If the FBI were to look through your computer, would you be concerned about your search history?
A few dark samples:
-human kidney viability in organ cooler
-facial appearance, various states of decomp
-drill bit size, type for brain implant surgery
-effects, dosage of rohypnol
-can a seizure brought on through ECT cause heart attack
-time to death, hanging
-efficacy of various suicide methods
That last one led to weeks of Google asking every day if I was okay.

What books/resources have you used to improve your writing?
I've read a lot of craft books and have gleaned nuggets from most of them. I've also worked through a few of the "Great Courses" lectures on writing, and gotten bits and pieces there also. But for the past few years, my most useful resource for craft enhancement has been listening to the Writing Excuses podcast. The most useful one for motivation and commiseration has been chatting with fellow writers, like you folks. 🙂

Do you use foreshadowing, and if so, how do you do it?
It's a mixed bag.
Sometimes an event occurs in a story, and I find the perfect place to drop a hint about it a few chapters earlier.
Sometimes I'm scratching my head and trying to figure out what happens next, and I recall some bit of what I thought was descriptive fluff earlier on...and the fluff gains new respect.
And sometimes I pick some reference so obscure that 1 reader in 1000 will pick up on it.

@npub10n9…tjug Perhaps the "writing gene" is simply the mental switch that gets flipped on for some of us, that burning desire to tell a story. We all learn the craft through practice, but our interest drives us to do just that.
I draw an analogy to auto repair: I am a poor mechanic because I do not have any interest in being a better one. If I can afford it, I would much prefer to pay someone else to work on my car, thus freeing up my time to write another story.

What animal would you like as a muse and why?
I'm partial to serpents. They live in dark places, studying the world of noise and light around them without becoming a part of the hustle—much like I prefer to observe the world and later pour what I have learned onto the page. They also have the power of transformation, of shedding skin and emerging anew—here I can draw an analogy to the story that changes from first draft to finished work.

When her grandmother was dying, ten-year-old Haley was afraid to step closer, afraid to come in contact with the gray shell of the person she'd grown up with, the one who listened to her and loved her for who she was. She has never forgiven herself for not hugging her nana goodbye before her mother arrived and dragged her out of the room.
