yes and no: Until now you would first download a new app version, and then inside the app update the maps. But so far, you never would get newer maps without first updating the app (maybe you didn't notice because of having auto-app-updates enabled?)
From now on, you don't have to update the app version first, in regular intervals there'll be new maps available in-app!

you won't have to update that often, you can keep the older maps.
But, we know that many of our users also use CoMaps for actively contributing to OpenStreetMap - and for them having fresher local maps helps making better contributions!

Release 2026.05.06 is out on Codeberg, F-Droid, iOS, and soon on Google Play and brings a big new feature:
From this version onward, updating the map files of CoMaps is no longer tied to updating the app. Which means we can bring you fresh #openstreetMap based maps more often!

Version 2026.04.07 is already out on Codeberg, F-Droid, iOS and Flatpak -and soon on Google Play too!
The update includes #OpenStreetMap data from April 5, brings a refreshed outdoor map style, displays if organic options are available in stores/restaurants/…, and localized road shields for more countries.

thanks for the patience and suggestions! Next time you update the app/maps, you could try only downloading a smaller set of maps and see if that helps with the search experience (just to get a data point on whether it makes a difference under real-world conditions!)

in principle this already works, by typing a whole address one can find it (eg this search was made when the map was centered on a small village in Argentina).
Having said that, we're aware that the search needs to get some love to work better, as depending on the amount of maps you've downloaded etc the experience can be not perfect!

Our latest version, 2026.01.08, is available in all release channels!
Updates include more visual refreshes on Android (moving to Material 3) and an expanded #OpenStreetMap editor.
The OSM editor now supports a number of POI types that require multiple tags, like adding statues, Buddhist temples, coffee vending machines, etc.

currently only Panoramax images that are directly linked to an OSM object are displayed on the POI page. You can find those with this overpass turbo query: https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/2ivB (https://comaps.at/84JO8Zpzro/Fremdl%C3%A4ndische_Geh%C3%B6lze would be a direct link to an example)
Getting that overlay mode you mention is part of the ambition for 2026 :)

Fused Location (and similar approaches) make use of non-GPS sources to triangulate location (think e.g. WiFi's around you). The main benefits are a) if you have limited visibility to satellites it can still place you more accurately and b) it shortens the time to get a location fix, which can be quite long if you don't have a recent location.
