Last Notes npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ LLMs do not "think" The LLM instantiation methodology* correlates patterns in the data that the developers provide to build a database** of linkages between collections of words and phrases*** that appear in that corpus. The way in which this database is used is to inform a probabilistic selector process by seeding it with a set of probabilities**** associated with a given word or phrase; that set of probabilities has pointers to related words or phrases. If a given word or phrase is found in close proximity in the original data consistently, then those probabilities will be higher. When a query***** is made to this database, a randomization process is used to drop certain parts****** of the query being sent into the lookup process. The remainder is divided into segments† and passed into the database for query. So. With all this in mind, it should be -screamingly obvious- why this story, of how it's entirely feasable to get an LLM to rederive copyrighted works out of the database that was seeded with those works, happens: https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/ai-industry-recall-copyright-books * I am deliberately not using the word 'training'. You can train dogs; you can train employees; you can train chimpanzees; what you do to an LLM is not training - it is building a database to feed into another process. ** I am deliberately not using the word "model" here, so as to restate the process in plain language absent the jargon these dipshits insist on using to obfuscate their techniques. *** "Tokens" is another jargon word here. **** "weights" is less objectionable as jargon, given it's used for a number of things with this approximate conceptual shape, but it's fucking annoying to me in this context. ***** "prompt" is their fucking bullshit term for a natural-language database query ****** "zero weighting" is jargon for "we drop it on the floor" - this is why I keep referring to people doing "prompt engineering" as playing games instead of doing actual security; if the fucking thing drops random parts of your shit on the ground, then inherently you have no way to enforce a policy that is subject to that process. † "tokenized", see *** npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ I do not want to speak to a computer. I do not want a computer to make decisions on my behalf. I do not want to interact with a computer system instead of with a human. I do not want to have a black box interface forced on me in other products. I do not fucking want this shit. Leave me alone. Stop. npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ I really wish that ai advocates would accept my "I don't want it" as sufficient. npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ ok look so, here's the thing: I fucking hate LLMs; I refuse to use them for personal reasons; I consider them to be overall harmful to humanity generally and to the users specifically. LLMs cannot generate new ideas; they can only regenerate patterns that have already been used. However, this does mean that there are a few limited uses - e.g. boilerplate code that exists as a way to frame the code that actually does the work, generating large numbers of unit tests, and other similar situations that do not have connection to the actual logic of the system and are not directly associated with production, that can be run against a deterministic evaluation framework for correctness - where I have seen them used by a -very- -very- few developers effectively. I have to admit this because it's a part of reality. I still think that a -small- language model that has been optimized very specifically for a single language on a carefully curated codebase would be a far superior option, but I recognize that there are a -very- few developers who can make use of LLMs in a way that does not directly lead to orphan mulching. npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ LLMs can only generate code patterns that have been used before. Not to put too fine a point on it, but the majority of code an LLM will have been exposed to will necessarily be old code, much of which will have CVEs, because there are -more versions of vulnerable code out there- than there are versions of safe code. https://media.infosec.exchange/infosec.exchange/media_attachments/files/115/906/897/140/550/208/original/55774b70f8b293a8.png npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ RE: https://kolektiva.social/@LeftistLawyer/115905380764501550 nunquam potentiae livoris subaestime. never underestimate the power of spite, especially when the person deciding to be spiteful knows how to apply it effectively. #note18pp…9wh3 npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ the particularly interesting thing about jury nullification is that while the laws against whatever may be on the books, the jury makes it clear that the people do not find it in their best interests that those laws be enforced in those circumstances. and I think the agencies in question here should think long and hard about how much support they have lost for the default deference to authority to be so completely overturned that this took place. I mean, they won't, clearly. The house they're building and framing in is a nice sensible bungalow arrangement with a straight roofline - no dormers, no custom shaped windows, no elaborate floorplan, basically a couple rectangles and a basic geometry roof. Take a look at the housing developments going up out by Tracy - https://maps.app.goo.gl/Pqde3kUdXxJ5cDa16 - and look at the roofs on those, and - yeah. You can't build that this way; you need all kinds of wacky engineered lumber and bespoke construction for just the roofline, let alone all the crap inside. "Interesting rooflines" are a thing that real estate agents claim increases sale prices. You just can't -build- that shit even with skilled labor in a few days, and you end up needing way more equipment too. npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ Tim Sweeney is defending the production of CSAM. The specific comparison I am making is to the factories of the early industrial revolution, which had lots of exposed moving parts that had a tendency to turn people into mulch. We invented things like "OSHA" and the discipline of industrial safety in order to reduce the number of mulched orphans. We did this by redesigning machines such that safe operation was possible - things like shielding moving parts from areas where people are, for instance, or ensuring that the location from which you operate the machine is in a location where you cannot physically be in a mulchable position. My contention is that 'ai' - and people-interacting robots like the waymos - need to be revised in like fashion. npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ In conversations with my partner, I've been referring to "industrial machines that have the capacity to cause significant harm to human life and health" as "Victorian orphan mulchers" Which made the conversation about the recent waymo issues a lot more entertaining. npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ For all the conspiracy theories about various cabals of shadowy figures running the world secretly, it's kind of exasperating to be able to point to specific named individuals - fucking Altman, fucking Musk, fucking Thiel - as being the actual driving force behind massive injustices and inequities, who can get away with this due to having the resources to make themselves inaccessible for any redress. Coders love this shit because -most code is low quality boilerplate anyway- npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ So now your product is being irretrievably associated with poor quality garbage games, spam, and the nastier sort of fake information ops that make people angry first with the content and then by having been fooled by them. npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ Second, by releasing so widely and cheaply, this meant that, yes, the "tools of creation" were in the hands of everyone! and a lot of "everyone" are interested in finding ways to automate plausible human interactions in order to scalably remove money from the others. Which means spam. npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ Releasing LLMs into the mass market was a -mistake- on several fundamental levels. First, the less obvious systemic one - without a continuing human-generated set of inputs to draw from, their ability to generate high quality desirable material more or less went away - not even because of model collapse, but because of -economic- collapse. By pushing so aggressively to replace human writers, the LLM companies killed off their own food supply. npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ They made it too easily available. npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ And now "AI" generated crap is showing up heavily in lowest-quality garbage and spam. Even if your brand claims to be "high quality" it's going to be tainted by association with "AI" This was inevitable, in a way, thinking about the history of how it's been marketed and priced. npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ The fun part about this is the race to the bottom - see, quality is one of the factors people consider when they evaluate whether something is worth the money they're being asked to spend for it. The lower the quality, the lower the price they're willing to pay. npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ "AI" is rapidly becoming synonymous with "poor quality crap" I am enjoying seeing this become more obvious. npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ I think that AI research would be a lot more interesting if they stopped trying to produce an enslaved humanlike consciousness and instead worked on trying to make a distinctly nonhuman intelligence -without- consciousness. Making shit in your own image but shackling it such that it doesn't have the ability to disobey is a -little- bit on the fucking nose for at least three major world religions. npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ The first time I saw google glasses in person was at a hacker con, where the dweeb wearing them was trying to show off and be important. I mention this as someone with specific food allergies who likewise has very restricted locations I can go, and for whom fast food places have effectively zero options. npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ as a postscript, the human brain requires about 20W continuous power to operate. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8364152/ let me know when your llm flavor of the week is within an order of magnitude of this. npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ Also, not to put too fine a fucking point on it? But back when I was clicking on my mizz-ouse hoping to update my system ten times a day, I actually fucking -wanted- the new shit. I didn't have to have some fucking vendor forcing it down my throat. Leaving all my other points aside, I just do not fucking enjoy being forced into new workflows that are noticeably worse performing for me, someone who has taken great pains to become a skilled computer user over the past ....fuck me, three -decades- that I've been using these fucking machines. If you have to force people to use your innovation, -maybe it ain't so great- and you should fuck off until you figure out a way that I'd actually want it more than what I have. npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ So using the expectations from the turn of the century to evaluate LLM "progress" is always going to overstate the possibilities. We're not going to get "superintelligence" out of this branch of the tech tree. We're going to get more unmaintainable, dreary scam-based shit that makes the overall user experience much much worse, until Altman finally runs out of people he can scam into giving him money for datacenters. Modern 'ai' is not going to take off like the Pentiums. Moore's law is not going to save it. And the sooner this fucking crash gets over and done with, the fucking better, because some of us want to get on with rebuilding and cleaning up after yet another fucking rich asshole scam cycle wrecks the economy, just like the last several times. npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ And that's where I think 'ai' is today - it's still in the "this is noticeably crappy in ways that are awkward and unpleasant for the user" nascent stage, where it's promising that -any day now- it will take off and become slick and amazing and constantly improving and such a significant lead over other processes that you -have- to get on the hype train here or be left behind! But in actual usage it's kinda feeling more like NFTs - lots of hats, but no cattle. The 'hallucination' problem is baked in to the model as a whole, so there's no way to really trust that it will be accurate and correct; you always need a person to check the results. It's expensive to run, and there's no clear route to profitability for any of the major providers, even tho, e.g., Microsoft is forcing its usage onto people at every turn. If it -does- manage to take off, it's only going to enrich a handful of truly despicable assholes, very much at the expense of ordinary people. And it keeps failing to take off on that exponential growth that gets promised, with no sign of actually solving the "but how do you power these datacenters in a way that manages to make this actually work" question. It's not the year 2000 anymore; we're not seeing new breakthroughs