. The guy, we agreed, had just wanted to be somewhere warm and welcoming with his dog. And on the one night when it should be the easiest to find that he (and his awesome dog) got kicked to the curb.

The dude seemed to be out of it, but was taking cues from folks on when to stand and when to sit and when to sing and was definitely getting into the music.
Everything was fine until 20 minutes in when 4 cops showed up and told him he wasn’t welcome and he took his dog and followed them out. It was a pretty packed service so soon after he left some folks came and took his place next to me.
The homily was pretty standard stuff about welcoming everyone & giving everyone a seat at the table.

Anyway, this year there was a guy at the end of our pew having a difficult time. I ended up sitting next to him, as he was definitely in a bad state. He was shouting a bunch and getting into it with the church staff.
The service started and the woman in front of me turned around and offered him a program. The guy seemed stoked by that small act of kindness and calmed down, though was still a bit tweaked out. He had cool little dog with him, and the dog ended up falling asleep on my foot.
