Just a quick note to say I'm still breathing and living the code monkey dream. These last months in $newJob have been pretty intense, but I think I'm learning Java and stuff as much as I can and really enjoying it, and I've been lucky enough to land in a very good team where people collaborate and support us, fresh juniors. Work is really difficult and demanding but working conditions are very good, so that's fine.
I hope everything's good for you (yes, you), here's a 😘 and all my ♥️.

Back to the basics. I've started another web pet project, this time with #Java. And I mean plain vanilla Java, with no backend or frontend frameworks. I get the utility of those when doing corporate stuff, but for a relatively simple web project, with time on my side? It more than suffices, it will likely be way lighter, and I get to see behind some of the framework's abstractions, so it's another opportunity to learn. :)

It's official, wrote my renounce letter today, so back to the desert caravan of job search again. But I feel fine, as I've shown no other but myself that I could land a job as a programmer and survive the experience. Why I'm leaving is long to tell, but let's just say that I'd still be there if I could just keep on doing web programming projects, but that would have been no longer the case. I'll have my chance again, and if not... I'll just keep on coding, no matter what. :)

@npub1rnj…vtmy Runs on mostly anything, no matter if it's old. You can try and use lots of different desktop environments and window managers and tweak them to your liking at code level. You can actually (provided you know how to) inspect and change the code of anything running in your machine. Mix and match any of the pieces inside, like it's a Lego. It's stable, lightweight, free as in freedom and as in free beer (the second part is not mandatory, but quite the norm). Etc. :)

I have to record my screen and then edit the videos as video-tutorials for a web app I've developed at $dayJob. The edit process will just need some cut and paste, add text subtitles, and maybe some background music. I don't know anything about video editing and I don't really want to turn into a pro, so what FOSS, Linux available video editing app would you recommend? It has to be capable of what I need, but as simple to use as possible, better if there's an Appimage. Thanks! :)

@npub15lr…p2vs It's surprisingly lightweight indeed. I use it by default in my old Celeron 3350 and it's really snappy. I really love it, just plain vanilla Gnome. Other than a tiling WM, which is my default to code, it is my favorite environment. :)

I'm abandoning all hope in finding an entry-level job as a programmer. At this point I've tried almost anything I could try, and it seems pointless: for every job I can only hope I could apply (almost all demand job experience), there's hundreds, if not more than a thousand, of people sending their CVs. I think I'll just apply to any other (shitty) job out of tech, and wait. But I think this will only be worse with each passing day. :(

@npub15lr…p2vs I'm a bit surprised it's on Tumbleweed already... They rolled it out really quick! :)
I guess the performance gains enabled them to only offer the option to "reduce" animations, but that could be inconvenient to people who are annoyed by motions I guess. And there's been some important changes in extensions, updates could take time... And that's one of the reasons I just disable extensions in Gnome and go as "vanilla" as I can. ;)

@npub1m26…2jhh I like kitty's image support and how it does ssh, but I went back to foot as default (you know, the one spawned by the default "open ${term}" kb shortcut) because first thing I do whenever I start my machine is spawning a minimum of 2 term windows, and kitty opens with a noticeable delay, while foot does instantly. A minor detail but, for my use cases kitty and foot are mostly equal so this breaks parity in favor of foot. :)

You know, one *could* write some decent web pages (I'm thinking in personal ones, but maybe for small bussiness and the like too) *just* using plain old HTML, CSS and (optional) JS. If you want to scale, or just feel like it, then add (or switch the former by) a backend language and a DBMS. I know because I've done this (save the "decent" part, but that's all on me). No frameworks, preprocessors, building steps, dependencies... Can you think of the advantages? There are some, I think. :)

@npub15lr…p2vs I have found that memory consumption for Gnome is way higher in Debian than in Ubuntu (once the setup is more or less equal), and is even lower in Arch. Still, the Gnome shell is hardly the major offender for RAM used in my typical setup. ;)

@npub1m26…2jhh Good to know. :) I was a bit weird to think something on Void repos wasn't working as expected... TBH it happened to me quite a while ago with some minor app that just segfaulted. I asked in the Void forum and I was told that it was a known upstream issue caused by this and that. But I consider it a very rare exception. ;)

But it sure looks promising, I think I'll try writing some CLI app just to get the hang of it, it looks fun to write. :)

I was thinking about adding a "niche" programming language to my CV. And I got curious about #crystal #crystallang , which seems to hit some interesting spots and looks really fun to learn. Does anybody have experience using it, ideally in a production environment? If yes, do you have any advice about it and/or some experiences to share, good or not-so-good? Thank you in advance. :)
(Oh and please, *don't* just reply with "learn $x instead". I'm aware of the alternatives already 😉).

@npub1m26…2jhh Yeah, same, I had heard before but I thought it would be more complicated to set up, and didn't expect it would behave so similar to dwm. :) It didn't run at first because I hadn't a seat management installed (I installed elogind), and then spouted some errors which gave me the clue to install polkit... Now it runs, and just looking at the ini example file, I've seen how it goes. And it goes great! :)

I've been looking for a dwm replacement for Wayland... I like Sway, but I prefer the dynamic window management of dwm. I think I may have found what I was looking for with river. I'm just testing it in my Void install, but with the default example config file it behaves pretty much as I wanted. :)

@npub1934…0q04 @npub10c6…x2jy @npub1ykv…ey6z It may be because I'm used to tiling WMs, but I use "vanilla" Gnome without those buttons mostly similarly as I would be using a tiling WM... With a workspaces and kb shortcuts workflow. The obvious difference is that tiling in Gnome is manual and more limited, but I rarely have more than 2 windows per workspace anyway. It works for me, but everybody's has its own workflow I guess. :)
