Oh, I don't mean that you'd opt int to have your posts indexed, but to opt-in to who executes your searches.
Posts are public, so anyone should be able to index them, just like the rest of the open web. That's the only way you'll a real global index.

I'd love if individual users could choose their global search provider.
The problem with instances choosing it is that it creates an even more inconsistent experience across different instances and raises the stakes for choosing your instance when you join, when such implications aren't clear to new users.

That's my problem with how Mastodon approaches search. I *want* global search, not just search of what my instance has seen.

So I haven't used Mastodon in a while...
Have their been any improvements in discoverability?
After your initial setup, how do you all find the accounts you want to follow? How do you hear about people joining?
And how's search? Is there a good centralized fediverse search service yet?

I'm not really sure that I've seen specific criticisms received any better. Do you have recent examples of simplistic bashing?
