I've recently accepted 32" 4k as an acceptable size/resolution on Mac. Sure innocn a lot better, but also a ton more expensive. This innocn is pretty tempting, high refresh rate, great P3 color support (in SDR at least) and actually factory calibrated.
Probably pretty good for console gaming as well using the HDR mode. Seems like a good all in one style monitor.

Linux idle power consumption isn’t bad. That’s mini + HD + NIC. Guessing N100 would only hit 10-15 idle but that’s a $200 purchase vs $35 for the NIC.

I think I'm fine with most of these "AI” features, not sure I'll use many of them but they are for the most part OK.
Exceptions being re-write and the image generation stuff. I don't want to read everything with the “did X write this or is it computer junk" mindset. Image Generation is just troubling to me from a copying art standpoint.

I tested out the Vision Pro, there were definitely a few "that's neat" moments, but I just didn't care for it overall. Maybe part of it was not having the right bits and pieces for my head shape? I don't know just came away with the impression that if I never tried it again, it wouldn't bother me.

I recently bought a Nintendo Switch OLED (yeah I know new one will come out any year now). Really boggles my mind that Apple doesn't make a competing device, they already have just about every part to make a compelling handheld gaming device. Yeah its not going to be a trillion dollar project, but at least to me seems like super easy money.

Every couple month or so I look through the PHPicker API to see if I'm missing something. My brain just can't comprehend that not only is the default Photos sharing behavior to include location but that there's no API option to opt out of getting the location data. *
* I strip the data before uploading it, Mastodon also strips the data during processing, but I think Apple should strip all that out by default before passing it to any apps.

2024 is going to be the year of OLED monitors. Unfortunately no one is making a 4k 27" OLED which would be a pretty good all in one monitor. Plenty of 32" 4k available but not a huge fan of the Mac scaled option on those.

I have mixed feelings about the death of the 27" iMac. As someone who likes to swap out both frequently, I've never been a fan of tethering the display to the CPU. But it was arguably the best Mac for development for a number of years. User upgradable RAM, great display and a decent config was “affordable" (at least as much as any Mac is).
IMO the Studio is a better replacement, unless Apple jacks up the M3 price. But would like to see some Apple monitors that aren't full of compromises.

I'm looking for a rock solid < 15W pfSense box, that doesn't cost a fortune.
I could go with one of the various N5105 or N100 aliexpress “firewalls” + USB watchdog timer, but not sure how reliable that hardware is for just sitting there without being touched for months. Plus would always worry about the damned things catching on fire.
Other choice is actually a Mac Mini 2014, I know they are reliable, won't catch on fire and sip power. But no hardware watchdog option on these…

Ended up swapping out my Trashcan Mac Pro TrueNAS setup with a 3900X. The Pro was super stable, don't think it crashed once in months of using it but 3900X uses about 1/2 the power and is quite a bit faster. Just wish Unbuffered ECC DDR4 wasn't so expensive, feels weird having a 12 core with 32GB of RAM.

Looks like threads is off again (I almost said down, but it isn't Twitter) so I can't link directly to the post/thread. But I'd say this is a good commitment to being federated.
Just to be clear, this means that you'll be able to interact with folks on the Threads network, just like you can with any other instance. It doesn't mean you'll be able to use your favorite Mastodon client to log in to a Threads account. I very much doubt they're ever going to have an open API.
