Last Notes npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd I did update just now when I saw your post but my sats were already back in the wallet. 👍 I had checked a couple of hours ago for an update but there wasn’t one at that time npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd Fixed! These were the instructions that worked. Hope this can help others: “Go to settings —> wallet —> use external wallet. Toggle that and your sats will show up and you’ll be prompted to upgrade your wallet. “ npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd Thanks 🙏 worked perfectly. I wasn’t too scared, just figured I missed something due to the upgrade. All good! 👍 npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd Zero balance in my wallet now. They have introduced a new concept to being able to upgrade your stable of bikes in game and earn a bike that is nicer than Tron - the Halo. I would have liked this at the beginning of indoor season (northern hemisphere) but still happy to put some of those excess drops 💦 to good use. This brings back so many vivid memories of my childhood: from cleaning bugs out of the sap pails to the smell of the boil on the kitchen table hotplates for days npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd That was the traditional view (fatter made higher rolling resistance) but tests prove that the opposite is true in the real world (ie not on perfectly smooth surfaces). Something to do with wider tires deforming better at the contact patch. The only advantage to a skinny tire is the aero of the frontal surface area but that is negligible especially with wider and deeper rims these days. Lots and lots of published studies but traditions die hard npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd 40mm ROAD tires - not mountain bike tires. And yes, compared to "skinny tires" they are faster. The sweet spot for the "fastest" for the pros on roads is still being debated but the pro teams are now riding 28mm and up (which would have been a huge fat tire not that long ago). I am not a pro and i can keep up with any Saturday group on 40mm and the comfort is so so much better npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd It is not up for debate any more - 40mm road tires are faster for nearly everyone - just try it 🚲 https://m.primal.net/PjKk.png npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd So true- many great memories made in the garage wrenching on stuff with the kids #nevent1q…lddy npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd Just adding context in case anyone else cannot see the post I was commenting on - it was a picture of a snowy / icy urban bike path npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd 👍 yes npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd Hey @uno - I think there is a long us feeling the same. He swings by a trendy local bar, known for its sharp-tongued bartender who’s seen it all. Chad, with a beer in hand, asks the old, grizzled bartender, “So, what’s the deal with the fuckers in this city?” The bartender, while pouring a stiff drink, shoots back, “What was the deal with the assholes in the city you just bailed from?” Chad, with a scoff, says, “They were all backstabbing pricks, not a single one you could trust.” The bartender chuckles, “Sounds like you’re gonna find the same damn thing here, buddy.” A few days later, another dude, Mike, rolls into town with his startup. He’s all about that positive energy, ready to shake things up. He walks into the same bar and asks the bartender, “What’s the word on the street about the people here?” The bartender, cleaning a glass, asks, “What was the vibe with the guys in your last city?” Mike grins, “They were fucking awesome, man. Helpful, creative, all about teamwork.” The bartender, with a smirk, says, “Well then, you’ll probably find these bastards just as cool.” npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd Looks like home - love it! #nevent1q…gz8n npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd Life is too short to be serious even in emergencies - case and point spotted at a local retailer restroom : https://m.primal.net/OMya.jpg npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd need my first zap please! npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd “Gravel” Makes Its Way to Running and Salomon Has the Shoe for You https://www.runnersworld.com/gear/a63421509/salomon-drx-defy-grvl-review/ #running npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd PSA: Sunset is at 5 pm today in Ottawa Canada So looking forward to riding on this spot soon 🌇 https://m.primal.net/NzeD.png 📸 credit: sparkinordinary /ig npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd https://m.primal.net/NyFS.png I am not completely sold on 1x drivetrains yet but this new gravel bikes