I do not actually believe that. This post came from a moment of frustration, where I had just seen a bunch of meme and hype quote spam, and found it strange that most people talk about Bitcoin only in a present tense if they aren't parroting "1BTC=1BTC" or posting a meme or vague hype quote about how Bitcoin is the only logical future and how it will kill evil fiat. There's no substance in any of that. Along with this, I clearly don't understand money, according to many of the replies. I'm a newcomer to Bitcoin and Nostr and decentralized protocols and such in general, so my perspective is still trying to form, whereas everyone else apparently has known everything there is to know about all of this for at least 15 years (according to some guy who told me I was an idiot). So I knew I was going to get roasted, but it was a learning opportunity that I felt would be worth it.
I just want the weight of the potential impact to be reflected more in the discourse. I want to be able to talk about the intricate details and have thought experiments and discuss hypothesis with people for how things can *actually* happen, and things that *are* happening. I'm just sick of the memes and the hype quotes.

I think the source of my confusion was consuming too much media where the implication seemed to be that fiat would just stop/die out, we'd then stop valuing BTC in fiat, and then we'd switch over to this new perfect system. Rather, what I needed to realize was that future value will be derived from our current system and there will be a lot of calibration over time as you mentioned. Up until now I have never heard any of the Youtubers, etc. I've been watching directly address this.
Of course my question seems stupid in hindsight, but I guess the fact that it does seem stupid now is a good indicator of exactly why I needed to ask it.

Yeah, I realize I might have come across as a little too aggressive with my tone, but I stand by everything I wrote despite that. I get tired of seeing variations of the same memes and hype quotes recycled on a daily basis and want to take part in some more focused discussion from time to time.
It's pretty interesting to me that the committee thing has been commented on several times. I think that people misunderstood me there... there's clearly a significant amount of sensitivity to even an implication of such a thing in the community. I was just writing the random musings in my head, I never wanted to imply that a committee of any kind is *actually* needed.

I feel like that would've been a completely fair question for someone to wonder about in 1990. Being told "you're just overthinking" is to me more akin to saying "I don't know and I don't like to think about this so you shouldn't either". I'm not saying that's what you were doing, but I find it completely natural to question things and attempt to address ignorance and see what other perspectives are out there. The painful part is when people forget that not everyone has the same level of knowledge or perception as them.

I will absolutely be the first one to admit I still have a ton of ignorance about how markets work. I only finally sat down about 2 months ago and began to properly study and try to understand Bitcoin, and economics for that matter. Like I said in my other reply to you, I think that the majority of discourse in the community has led me astray because it completely lacks practical substance.
Of course I get it that it's fun to hype and meme and shit. But I still couldn't help but feel confused and find a situation I really can't understand when I tried to think about things long term. Everyone just talks about the near term. Price fluctuations, the adoption beginning to ramp up, all the changes starting to happen this year. But the key things I was curious about, I could never find an answer for.
I think the majority of people despise the current system just as I do, but they do to such a degree that they aren't even willing to admit that what comes next must grow from it and be directly linked to in a way we can't avoid. It's not necessarily a bad thing, I think, it's just how things will happen.

I think you are misguided in assuming all other things will be measured against BTC. That's purely impossible and completely discounts all of history. We aren't primitive people who just started bartering and realized we needed a currency. We are transitioning gradually from an extremely complex, corrupt, mismanaged system with hundreds upon hundreds of years of precedent.
So as some of the other people replying have already helped me realize: we will be using our current system as a jumping off point for valuation of BTC as we transition toward a different future.

I think that this applies more to a scenario where a currency is first being created. But we won't be in that scenario, we'll be shifting out of a deeply corrupt and mismanaged centralized system of fiat to something new. The new system will not be completely unaffected by this transition.

It's different because of the core narrative of 1BTC=1BTC and "don't value your BTC in fiat". All I'm trying to do is think about what that can actually seriously mean from a logical perspective.

I see constant talk about how Bitcoin is the way of the future, how it's the answer, the solution to the corrupt and mismanaged fiat system, a revolution, a way to put the power back in the hands of the people, digital capital, how it has so much utility, how it is the perfect money...

see anyone talking about how we'll actually value it in a future where it has achieved the goal that everyone idolizes. Why? Why does it feel like there's no true long-term plan?
Lots of people say "don't value your Bitcoin in fiat", but they just stop there. They don't even bother with trying to extend that thought. I feel like this is a mistake to not take it further.
Imagine a future where Bitcoin has become our new primary store of value and we no longer value Bitcoin in fiat. How will we value it at that point? What will one BTC be representative of?
How will we determine this new system of value? How will we arrive at a consensus for it? Will this somehow naturally and organically grow out of the decentralized nature as the system becomes more and more widespread and adopted and used, similar to the dynamics involved in the emergence of the first currencies? Or will there need to be some form of committee formed to make a decision about how we value BTC? Will governments play a role in this?
All the talk of "0.1 BTC is all you need" and "whole coiners" is all purely based on fiat, and doesn't address anything about the long term future of Bitcoin.
I was wondering if people can tell me if any thought is actually being put towards this. I'd like to read about any progress towards this, or about thought experiments for it, or see videos or listen to podcasts that discuss it. So any kind of recommendation of reading materials or other information would be greatly welcome.
Memes and pithy hype quotes aren't going to do shit for us. If this truly is a revolution, we need plans, and we need to ask the hard questions and deal with the tough discussions and start to think about the goal we all dream of actually being realized. Using noStrudel, it will show you the status of every event generated from your account. I've started noticing that with any event whether it be a reaction, zap, note, etc. just as you mentioned, there's always at least a few relays that don't accept it for one vague reason or another.
The thing that really bothers me about it is that with most of them you can't go and see what rule you broke or what the specific cause was if they don't include it in the 5-6 word error.

