Peer to Peer vs #Nostr.
I love the idea of a fully peer-to-peer (p2p) networks, and have played with a couple. The problem with p2p networks is that they suffer from connectivity issues, particularly with mobile.
If I text you, and you are offline, I can't send the message. Then later you go online, but now my phone is off-line, it doesn't get sent either.
#Nostr is great because you can run your own nostr relay if censorship gets extreme. If I am running my own relay, and you are running your own relay, then we are peer to peer. #nostr can morph into p2p.
Even better, #nostr does this dynamically only for those who need it and are willing to host their own relay. For everyone else, they can utilize the performance enhancements you get from using relays.
#nostr can adapt and route around censorship obstacles.
Additionally, I believe the really important #nostr innovation to fight censorship is onboard users to having their own public-private key pair. This is a super-power. Once you and I have public and private keys, we don't have to utilize relays. We can use UPS, ham radio, carrier pigeon, or lasers bounced off the moon.
Practically speaking, I don't think that #nostr can be stopped.

If you are listening to an "authority" who is using overly complex terminology or jargon to promote their ideas, ask them: "What problem are you trying to solve?"
In science, indeed in all knowledge creation we start with a problem.
Once you understand their problem, you can ask how their solution is better than the alternatives.
This will weed out hucksters, and those who don't understand knowledge creation.
Our best explanation of knowledge creation follows these steps:
1. Identify a problem, i.e. conflicting explanations.
2. Conjecture better explanations.
3. Critique the explanations.
4. Go with the explanation that best survives the critiques.
5. Repeat
ALL of our knowledge consists of explanations that have beat out their competitors. They are never proved. Not even in math. They are simply the survivors.
Nothing is ever proved. There is no book, god, machine, or 12 step program we can consult that will give us a guaranteed true, error free answer.
But there are correct answers! You can get the correct answer, you just can't know you have it!
Understand this dichotomy and you are on your way to understanding science.

I think that @npub1v5u…n0v5 by @npub1unm…d0j2 is the first app to be better than any other app out there, BECAUSE it is a nostr app.
I don't care about rando-commentors under YouTube videos, AirBNB stays or Amazon products.
But I do care about what the people I follow think. That is why I follow them.
Tying what was once walled gardens of comments, to one main social graph I think is one of those innovations where the lowering of friction passes a tipping point.
I want to talk to @npub1a2c…w83a about a @npub1n5r…0ngn podcast, or @npub1sg6…f63m about The Rest Is History, or @npub1l2v…ajft about Linux Unplugged.
I also want to find new people to follow, and the comments under a podcast that really inspired me is a great place to fine new follow.

Why? Because AI's are software, and software can't hold private keys.
Think about it. Imagine you are a software program, and you want to hold bitcoin. What are you going to do with your private key, such that the person who is running the computer you are on can't get it?
You could encrypt your private key, but then what are you going to do with the key to that encryption? Encrypting the key leads you down an infinite regress that gets you nowhere, because ultimately you have to have at least one final key that isn't encrypted.
There is a deep principle involved here, and that is: to utilize encryption YOU MUST BE ABLE TO PHYSICALLY SECURE YOUR PRIVATE KEY.
You have to place your key somewhere where no other entity can physically access it, either because it is hidden, or because it is physically impossible to access.
To have and hold #bitcoin or a #nostr account, you have to be a computer or even better a robot/human. You can't simply be software.
So in the article, the AI's don't hold the crypto. Whomever holds the computer that the AI's are running on, holds the crypto.
Cryptographic keys are philosophically very deep. There is a lot there to explore, in terms of identity, and what it means to be human.

The most exciting thing to me about #nostr is that I can write all the apps I use...
... and therefore I can completely design my aesthetic experience of the internet.
No more ads.
No more heinous colors.
No comic sans.
No annoying features.
No missing features.
This is something that you couldn't realistically even buy a few years ago - and now it's possible.
The internet is looking a whole lot better for me.

Thinking about this post by @npub180c…h6w6 about the cost of #NOSTR relays.
Relays are web sockets, a server and a client. Web sockets over #NOSTR should be cheap, because notes are broadcast, and when broadcasting notes, sockets are very efficient.
Let's say @npub1sg6…f63m posts a note to a relay, that relay can BROADCAST that identical note to all it's clients who subscribe to Jack as opposed to sending differing data to all it's clients.
To estimate the potential savings, let's consider a scenario where a web socket server sends 1 KB of data to 100 clients.
Same data to all clients:
Memory: 1 KB (a single copy of the data)
CPU: 1-10% CPU usage (depending on the broadcasting implementation)
Network: 1 KB (a single packet sent to all clients)
Different data to each client:
Memory: 100 KB (100 separate copies of the data)
CPU: 10-100% CPU usage (depending on the packetization and sending implementation)
Network: 100 KB (100 separate packets sent to each client)
In this example, sending the same data to all clients can result in:
99% memory savings (1 KB vs. 100 KB)
90-99% CPU savings (1-10% vs. 10-100% CPU usage)
99% network savings (1 KB vs. 100 KB)
Keep in mind that these estimates are rough, but it makes the point that #NOSTR nodes should be very efficient, and thus relatively cheap in a competitive environment.

Yes, I understand what you are saying, and certainly on a first pass, this is true. It would be hard for me to know in advance what it is like to be X, whether that is a vampire, parent or a paraplegic.
In the Wikipedia article they make a stronger statement though, that there are experiences that someone else has that "cannot be assessed in advanced."
My argument against that is on a fundamental physics / computer science level.
Alan Turing showed us that once a computer becomes what we now call "Turing Complete", it can run ANY program that can be run by ANY Turing complete computer in our universe. The computers may differ in their speed or memory, but they can all run the same programs.
Your brain, my brain, vampires brains (presumably Turing complete), space aliens brains and the AGIs when then come can all run the same programs, and thus can all have the same experiences. Therefore they can describe the experience they had to us, and we can understand/experience it.
Doesn't mean we can do all this know with our tech, but from what we know it can in principle be done.
Sorry to go so deep and theoretical ... I know probably not what you were expecting.

Additionally, relays add some privacy. They shield IP addresses. What is TOR after all then a system of using relays to shield IP addresses.
I love the idea of peer to peer networks, but there are advantages to relays as well beyond just connectivity.

A relay doesn't have to be on a computer that is separate from the clients.
If I start getting censored by relays, I can host my own relay. I can even build the relay into my client and merge them as one.
At the limit, #nostr becomes peer to peer. This can be done as needed so users can balance their concerns for censorship resistance vs performance.

#Bitcoin is uncensorable because you can't turn it off.
However, if you bought your Bitcoin through KYC, the government can see your transactions, and censor you or other parties (like the banks) from interacting with you.
#eCash is ruggable. The mint can turn off.
However, with eCash, the mint can't censor you personally. All they can do is turn the entire mint off, or keep it running. Those are their two choices. There is no database of who has what. All transactions are completely out of band.

So imagine you had a fedi-mint with 1,000 well known custodians, and at least 333 had to go bad in order to rug you. How comfortable are you?

What would a programming language look like with #ecash as a datatype?
Handling payment should be shoved as far down the stack as possible.
Two fundamental things that need to be paid for in a computer:
- Storage
- Compute
There is also Energy.
Energy is more fundamental than storage and compute. Both storage and compute need energy, however storage and compute need more than just energy. There is extra cost for the arrangement of atoms into information media. I think Storage and Compute cover Energy.
