Came across mistflower (Conoclinium coelestinum) a few yrs back & was enamored w/ those pale purple flowers that remind me of coral or anemones.

Lol!
Too cold to photograph but did make it down to the river briefly. The great thing about this weather is that the river freezes. Found 7-8 bald eagles hanging out around the open water below the dam. I just need that windchill above -5°F so the frostbite danger is lower and I'll be back 👍

I'd have to disagree with "notorious" machine world view. I think engineers understand the limitations of their own models but mechanistic models can produce perfectly acceptable results and there's nothing philosophically wrong with using them. While we should always be cognizant of what is or may be missing I also think your view of engineer's may be a bit outdated.

BTW, I had to carry the bags about a mile before I got to a garbage can on the trail. I didn't consider it an undue burden and I was carrying two bags. If it was my dog I would have put it on the floor/in the trunk of my car or in another bag until I found a place to dispose of it. Take out what you bring in👍.

I appreciate the idea but there are costs associated with that. The former city employee who told me about the $8k/yr said that often owners leave the bags on the ground next to a garbage cans. I carried the bags about a mile up trail before I got to a garbage can.
But it's like any trail anywhere. You take with whatever you bring in. This is the entrance. The parking lot and exit are directly behind me.

I live in a community next to Iowa City, Iowa. Don't have a car (by choice) so I either walk, bike, bus, or uber. Iowa City started free buses just over two years ago.

Same here, lol. I don't even like to bike ride on windy days 🤷‍♂️. Don't mind walking but not a fan of riding a bike into the wind. Takes the fun out of it, lol. Few years back we had a major derecho come through. I happened to be outside when it hit. Never felt so unsafe outside before. Luckily I got inside before too many things started flying 😬.

I love sub zero as long as there's not much wind. Nothing like that little burn when you inhale through your nose to put a pep in your step, lol. I tell people I go out in sub zero (°F) and they tend to freak out😬. With my thermals I'm never cold but I do get the occasional ice buildup on my beard, lol.

Acquired a lovely little polka dot plant last mo. Known for their incredible foliage. Wasn't expecting it to produce teeny-tiny flowers. Also wasn't expecting the hairy leaves at that scale. So alien 👽. Gonna be a fun macro subject 👍

You're not going to believe it but I was planning on posting this later. When I went to photograph the orchid today I was surprised to find the little polka dot plant I bought last month had bloomed. Didn't even know it would 🤷‍♂️ . The foliage is awesome at this scale too.

One of my favorite rabbit photos. Took it at the Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary in Chicago in 2022.
Don't think I've seen a handsomer cottontail with such gorgeous fur.
