A most blessed feast if the Dormition if the Mother of God!
Not too many years ago the Abbess of a convent of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, a woman of righteous life, was delivering a sermon in the convent church on the feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God. With tears she entreated her nuns and the pilgrims who had come for the feast to accept entirely and wholeheartedly what the Church hands down to us, taking such pains to preserve this tradition sacredly all these centuries—and not to choose for oneself what is “important” and what is “dispensable”; for by thinking oneself wiser than the tradition, one may end by losing the tradition.
Thus, when the Church tells us in her hymns and icons that the Apostles were miraculously gathered from the ends of the earth in order to be present at the repose and burial of the Mother of God, we as Orthodox Christians are not free to deny this or reinterpret it, but must believe as the Church hands it down to us, with simplicity of heart.

Lots of great commentaries on the Gospels out there, no doubt, but this is my go to for daily devotional reading. Archbishop Averky also has commentaries for Acts of the Apostles, all of the Epistles, and St. John's Apocalypse. Highly recommend picking up the set.

It seems SI accepts the virgin birth of Christ so we would see eye to eye here. I'm not certain where he stands on things. In an earlier video of his he claims to follow "Nazarene Jewish Christianity" which effectively held the same views as the Orthodox Church, whereas in a debate video, he held an Arian view 🤷‍♂️
I saw he wrote a paper on "biblical materialism" but I cannot find it. If you know where to find it I'd look it over so I can better understand what he means by the term.

I've got no reason to block you nor will I. The meme I sent over was for a comedic effect, though id be lying if I didn't think there was truth buried in it.
Lots to unpack here but on Christ's Church being invisible, I'd obviously disagree. The advent of Christ is physical/material as is His baptism, transfiguration, miracles, passion, etc. His Church is no different as it marries, or is symbolic of Heaven and Earth meeting.
I don't disagree with corruption in the Church, it has always been the case and will continue to be an issue, after all, we've been in the end times since the Incarnation.

An excerpt from a recent article I read on substack by a fellow named Joshua.
"Addiction is proof that humans are capable of deep devotion — they just submit it to false gods."
Most people hear this as a clever observation. But for those who have sat with the Holy Fathers, it lands differently — as a precise theological diagnosis. And one that comes, praise be to God, with a cure.
You Were Built for This
Orthodox theology teaches that humans are not a machine prone to random errors. You were fashioned with intention, with love — for union with God Himself. The Fathers call this theosis: the progressive transformation of the human person into the likeness of Christ, not by ceasing to be human, but by becoming fully what humanity was created to be.
At the center of this transformation is the kardia — the heart. Not the sentimental organ of Western romanticism, but the deepest seat of the person, where intellect, will, and love converge. This heart loves. This heart worships. This heart yearns.
And here is the critical insight of the Orthodox tradition: that yearning cannot be switched off. It was placed there by God. It can only be aimed.
The Passions
Orthodox theology has a precise word for what happens when desire is misdirected: the pathe — the passions. Not emotions in the modern sense, but God-given drives that have become disordered through the fall. Gluttony is hunger for the infinite, fixed upon food. Lust is eros aimed at the flesh. Greed is the longing for permanence, aimed at wealth.
Addiction, in this framework, is not a character flaw. It is not weakness. It is the spectacle of a soul built for God burning with the same intensity as the greatest saints — attaching that burning to something finite. The intensity is never the problem. Only the object is wrong.

