If I want an offline mail store (local folder) in Thunderbird, kept in sync across multiple machines via Nextcloud (and encrypted on the server via Cryptomator), it looks like I can use mbox but not maildir, which is rather annoying.
An IMAP server is likely the better answer, but it lacks the key thing I want: the email messages to be encrypted themselves (i.e. not disk encryption or transport encryption) on the server.
Thoughts from anyone who has tackled the same problem themselves very welcome!

I have - I think - found the problem. It is that gvmd is failing with cmake, because of the version of PostgresQL that I am using.
The fix that I was expecting - adding the version to the cmake check routine - has not worked so far, but I will make it work :)

I'm interested in your thoughts from an ethics point of view.
You buy a laptop (or indeed any device with storage) second hand.
Do you install a new OS / wipe the drive before you do anything else?
Do you see if you can log in / recover data?
Does it depend on the age / novelty of the machine?
Normally I wipe it if I won't be using it immediately, else I install a new OS. I don't attempt to access someone else's data.
But with my 30 year old ThinkPad, I am oddly tempted...

I also haven't seen any meaningful discussion of the firm's own supervision procedures - should someone have looked over the shoulder / remotely at the screen of the person submitting the form, before they did so, as a peer review?
Would someone have reviewed a paper copy form before it was sent in?
All humans make mistakes, and perhaps there is scope for improving the portal. Perhaps the firm might also need to look at its own processes.

I have not used the portal, so I am not well placed to comment, but I understand that, on every page, there is a clear reference to the parties' names. If that is the case, then while this is unfortunate, it might suggest a lack of attention to detail.
I'm not sure that it is particularly different to picking up the wrong paper file, and then filling in the details of the wrong party on a paper form, and submitting that?

The UK is to criminalise the creation of non-consensual “deepfake” intimate images.
I can’t find more detail than is on the BBC (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-68823042), but it appears that the offence will relate to creation, whether or not there is any intent to distribute.
Unclear whether possession of such an image created by someone else will be an offence.
Hopefully more details to follow.

My approach of buying secondhand whenever it makes sense to do so is working out really rather well, tbh.
I prefer it, I'm not usually too worried about a warranty, and the product is typically a fraction of buying it new.
(Main exceptions recently have been SSDs, and the Xreal glasses.)

Sometimes, I wonder if some have lost sight of the fact that the fediverse comprises numerous different computers exchanging data with each other according to their own rules and settings (including banlists).
The fediverse varies minute by minute, according to the machines comprising it, and their configurations (which can and do change).

I really dislike viewing websites without a dark mode.
I find many sites far too bright, and often with light text on a very light background.
Thankfully, anyone can modify a site's CSS in their own browser, and extensions like Dark Reader can automate this:

I fixed my drone!
It has been on todo list for ages - three years now - and I finally had the time and can-be-bothered-ness to do it.
Three different screwdrivers but... it works!
I've had a rather fun flight around the garden, until the batteries needed charging again.

Apropos a popular toot, about three months ago, I built a joke “decoded.legal AI chatbot” (in reality, just an html form), which responded to any question with “it depends”.
A self-deprecating legal joke, to be released alongside our “AI policy”.
I never made it public, as I didn’t want screenshots of people posting questions about abhorrent things, and getting “it depends” answers from even a joke on a domain I control.
Perhaps I worry too much.