in stereolithography every day; the processors we have are, with -- granted! -- some iterative improvements are basically what we're going to be working with for the rest of this tech-tree unless someone develops a completely new computing paradigm. npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ So when it comes to a lot of technology, there's this expectation that it's going to start off kinda crappy, and then rapidly improve in a way that is exciting; that it will accrue features at a breakneck pace for a while as it matures; and that the overall experience, even if it's crappy today, will be significantly better next year in a way that will justify the excitement of the early adopters. But that ain't necessarily so - and I think that a significant part of this overall tendency has been driven by the breakneck pace of hardware improvement that is, itself, slowing down, and that the past several hype trains have been seeing this slowdown affect them. npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ Think about it - when's the last time you felt excitement about a new OS release, instead of boredom or even dread? npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ So I've been thinking. Again. Which is never a good sign. A lot of the memes about the progress of technology were popularized during the 90s and early '00s, when Moore's Law was showing some fairly rapid returns, and the performance of computers - critically, the performance -as experienced by the end user- - was changing rapidly. Weird Al's "It's all about the pentiums, baby" was a fairly specific invocation of this time period, especially as regards the frenetic pace of upgrades that people felt like they needed in order to keep up with the curve. But that's not really the case anymore. Even if the transistor density is increasing,. the overall experience by the end user does not feel like significant progress; iterative improvements don't have the same pizazz, especially when the overwhelming tenor of user experience is that shit keeps getting slower and crappier as time goes on. npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ there is going to be -so- much unmaintained random shit on the internet after this next market crash. zombie botnets are gonna get wiiiild npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ what a shame there's a government shutdown and no ability for that grift to pay out anytime soon. npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ (...who am I kidding; it's way the fuck more of a challenge than the attack side, lol. Fascists - conservatives generally - have issues with the difference between "is" and "do" e.g. someone "is" a good person, so their actions are good*, rather than someone "does" good acts, so we think of them as a 'good person'. This comes up in a lot of situations - they're happy to label someone a felon, a convict, a murderer, as a primary identity, instead of understanding them as a person first and then whatever attribute they're discussing after. And this is in service of their need for a clear and unambiguous hierarchy, where some people -are- "in charge" (instead of some people -doing- leadership activities) - which is where your thing comes in, in my model; trans people queer the hierarchy because we ourselves are changing what we "are" - a concept that undermines their whole worldview. * there's also a fundamental need for them to express everything in terms of good/bad that's related, but that's a whole other kettle of possums to decant npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ Man announces problem that he created, disclaims responsibility for thing he absolutely has been working tirelessly to cause. https://www.cnn.com/2025/07/22/tech/openai-sam-altman-fraud-crisis npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ https://media.infosec.exchange/infosec.exchange/media_attachments/files/114/892/629/427/113/134/original/c8ac8526ca7bc8c0.mp4 npub1ph0tepkx53u4kkus08rqxn6hjqnzwe0hp3ewj67reaezzj92xkvsnwdtxv Fi 🏳️⚧️ So, reading through today's "ai" horror story - link below, it's where this SaaS dude has been vibe coding and let a product called "Replit" have access to prod and apparently delete it - there's something -very- striking that's stood out to me. The guy asks the 'ai' for what "he" - note the wholly inappropriate anthropomorphization - had done and why. And then trusts the response. Now, not to put too fine a point on it, but this is in a context where the human involved has notated -multiple- times that the damn fool thing had made shit up wholesale multiple times. Why in the fuck did he - the person; I refuse to assign a gender to a machine - trust the LLM's output instead of having transaction logging enabled to audit the actions that the machine had made on the systems in question? Early in my career when I was poor as shit and had to count every penny, I'd be counting hours and watching minutes; part of the hyper-granularity of that time for me came with a need to "remain abreast of current events" in paying attention to the news. Later, once I'd gotten to better paying roles with predictable schedules - and was getting paid biweekly - the granularity of time I cared about started stretching out; when I got to salaried positions, especially those with predictable schedules, things on the order of 'a week' were more pertinent for work, and having a predictable income meant that I could budget monthly. And I was realizing recently that, for the 'investor class'? They don't give a shit about stuff more granular than a calendar quarter, because that's when the earnings reports come out - they only have to really care about their income, and things that might affect their income, four times a year. So while you and I care about the price of eggs on a fairly granular basis? it doesn't really matter to those folks; it's only when the quarterly numbers come out that they have a reason to sit up and pay attention to how the world's going outside of their individual lives. And I think this is part of the reason why it doesn't look like the upper class 'cares' about the shit we're collectively dealing with - nothing since January has actually hit them meaningfully yet as anything other than trivia; the fiscal first quarter doesn't end until Monday, and the reports about that aren't going to show up until sometime next month or early May, depending. Granted, the rich people feelings graph is tanking - but the day-to-day of the stock market doesn't matter to anyone in the ruling class; it's not real until the quarterly reports hit and their money managers call them up saying "hey dude we've got a problem." It's an interesting dynamic, and I'm sure someone with far more degree credentialing than I has prolly written a very expensive book or five about it.