ticks a lot of boxes. They go from completely clear to a fairly dark tint (where others cannot see your eyes easily). I found the biggest benefit was when the trails go through the forests. I used to pull my sunglasses down on my nose and look over the top of them so as not hit a root at speed. With these they adjust quickly enough that I don’t even notice the darkness on the trails. They are also great for finishing a ride at night. Personally, I don’t like riding with my eyes unprotected at night night and used to carry a spare clear lens. The only minor complaint is that there is a very small amount of optical distortion in the edges of the view but not really noticeable. The frames are a cheaper plastic but they have lasted over a year of riding so far. The brand is Rockbros and you can find them on Amazon easily. So cheap that I don’t mind if they get smashed or broken as I would just buy another. Sometimes cheap just works. #gravel https://m.primal.net/KmMF.jpg npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd The above sentiment was shamelessly paraphrased by me from Jose Been on X (@josebeentv) npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd welcome aboard the nostr train James! npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd for the Lycra haters Lycra hides nothing so why would you try? I would very surprised that you could fit 40mm tires on it however. The newest 2024 model states that the max is 35mm. This would be due to the tire hitting the downtube in the rear and/or hitting the top of the fork crown in the front. Just a heads up as well - the tire width on the package very rarely is the actual tire width after installed on the rim. The industry really needs to fix this. Depending on how wide your rim and how much pressure you run will dictate the width of the tire when mounted. That said I have found Schwalbe to be fairly close. For example 700x35c on 25mm width rim at 45psi = 35mm measured width. Thanks for the offer of zaps! Obviously I am new here on nostr and still figuring things our (including every client I can find) but have not ben able to link my self-custodial lightning wallet (Aqua) with my profile. I would say that tire width is the most important metric to look at for getting some stability on the trails. You didn't mention what the trail is made of (sand, dirt, fine gravel, rocks, mud, etc) but that would dictate what kind of tire tread that would give you the best traction. I am going to assume that it is mostly hard with some loose stuff in the corners. If that is the case you would likely prefer tire that has very small nubs (almost like a road slick) I would go as wide you can fit in your bike frame up to 40mm. Even 30-32mm will make a large stability difference. The other factor is tire air pressure - lower is better on trails but if you have tubes, lower will give you pinch flats. This is why tubeless has gotten so popular. You can run much lower pressure in a tubeless tire. This was the biggest game changer for me a few years ago. So much more comfort and control on the trails and not any slower on the roads. As for brands, I have tried many and am fond of Schwalbe Gravel One and Pirelli Cinterello H. There are many great tires out there and people get very passionate in defending brands. Hope this helps! Made by Redshift Sports (not sponsored but open to offers 😊) This stem contains rubber type blocks that you can pair up depending on your weight and riding style. It is like magic in that removes all the annoying vibrations without it flexing noticeably. I only notice it when climbing / sprinting out of the saddle and really pulling on the bars. Even then it is only barely noticeable movement. it really works and does not waste any of your power. Long rides on old train beds feel just as comfy on the heads as pavement. The company just launched a new series of 55 mm & 75mm that I would have gotten instead of the longer 100mm that I did get. https://redshiftsports.com https://nostrcheck.me/media/b7df52fea61d770fdbdbbbf85a8ad1831d0a97e6c3fe0c139719bc0902f2434e/64f4fe49a680636cbef618f14e698e06f01d1beb9a333fad8dfa9ee27a76f0b3.webp https://nostrcheck.me/media/b7df52fea61d770fdbdbbbf85a8ad1831d0a97e6c3fe0c139719bc0902f2434e/c7c3cd5138b9dbb06c90df7ab2201eb6a901e9b607a3d21f140add728fedb8c9.webp npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd Maybe just maybe we are a bunch on contrarians here on nostr. Just ride and explore 🚵🚴♂️ ♀️ npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd on the ski hills we called them "posers" npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd Flats vs clips post I swore by clipless pedals for decades and close to 200,000km of riding. mostly between SPD and Crank Brothers Candy series, both which allowed lots of float and were low maintenance. All that changed during