The surface area increase and tiny libraries are the things I'm arguing against, so it sounds like we agree on that part. My preference is for a rich standard library, comprehensive add-on libraries, and programs that carefully consider the impacts of adding new dependencies. I think the Python ecosystem excels in these areas, and wish Rust ecosystem would improve on them.

Yes for go, but no for the other two. When I look at packaging a C++ program, I usually see low single digit deps, and most/all of them are already packaged. Python isn't bad either, typically in the 5-15 range, but still with most/all of them already packaged. The last time I looked at packaging a rust program without bundling, I gave up after the transitive deps went over 100, and I wasn't even finished mapping them all.

It fundamentally is though. People work on what they want to. If no one is working on the thing you want changed, it ultimately is up to you. If you don't have the skills, you can learn or wait for someone else to get around to it. It comes down to whether you view open source as a collaborative team effort, or a free product that unpaying users can make demands about.
Access to bug reports is a moot point, because the same conversations would just happen elsewhere.

It's not reasonable to ask an open source maintainer to research every person that complains to them to make a prediction if they're a developer or not. And even if the maintainer knows the person complaining doesn't identify as a developer, it's still not rude. Open source is about scratching your own itch, even if it requires some learning to do so. Taking a literal invitation to get involved as an exclusionary statement makes no sense.

Hot take, apparently: "patches welcome" or "pull requests welcome" is just fine as a response to complaints. It's a gentle reminder of how open source works. If you are offended by it, that says more about you than the person saying it.

That's a great point. So maybe we can do a new 90.x version on the c9 branch, keeping the wallpaper but refreshing the logos. Sounds like a plan to me.

What do you think Alain? Is there any reason we can't use the same files for 9? If they work then perhaps we should ditch the old version scheme and just start incrementing whole numbers starting at 101 and use the same version of the logos on all branches.

You're basically right, but there is some nuance. Both release a new major version every 3 yrs, but CentOS happens about 6 months earlier. After the major version, ongoing updates are delivered to CentOS after they pass QA, but are often deferred in RHEL up to 6 months until the next minor version. These deferments can be painful for a developer, because they include highly desirable things like new alternate versions of programming languages and runtimes.

The two big differences are 10 vs 5.5 yr lifecycle and minor versions. If 5.5 yrs is sufficient, and you don't have software that requires a specific RHEL minor version, then I think you'll be well served by using CentOS. Extra things to consider:
- If you are wanting to start with EL10, then picking CentOS means that you'll get it this year instead of next year.
- EPEL 10 will prioritize CentOS, so I think package availability will be slightly better for CentOS users.

Did you sign up with a personal email address or a company one? I don't have any insight into this process, but I can imagine a scenario where some accounts get flagged as possibly violating the terms of service when using a known corporate email domain. The Developer Subscription for Individuals (D4I) is for individual use, but there is a separate program called the Developer Subscription for Teams (D4T) that might be a better fit.

Just to be clear, I've been on the committee since 2020. Historically the committee seats have been appointed, but we decided to implement proper elections going forward. About half the committee including myself volunteered to step down and effectively run for re-election.

It's weird to me how so many people (here and in other comment sections) want to outright dismiss the concerns raised in the article because of flaws in the writing. My guess is it was written by a non-native English speaker, which if true would make critiques of the writing kinda tacky IMO. But writing mistakes aside, the concerns raised are the important part, and no one has answers for those.