When you buy BTC on an exchange and then want to send it to another address but they block your transaction, call you on the phone, make you confirm your name, birth date, address, and verbal confirmation of the address you are sending it to and that you understand what you're doing prior to allowing the transaction...
Wouldn't they be logging this information and using it for some form of reporting to some other organization? Because I know they sure as fuck don't actually care about the safety of your assets. Is it for liability? "You can't complain about us if you lose it because you gave confirmation" type of thing?

Sure the end details of who will actually have it might be an opinion but the logistics involved with any one entity acquiring 4M BTC is not. 19% of all existing Bitcoin, and that's assuming we use 21M of available BTC rather than the much more restrictive supply estimates based on the amount that has been permanently lost (some estimates are anywhere between 4-7M permanently lost). What can or should be done about these failures to post to relays? I assume I wrote something that broke a rule, but I have no way to find out.
I tried to find some kind of list of policies or rules or something for each relay but wasn't able to find anything useful. In noStrudel, it looks like it's just the minimum default reaction. Even if you delete all the quick reacts, you still have the + (thumbs up) and - (thumbs down) reactions.
What's interesting is that I used the thumbs down earlier, and when examining other clients, it doesn't register as a downvote and doesn't even show up in the list of reactions. I'm not quite sure if that's just due to the client itself or if something else weird is going on.

After getting used to it, I typically use the noStrudel client as my go-to... one thing I've noticed about it that's different from the other more "Twitter-esque" clients like Primal, Snort, etc. is that there's a like AND a dislike button, instead of just heart/like.
Does anyone know if this dislike/downvote button actually gets reflected on other clients in some way if you use it?
It made me realize that one highly underrated thing Nostr provides that has been forcibly taken from us on every other social media platform is the ability to express disagreement or dissent in a way that can't be manipulated or hidden. You can comment, but they can block/filter/delete that too. Maybe the closest thing that still exists is Reddit, but I know there's vote manipulation algorithms they run, so I'm not sure of the degree of honesty.
Interested to hear some other perspectives on this. I feel like downvote functionality is just as important as upvote for true, honest, healthy communication, but I'm not sure if I'm an outlier in that view.

I set aside a few hours over the weekend and read these articles in full. Most of the one from Jeff Booth was familiar to me, because I actually discovered Nostr from watching an interview with him where he was speaking about many similar topics. The Spiral Dynamics one was interesting and made sense as a mental framework for viewing different kinds of awareness.
You're very lucky to have been able to achieve a state of mind where you're completely unphased by the state of things.
I identify with many concepts from the Yellow category, but not to a degree to be able to just be laid back about everything.

There's so many important topics in this discussion. I trust Whitney Webb and her investigative journalism. This kind of information about the people who control our data, who control politics, who have ties with every social media platform, the banking system, and all aspects of the media... it really makes me despair to learn these things, because as a normal person with no influence, I don't know what I can do to make any difference in my future. They also talk about how Bitcoin is not free of this influence, which makes perfect sense. The people in power will not relinquish that power without fighting to hold it to the utmost of their ability. I'm still learning things, but my instinct is that CBDCs will be destined to fail no matter because people will eventually manipulate them to exploit others just as with the current system.

I recently joined just the other day and I think you make good points, except for the deletion part. I think the reason why people feel like deletion is necessary is from decades of using the other social media. Deletion on social media is almost like an indirect form of censorship.
Nostr right now is a verifiable public record. Being able to delete something from a public record alters that history and can remove accountability for what was written. It also allows people to selectively curate their online presence, which is a huge and super fucking annoying issue with every other platform. Doing that can be something that contributes to controlling a specific narrative.
By sticking with this system where if you posted it, it can be attributed to you via your key pair, then we maintain full accountability for all things written at all times and nobody can escape it, no matter how uncomfortable it might make them.
A better solution could possibly be allowing edits, and then the edits are chained together to where the edit history is fully maintained and viewable at all times. This is something I kinda want just because I hate making dumb typos 😄

We're extremely divided and we have worsening inflation that's making things so expensive, along with other problems, therefore the economy is weakening. The rest of the world is ridding themselves of US debt, further weakening the dollar.

I agree with you. It's a safe assumption that they will not find any method or have the capability to manipulate Bitcoin. Therefore, they can only ever manipulate L2 technologies. This is also why I don't plan on owning any alt coins ever for any serious reason. There's always a human in the loop.
I'm still new to all this and actively learning... but so far Lightning does make sense to me to make transactions faster and more efficient. However, if it becomes compromised to that same level you describe, with the state wanting to know everything you do financially, would there be any reason to keep using it? Does it provide something to Bitcoin that's crucial enough that people wouldn't seek a more secure alternative with more privacy?

I just signed up with them last night to set up a wallet via Alby Hub. All I provided was my e-mail address, and then I linked my Nostr account. There was no other KYC aspects (unless I am ignorant of what the term really means, in which case just let me know). The membership does of course have a monthly fee and I think that's where they are going to be getting their income from. As far as setting up the Lightning node/channel (I'm still learning this part), I had to pay to do that initial setup but it didn't seem excessive to me, and now it's working great and I can send and receive and have a nice interface to manage it all from.
Just wanted to try to give my perspective as someone brand new to Nostr and Lightning. So far Alby's process has made everything the most straightforward for me out of other options I've seen.