the lockdowns when I was doing a lot of indoor riding and had time to experiment. At that time I was plagued by a persistent callus on the sole of one foot that was painful to walk on. After much trial and error it seemed like the culprit was my highend (Sidi) cycling shows. There was a very small raised gap where the insole met the side of the shoe near the ball of one foot. Over time this tiny iratant cause the callus to forms under the skin. I had switched to their wide shoes a few years ago so began a hunt of a even wider show to solve the issue. This led to a rabbit hole of flat pedals and street shoes and sandals. Coming from a road cycling background this was completely new to me but old school for bmx and mountain bikers. I decided to try and test it semj-scientifically using my indoor training bike that was connected to Zwift. I could see if power output at the pedals was being affected by the pedals and shoes. I did lots of structured interval training, long rides, long steep climbs and races. Results: I could ride in open toe sandals (berkenstocks) very comfortably and with no noticible loss of power except in full out sprinting. There was a very large loss of 20%+ in sprints (20-30 second full gas efforts) Out of the saddle climbing led to some slippage with the sandals too. Based on this I decided to try some dedicated flat pedal shoes and settled on some 5-10 (now owned by Adidas) Trail shoes. The rubber on the sole is like glue to the pedals and the shoes are comfy for all day rides and walking like regular shoes. I did a weekend tour recently of 180km per day and had zero issues with comfort, power or control. All this to say that I can never see myself going back to clips again. I would guess that over 90% over serious rec cyclists would also be better served by flat pedals but on the weekend tour with a couple thousand other riders, I did not notice anyone else riding on flats. Unless you are racing or doing narly downhill mountain biking give flats a go. the pedals are so much cheaper as are the shoes and no cleats are needed. Bonus is being able to walk like a normal person at the cafe stops or not slipping on tiles at the office building. https://nostrcheck.me/media/b7df52fea61d770fdbdbbbf85a8ad1831d0a97e6c3fe0c139719bc0902f2434e/c31b74597691930ada2b105c60aa7135dd1316d66ffc49193a76c779ea14e7b5.webp npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd Thanks - if only I could stop tinkering with it 😄 npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd Thank you - followed back npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd Congratulations - welcome to the rest of your life (the best part)! npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd Thanks for my first reply! 🙏 npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd Trying to avoid posting bitcoin related stuff but just showing that I do have more than a passing interest in it https://nostrcheck.me/media/b7df52fea61d770fdbdbbbf85a8ad1831d0a97e6c3fe0c139719bc0902f2434e/5040a1d2ccf8393676a10f1099d52d63da79bf5a3e76728bd761dc13a0ce9dc2.webp npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd Introduction - Hi everyone. Picture this: I'm pedaling when out of nowhere, this fluffy-tailed daredevil decides to play chicken with my bike. I swerve, he jukes, back and forth and back again. But somehow we both live to tell the tale. Moral of the story? Always expect the unexpected when you're on two wheels, because squirrels apparently have a death wish and a need for speed. Remember, cyclists: Brake for coffee, not for squirrels. npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd For anyone that is curious, once a chain has been hot-waxed properly with wax (and a bit of teflon) the cleaning is easy. Just remove big dirt and grime with a chain cleaner filled with water and a touch of soap. Then remove the chain and immerse and swirl it in very hot (near boiling) water for a minute. Immediately wipe the chain down with a clean rag to remove any residual dirt and water. Hang the chain to air dry and reattach to bike when ready. I find it best to keep two chains in rotation so that i am not tempted to keep riding a dirty chain. Dirt in the bushings is the chain killer. How often to clean? Depends on the conditions but I go by sound. The chain sounds louder when it needs to be cleaned. I never go more than 200km max (a week or so) without cleaning and usually much sooner than that. Highly recommend Wipperman Chains for long life and amazing quick connects. npub1kl049l4xr4mslk7mh0u94zk3svws49lxc0lqcyuhrx7qjqhjgd8qkrlydr GravelNerd hot waxed chain #2 fresh out of hot water cleaning after dusty trail ride. quick wipe down and it is shiny and quiet again for the next 100 or so. https://image.nostr.build/d16dfe3ee6c5cc2c46f949f2872b1708b6bd629f3e1338e1af38971dcbaf3e2b.jpg
