So, the program was developed with QT5 and I made the dumb mistake of installing a Kubuntu 24.04 VM (which comes with QT6) to test compile it on... There were a lot of issues with libraries, because many packages aren't named or linked the same way anymore, but in the end after some hacking of the Makefile (yes, I know I should have changed the .pro file, but the Makefile was easier to mod), I actually got it to compile!

I've seen like 3 Linux reviews on YouTube in the past week where the Zoomer YouTuber is complaining about how programs like GIMP (formerly "The GIMP") have "dated" UIs.
Like... Huh? Maybe some of us actually *like* the old UIs that have text menu bars and such rather than the hamburger menu bullcrap that comes with modern GNOME distros. I grew up computing in the Win98 and XP era where all of that stuff that these zoomers seem to hate were simply the norm

Today, I came into possession of someone's old Intel iMac. Intel Core2Duo 2.4GHz with 2 GB (lol) of RAM. The last person who used it complained it was slow and clunky and basically a glorified web surfing machine.
The first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. It runs pretty okay now, given the dated specs.

I've lived in 2 countries where Muslims outnumber Christians and visited India (where Muslims outnumber Christians) and the call to prayer is really not that annoying. (Until a few months ago, I lived within earshot of the mosque's loudspeaker here). I'm sure there's still a volume rule that the mosque in NYC will have to abide by. And with all of the traffic in NYC, no one will be able to hear it anyway.

@npub1mjr…w8z3 @npub1pnp…52zw Yeah, but I got a BA at the same time, which got me a few jobs that -required- ANY BA. So instead of studying something that was "well-paying" or difficult, I took German, because I was able to test out of the 100 and 200-level courses. I got my BA in 5 semesters (2.5 years). As for my MA, I studied in Thailand at an international school. It was dirt cheap, I got fieldwork experience (can't learn that from books) and made good connections which helped me later when I moved to Burma.

Parents who grew up in educated communities understand the value of Liberal Arts. To the rest, college is a glorified trade school and that's how many universities are transforming themselves (to get more funding).

@npub1mjr…w8z3 @npub1pnp…52zw That's part of it for merit-based. My argument is more of a steelman against the "[race] people are only high-achieving in university because of generational wealth". I argue that anyone who receives a scholarship (especially a race-based one) is also benefiting from generational wealth. So, the only people who really are disadvantaged in terms of getting into university are those who cannot get any kind of scholarship, financial aid, and don't have good grades.
