This card was particularly interesting to me for a few reasons: Firstly, it was being sold on eBay as new old stock, in a sealed box complete with the manual and driver disk. The seller had 6 of them, and they all disappeared within a few days. The price was quite reasonable considering the features that this card offers. Secondly, it is an accelerated card like the Tornado that we looked at last time, supporting a maximum resolution of 1152x870 and maximum colour depth of 24 bits. Thirdly... we'll get to that in the next post. There's some information on this card on LowEndMac here: https://lowendmac.com/video/microconv.html Attached are some pictures from when I unboxed the card a few months ago! Will probably need some help from an #AppleII expert… I have a PhoneNet adapter connected between my IIfx and IIGS, using the printer port on each machine, and terminated on both ends. On the IIGS, I have slot 7 set to “AppleTalk” and slot 1 (the printer port) set to “Your Card”. GS/OS 6.0.1 is installed to my MicroDrive/Turbo, which is sitting in slot 2. I have the AppleTalk package installed. On the IIfx, the router is showing the printer port as active, and there are no network range conflicts in the log. However, the IIGS isn’t able to see any zones (including my own) - this is the same behaviour I got when I tried to directly connect the machines (before #GlobalTalk). Any ideas? #MARCHintosh #VintageApple #AppleIIGS https://assets.oldbytes.space/assets.oldbytes.space/media_attachments/files/112/062/940/714/627/561/original/2ce6d24c38a6c098.jpeg npub1887gdmm79qmlkhaxcnk4p8lc3zlmmppca0zxt4t5r3uxlg363y5qx5mwt7 Scott Small Tonight’s plan: to try and get my Apple IIGS running on #GlobalTalk. I have my doubts this will work, since I was never able to get plain ol' LocalTalk to work with it. But maybe the Apple Internet Router will work better than the LocalTalk Bridge does? This does mean my node will be going up and down for a bit (and it will eventually come back with a second zone) #MARCHintosh npub1887gdmm79qmlkhaxcnk4p8lc3zlmmppca0zxt4t5r3uxlg363y5qx5mwt7 Scott Small So I’ve been browsing through folks’ #GlobalTalk file shares the last few days and haven't spotted any copies of #Macstodon in the wild yet. Hmm. Need to do something about that… ...like, what if I dropped a beta of the next version with the super-secret new feature as a GlobalTalk exclusive? 😛 Maybe I'll do that sometime in the next few days. #MARCHintosh npub1887gdmm79qmlkhaxcnk4p8lc3zlmmppca0zxt4t5r3uxlg363y5qx5mwt7 Scott Small @npub1nsq…23w7 Ah neat! I bought this card because when it came up on eBay, it looked much nicer than the two cards I had at the time. It was also only a 7-inch card rather than a 12-inch card. I assumed that unlike my existing cards, it would be accelerated. While there isn't any info on this card at LowEndMac, the manual and drivers are available online and can be found here: https://tinyurl.com/47x6v6vd So what are the specs? - It supports resolutions from 640x480 through 1152x872. - 16-bit colour is supported at 640x480 and 832x624, higher resolutions only support up to 8-bit colour. - A driver needs to be installed in order access certain resolution/refresh rate combinations, and to set the resolution from the Monitors control panel. That’s where all the good stuff is! npub1887gdmm79qmlkhaxcnk4p8lc3zlmmppca0zxt4t5r3uxlg363y5qx5mwt7 Scott Small Got successfully connected to the #MARCHintosh #GlobalTalk network tonight! File transfers are very slow, but print jobs go through quite fast! I think to do this "properly" I'd need another Mac that's directly wired to my router, so that visitors don't have to hop to the IIfx over Wifi and back again 😅 But what fun would it be if it wasn't at least a little bit hacky? The cool thing is that since the whole network is bridged, both the IIfx and the SE can see the remote side. This means in theory I could get my IIGS on the global network as well... except that I've never managed to make it work on the local network. But that's a project for another day. #RetroComputing #VintageApple #VintageMac https://assets.oldbytes.space/assets.oldbytes.space/media_attachments/files/112/035/418/764/059/569/original/062c941365ae1164.jpeg npub1887gdmm79qmlkhaxcnk4p8lc3zlmmppca0zxt4t5r3uxlg363y5qx5mwt7 Scott Small @npub13le…6saf Am I doing this right? Requesting #GlobalTalk network numbers 80-89! (Spent the evening trying to set this up and then figuring out why my local network kept breaking. My vintage Macs (and printer) are all speaking AppleTalk via Ethernet, not LocalTalk. npub1887gdmm79qmlkhaxcnk4p8lc3zlmmppca0zxt4t5r3uxlg363y5qx5mwt7 Scott Small The first #VintageMac #NuBus video card that I'm trying out for #MARCHintosh 2024 is the Radius GS/CM. This is a 12-inch card that runs at a fixed resolution of 1152x882. According to LowEndMac, it is unaccelerated, and supports up to 24-bit colour: https://lowendmac.com/video/radiusgsc.html So, fun fact: this is actually the first time I've tried out this card. It's the card that came with my IIfx when I bought it from eBay a couple of years ago - but because it uses a non-standard resolution, neither of the monitors I had at the time supported it! So I promptly shelved the card and bought another (which we'll see tomorrow). Last year, however, I acquired an older Samsung monitor with a VGA input, which is better about handling less common resolutions. So I should finally be able to try out this card! This year, I'm starting off the month with a collection of #VintageMac #NuBus video cards that I've picked up off eBay over the last couple of years. It's time to find out... ...which is the fastest/slowest? …which one(s) are accelerated? (or _pretend_ to be) …does having the drivers installed make a difference? …what resolution and colour depth is supported? (Is lowendmac correct?) ...do they support breaking into MacsBug? …can they boot into Linux? Or do they only work under #MacOS? The results may surprise you! Here's how it's going to work. Each day, for the next few days, I'm going to take one of these cards and put it into my Mac IIfx, running System 7.1.1. I'm going to run at least two benchmarks - a full benchmark from Speedometer (so we can see if, say, the video card degrades CPU performance) - and a video-only benchmark from MacBench 3.0. It seems like every version of MacPython prior to 1.5.1 has disappeared from the Internet… (UPDATE: We found 1.1, 1.3.3 and 1.4, see comments in thread!) In other news, I learned that you can install a non-CFM version of the MacPython interpreter by choosing a custom install in the Installer app. This version will run on System versions as low as 7.0, and it will also work on 68000 processors. The catch, however, is that it only supports Python scripts and not standalone applications. In theory, however, one might be able to run #Macstodon directly from the source .py files… #RetroComputing #RetroProgramming #Apple #Mac #MacOS #ClassicMac #68K npub1887gdmm79qmlkhaxcnk4p8lc3zlmmppca0zxt4t5r3uxlg363y5qx5mwt7 Scott Small @npub1svs…p66u Regarding divide views (columns), that doesn’t work for me. After opening five divide views, trying to open more results in them becoming invisible. I can also reproduce this behaviour by shrinking Mona’s window, eventually only four or three divide views will be shown. Pressing Tab only cycles through the divide views displayed on screen, and two finger swipe left/right has no effect. However, using CMD-Shift-D does close the “invisible” divide views. This is on Mac OS 13.5 and Mona 5.7.1. npub1887gdmm79qmlkhaxcnk4p8lc3zlmmppca0zxt4t5r3uxlg363y5qx5mwt7 Scott Small @npub1nsq…23w7 @npub1svs…p66u 4) If I have multiple windows open, and exit/relaunch the app, _all_ of those windows should be restored, not just one of them. 5) Let me add unlimited columns to a window (and allow me to scroll horizontally between them). Right now it stops at 5 visible - I can add more columns but they’re invisible with no way to access. But yeah, other than those small annoyances, @MonaApp is by far the best Mastodon client I’ve used. npub1887gdmm79qmlkhaxcnk4p8lc3zlmmppca0zxt4t5r3uxlg363y5qx5mwt7 Scott Small Hey @npub1svs…p66u , Is there any way to change the “Refresh” options on a per-timeline basis, as opposed to globally? I’d like my Home timeline to maintain the current reading position, but for certain lists, I’d rather use the “Scroll to latest post” option (or alternately, disable auto-refresh entirely for those lists and only those lists). npub1887gdmm79qmlkhaxcnk4p8lc3zlmmppca0zxt4t5r3uxlg363y5qx5mwt7 Scott Small Reposting later in the day for alternate timezones - can anyone help me find drivers for my new early 90's NuBus video card?
