LLMs do not "think"
The LLM instantiation methodology* correlates patterns in the data that the developers provide to build a database** of linkages between collections of words and phrases*** that appear in that corpus.
The way in which this database is used is to inform a probabilistic selector process by seeding it with a set of probabilities**** associated with a given word or phrase; that set of probabilities has pointers to related words or phrases.
If a given word or phrase is found in close proximity in the original data consistently, then those probabilities will be higher.
When a query***** is made to this database, a randomization process is used to drop certain parts****** of the query being sent into the lookup process. The remainder is divided into segments† and passed into the database for query.

ok look so, here's the thing:
I fucking hate LLMs; I refuse to use them for personal reasons; I consider them to be overall harmful to humanity generally and to the users specifically.
LLMs cannot generate new ideas; they can only regenerate patterns that have already been used.
However, this does mean that there are a few limited uses - e.g. boilerplate code that exists as a way to frame the code that actually does the work, generating large numbers of unit tests, and other similar situations that do not have connection to the actual logic of the system and are not directly associated with production, that can be run against a deterministic evaluation framework for correctness - where I have seen them used by a -very- -very- few developers effectively.
I have to admit this because it's a part of reality.
I still think that a -small- language model that has been optimized very specifically for a single language on a carefully curated codebase would be a far superior option, but I recognize that there are a -very- few developers who can make use of LLMs in a way that does not directly lead to orphan mulching.

LLMs can only generate code patterns that have been used before.
Not to put too fine a point on it, but the majority of code an LLM will have been exposed to will necessarily be old code,
much of which will have CVEs,
because there are -more versions of vulnerable code out there- than there are versions of safe code.

we've been having a lot of discussions about 'ai' shit lately, and one of the things I argue is that most modern 'ai' systems are not built in a way that is safe for human life.
The specific comparison I am making is to the factories of the early industrial revolution, which had lots of exposed moving parts that had a tendency to turn people into mulch.
We invented things like "OSHA" and the discipline of industrial safety in order to reduce the number of mulched orphans.
We did this by redesigning machines such that safe operation was possible - things like shielding moving parts from areas where people are, for instance, or ensuring that the location from which you operate the machine is in a location where you cannot physically be in a mulchable position.
My contention is that 'ai' - and people-interacting robots like the waymos - need to be revised in like fashion.

And that's where I think 'ai' is today - it's still in the "this is noticeably crappy in ways that are awkward and unpleasant for the user" nascent stage, where it's promising that -any day now- it will take off and become slick and amazing and constantly improving and such a significant lead over other processes that you -have- to get on the hype train here or be left behind!
But in actual usage it's kinda feeling more like NFTs - lots of hats, but no cattle.
The 'hallucination' problem is baked in to the model as a whole, so there's no way to really trust that it will be accurate and correct; you always need a person to check the results.
It's expensive to run, and there's no clear route to profitability for any of the major providers, even tho, e.g., Microsoft is forcing its usage onto people at every turn.
If it -does- manage to take off, it's only going to enrich a handful of truly despicable assholes, very much at the expense of ordinary people.
And it keeps failing to take off on that exponential growth that gets promised, with no sign of actually solving the "but how do you power these datacenters in a way that manages to make this actually work" question.
It's not the year 2000 anymore; we're not seeing new breakthroughs in stereolithography every day; the processors we have are, with -- granted! -- some iterative improvements are basically what we're going to be working with for the rest of this tech-tree unless someone develops a completely new computing paradigm.

A lot of the memes about the progress of technology were popularized during the 90s and early '00s, when Moore's Law was showing some fairly rapid returns, and the performance of computers -
critically, the performance -as experienced by the end user-
- was changing rapidly. Weird Al's "It's all about the pentiums, baby" was a fairly specific invocation of this time period, especially as regards the frenetic pace of upgrades that people felt like they needed in order to keep up with the curve.
But that's not really the case anymore. Even if the transistor density is increasing,. the overall experience by the end user does not feel like significant progress; iterative improvements don't have the same pizazz, especially when the overwhelming tenor of user experience is that shit keeps getting slower and crappier as time goes on.

Reading the work of someone whose prior authorial voice I know well, after they've been engaging with LLMs, feels similar to me to reading the work of an author who's had a degenerative brain disease or a TBI.

I think there's a more fundamental issue in play here.
Fascists - conservatives generally - have issues with the difference between "is" and "do"
e.g. someone "is" a good person, so their actions are good*,
rather than someone "does" good acts, so we think of them as a 'good person'.
This comes up in a lot of situations - they're happy to label someone a felon, a convict, a murderer, as a primary identity, instead of understanding them as a person first and then whatever attribute they're discussing after.
And this is in service of their need for a clear and unambiguous hierarchy, where some people -are- "in charge" (instead of some people -doing- leadership activities) - which is where your thing comes in, in my model; trans people queer the hierarchy because we ourselves are changing what we "are" - a concept that undermines their whole worldview.

So, reading through today's "ai" horror story - link below, it's where this SaaS dude has been vibe coding and let a product called "Replit" have access to prod and apparently delete it - there's something -very- striking that's stood out to me.
The guy asks the 'ai' for what "he" - note the wholly inappropriate anthropomorphization - had done and why.
And then trusts the response.
Now, not to put too fine a point on it, but this is in a context where the human involved has notated -multiple- times that the damn fool thing had made shit up wholesale multiple times.
Why in the fuck did he - the person; I refuse to assign a gender to a machine - trust the LLM's output instead of having transaction logging enabled to audit the actions that the machine had made on the systems in question?

There's something fairly specific I've noticed about a correlation between wealth and the granularity of time over which events 'matter' to you.
Early in my career when I was poor as shit and had to count every penny, I'd be counting hours and watching minutes; part of the hyper-granularity of that time for me came with a need to "remain abreast of current events" in paying attention to the news.
Later, once I'd gotten to better paying roles with predictable schedules - and was getting paid biweekly - the granularity of time I cared about started stretching out; when I got to salaried positions, especially those with predictable schedules, things on the order of 'a week' were more pertinent for work, and having a predictable income meant that I could budget monthly.
And I was realizing recently that, for the 'investor class'? They don't give a shit about stuff more granular than a calendar quarter, because that's when the earnings reports come out - they only have to really care about their income, and things that might affect their income, four times a year.
So while you and I care about the price of eggs on a fairly granular basis? it doesn't really matter to those folks; it's only when the quarterly numbers come out that they have a reason to sit up and pay attention to how the world's going outside of their individual lives.
And I think this is part of the reason why it doesn't look like the upper class 'cares' about the shit we're collectively dealing with - nothing since January has actually hit them meaningfully yet as anything other than trivia; the fiscal first quarter doesn't end until Monday, and the reports about that aren't going to show up until sometime next month or early May, depending.
Granted, the rich people feelings graph is tanking - but the day-to-day of the stock market doesn't matter to anyone in the ruling class; it's not real until the quarterly reports hit and their money managers call them up saying "hey dude we've got a problem."
It's an interesting dynamic, and I'm sure someone with far more degree credentialing than I has prolly written a very expensive book or five about it.
