Feeling that today.
I started off annoyed by all the anti-lightning sentiment here, which I saw as an agenda to promote ecash alternatives.
At the same time I wanted an easier lightning solution, self-custody but easier than a raspiblitz node.
I asked for advice here about Zeus and Mutiny. Seemed that Zeus was for business and Mutiny for nostr plebs.
Two big problems.
1. The 16000 sat fee still went through after I cancelled the wallet connection.
2. A small balance of around 13000 esats is stuck in a fedimint because I didn't get round to swapping it immediately.
So I admit I got sucked into the ecash hype despite my initial clear thinking. The novelty factor is a powerful drug.

I'm done with all this experimenting.
I planned on a one-off donation to @nprofile…eluy for 16,000 sats, by signing up for plus and then later cancelling the wallet connection. That's how they advise to do it and the functionality is provided in-app.
So far so good. Until today when another 16,000 sats goes out and the wallet connection was mysteriously active again.
If I just forgot to cancel then I'd write it off as a bonus donation to the hard working devs and leave it there. But I'm annoyed because I was intentional about disconnecting the wallet and double-checking that the subscription had stopped, only to find it hadn't.
If they help themselves again next month, then the wallet is no more secure than my fiat account, and I'll need to find a better solution.
That's what self-custody is all about... we use the tools and take the risks. I'm not expecting anyone to bail me out or refund me 16,000 sats - that's a fiat mindset. But ranting about it might help some other poor soul along the way. And meanwhile I learn another lesson.

2024 AI seems all about getting inside my head and exporting or exposing that to silicon valley and friends. So many gimmicks that end up being Trojan horses.
What isn't downright creepy ends up being an attention drain, another tech-baby that needs constant care through tweaking, tuning, reworking. Once again, we're the product, or rather the test subjects... we're training the models for free (or even paying instead of being paid), and we're also being trained/conditioned/dumbed down.
At first we try to bend the machine to our will, but eventually we seek convenience and the removal of friction, so conform and limit ourselves to the constraints of the machine instead. In this way we think we're winning, optimizing the process (by compromising and adapting ourselves), becoming productive (through the deception of new busy-work to replace the old), and joyful (by avoiding disappointment with our sunk costs, and getting something out of the effort). Our folly is validated and reinforced by a hundred open-mouthed infloooencoors and we believe we're at the cutting edge of a pivotal moment in history.
The benefits are still limited, the use cases advertised are the exceptions, the best of the best, difficult to replicate in our own contexts, but we settle for it, and praise the garments of the naked emperor as he passes by. Through the lens of ai we can discover where we ourselves have become robotic in our optimized thinking and practice. Perhaps after the novelty wears off, werealise that the thing we were doing, which ai now does slightly worse, is probably something that shouldn't be done at all.
Worst of all, ai is encroaching on things we do to sharpen our thinking... while claiming it only exists to relieve us from soul-numbing tedium. If we abdicate all these 'tasks' the opportunity cost is our neuroplasticity and growth.
We're being conned on a massive scale... again... and we mostly don't seem to mind. Part of the con is the promise of a better coexisting future, where we do human stuff and bots do bot stuff. And while our ego warms up to this vision and imagines itself as master, conductor, manager... the silent takeover continues.
I thought we were enjoying a period of respite on the road to 2030... my eyes on geopolitical information and economic wars... and the attempt to throttle bitcoin... feeling hopeful that the pandemic was in the rear view mirror. Until I became aware of the water getting a little warmer and wondering if it was too late to jump out.

Just need to give my pension fund some bitcoin exposure... as I'm not allowed to touch that either for my own protection, and all the permissible index funds are lame bond, property, cash, or worse... again for my own protection.
My actual pension is my bitcoin stash but there's 25 years of sunk costs from both myself and my employer tied up in the pension fund and it makes me so angry to think how the government will snaffle it up before I get to convert it into annuities.

Came back from holiday to a quiet house. Wife goes into bedroom and spots giant spider just resting on carpet between her and the bed.
She screams and I come running with a cup to trap and release. Missed the first time and it runs under the bed. Now she won't sleep knowing the monster is lurking there waiting for her to sleep so it can come out and terrorise her.

On the doggie dynamic: well played. Today's concession becomes tomorrow's expectation and next week's routine. We have a poodle cross who always holds out for a better option. As if mind games with the teenagers wasn't enough 🙄
On the wife dynamic: took me a couple of years to understand that when my wife comments like that (don't be so hard on the poor soul etc) it was more about her staying in role as the nurturing home maker who has the privilege of delegating discipline to me... and not a challenge to my authority or direction in that moment. The right response for me was to acknowledge that and then remain consistent, (your mother cares about your feelings and wants to show you grace, that's good and we'll get to that after you acknowledge what was wrong and carry some responsibility for it). Or in the case of the puppy eye poodle, making similar acknowledgement for the sake of our little daughter who would otherwise see me as a monster for not giving in to the doggie's every whim (mind you she dresses him up, carries him around everywhere, and pets him long after he's throwing out those 'please save me' eyes to anyone else in the room.
So it's all good fun 😁

I have a terrible urge to create custom gpts to leverage home education for our children.
I'm fed up of wrestling with content providers who either (a) create substandard material for a desperate market who must be grateful for anything we get and pay a premium for it or (b) pitch to state education and claim to also support home education but leave a huge gap and many confusing steps to adapt the material.
I had sympathy for teachers and education providers being replaced by technology but for the first time I am keen to press ahead. My wife is an excellent coach for each child but preparing lesson plans, content, interactive practice, and metrics, that's a lot of grunt work that takes away from what she can do best - delivery to the child as part of the relationship.
Seems like an epiphany moment, so of course the first place I come to share it is in a note transmitted by relays.

Yes and I think it will become a competition between the religions for staking a majority in the next epoch. Catholicism certainly encourages 'be fruitful and multiply' but Islam seems to be doing better in sheer numbers. Interesting.
The key point for congregations is engaging the next generation with timeless truth rather than subverting that truth and making ourselves indistinguishable from the world. It's like claiming to be a Bitcoiner while steeped in Keynesian doctrine and hiding shitcoin bags just in case. Who's gonna listen to your Bitcoin advocacy if you don't even believe it yourself to the point of making substantial changes and realignments in your life?