Jonathan Pageau recently on X (I'm not over there, but this was sent to me).
Following a bit of the Protestant polemics against Orthodoxy recently, and I realize just how difficult it is to communicate the mind of the Church across these lines.
A simple example is seeing people confused about whether someone who is not baptised and participating in Orthodox communion can be "saved". Protestant are noticing that there are different answers in their estimation, and so are confused about them. The confusion comes from the belief that being "saved" or not is about "where you go after you die", when for the Orthodox "saved" means being made whole, being healed, being restored to the original purpose God had for us.
For this reason, when Protestants see declarations of how communion in the body of Christ is the only way to salvation, they immediately think this is a declaration that all the non-Orthodox are going to hell after they die. When Protestants then hear the very same person who just told them that salvation is in full participation to the body of Christ go on to intimate we have nothing to say about the eschatological finality of any specific soul, it is like a short circuit that many Protestants cannot compute. This is what I could see when

were discussing and it is what I have seen in
@gavinortlund
's videos.
In a similar vein, when a Protestant says he has the "assurance of his own personal salvation", this is confusing to the Orthodox. Orthodox also obviously have assurance of salvation, that assurance is Christ. He shows us what it means to be made whole and makes us participate in that wholeness. But how can I say that I am "saved" if I see that I am still a wretch, still prideful and arrogant and sinful? So the Orthodox, knowing they are are still sinning, though also knowing Christ has made them grow in the virtues will say something like: "I know that I am being saved." That is I can see that I am being healed, being made whole, being reformed to the resemblence of God. But again, this completely confuses the Protestant who just wants to know what will happen when you die. What side of the fence will you end up on?
I am not sure how to get accross these lines, and I feel that unless we can, we will perpetually be talking past each other.

This excerpt goes HARD.
The man who has withdrawn from the world in order to shake off his own burden of sins, should imitate those who sit outside the city amongst the tombs, and should not discontinue his hot and fiery streams of tears and voiceless heartfelt groanings until he, too, sees that Jesus has come to him and rolled away the stone of hardness from his heart,
and loosed Lazarus, that is to say, our mind, from the bands of sin, and ordered His attendant angels:
Loose him (cf John 11:44) from passions, and let him go to blessed dispassion. Otherwise he will have gained nothing.
Those of us who wish to go out of Egypt and to fly from Pharaoh, certainly need some Moses as a mediator with God and from God,
who, standing between action and contemplation, will raise hands of prayer for us to God, so that guided by Him we may cross the sea of sin and rout the Amalek of the passions (Exodus 17).
That is why those who have surrendered themselves to God, deceive themselves if they suppose that they have no need of a director.
Those who came out of Egypt had Moses as their guide, and those who fled from Sodom had an angel.
The former are like those who are healed of the passions of the soul by the care of physicians: these are they who come out of Egypt.
The latter are like those who long to put off the uncleanness of the wretched body. That is why they need a helper, an angel, so to speak, or at least one equal to an angel.
For in proportion to the corruption of our wounds we need a director who is indeed an expert and a physician.
Those who aim at ascending with the body to heaven, need violence indeed and constant suffering especially in the early stages of their renunciation, until our pleasure-loving dispositions and unfeeling hearts attain to love of God and chastity by visible sorrow.
A great toil, very great indeed, with much unseen suffering, especially for those who live carelessly, until by simplicity, deep angerlessness and diligence, we make our mind, which is a greedy kitchen dog addicted to barking, a lover of chastity and watchfulness.
But let us who are weak and passionate have the courage to offer our infirmity and natural weakness to Christ with unhesitating faith, and confess it to Him; and we shall be certain to obtain His help, even beyond our merit, if only we unceasingly go right down to the depth of humility.

Saint John of Kronstadt was fiercely against pacifism.
He was once offered an honorary seat on the Council of the University of Dorpat, of which Tolstoy was also member. He responded:
“[I decline] the degrading honor of being placed on the same footing as that Godless man, Count Leo Tolstoy, the worst heretic of our evil days, and surpassing in intellectual pride all former heretics. I do not want to be associated with Antichrist. Moreover, I am astounded that the Council burns incense to an author who is the personification of Satan.”
Saint John of Kronstadt was also a supporter of the Union of Russian Peoples (URP), the largest group within the Black Hundreds. The URP, and Black Hundreds generally, were an ultra-nationalist counter-revolutionary militia dedicated to fighting communists wherever they could be found. The URP championed “Orthodoxy, Autocracy, and Nationality,” and saw fit to violently defend both God and country.
