It was nearly 40 years ago when I quit Apples OS ROM group, my last pro coding job in that sit at desk in office mode. I hated the corporate structure then, and disgusted by half (only half) of the people I worked with. And I know they thought poorly of me (totally accept that).

There is no encroachment from the modern container, it *is* a z80. With very sweet peripherals (serial, disks, screen, all buffered). It's a classic black box.
We know so much more now, half a century of experiences and probably 1000x participants.

The Internet is already dead.... I got to talk to a number of queer and/or punk young people (teens and 20s) who are fairly prodigious makers of media stuff, all print and music, are clever with phones and computers, but don't put their stuff on the net.
Not only has it become difficult and expensive (shit hosting services, all of them) but once they put things up on the net, none of the promises come true -- none of its features work really at all. Search engines are dead. Absolutely no fucking human is gonna do the promotional bullshit that doesn't even work any more anyways.
I had a world changing experience at this Pretty Gritty show. Sold/gave away 90 or so of the 100 anthologies (so didn't have to cart them home). But mostly networking or the human kind, preparing for the long haul in front of us.
This Internet has been declining in relevance for me for some time. Soft nothing on my websites are searchable, and I know they're cleanly indexable. And I too find little of interest these days.
Technology on and of itself is fucked fascist crap I've long lost interest in. So no loss there.
My short term future is in print, and in computing machinery I can put my hands on, and put into the hands of others.
The net has become a bag on the side. I still deeply love computing, the mechanization of thought, the rigor and experimentation, but this corporate shit im utterly done with.

I've had this lovely cup for 20 years, maybe more. Given to me by a friend, a thrift store find. Someone bonked it bad, the steel was caved in and I used it for pencils etc.
Now I'm thinking I might try to rejuvenate it.
I carefully reshaped it (old ball end pushrods are great) and lots of citric acid got the rust off.
I don't have an enameling setup. I do have two really good hot air tools. Is there "spot" enamel?
I'm more interested in function than perfection. I could just JB Weld it I suppose.

It's just that at this point, here in the US, I'm tending to think differently about comms and their survivability.
Signal is what it is. I do trust them, but they have this very large semi central system that has features, and vulnerabilities, and those won't structurally change in the short term. And no one knows if we're gonna have a long term here, just now.

Finally nailed all the reliability bugs out of MP/M. I've got two machines running heavy continuous programs in all four windows, not one single problem for five days. (Except one ill-designed BASIC test program generates math OVERFLOW errors every couple days.)
Making metal cabinets for them now. Latest board revision has a piezo and driver (hope it works) and so keyclick and disk noises and general purpose sound will come next.
MP/M is pretty minimal as an OS but wow, you can do modern-type work flows with it (editing in one window; perusing related files on another; compiles and tests in another.
No inter-window cut'n'paste but I think I can fix that at the device level...
Someone not me said thatr MP/M II 2.1 is probably the most sophisticated software ever written for the 8080, and I will certainly agree. Its pretty fkn amazing.
What kills performance is disk access. The OS does zero buffering. There's no memory. The driver is doing blocking/deblocking per-drive so there's that, and the CPU is very quick (and soon, quicker) but otherwise it's surprisingly usable, 40 years later.

Absolutely. This is supported by the fact that nearly zero of them share that wealth. Dozens of cities have done variations of gauranteed minimum income, and every one of them have shown that ordinary folks, given money, spread that boon to everyone around them.
Other than Mackenzie Scott, I don't know of ONE SINGLE RICH PERSON doing anything even close. One billionaire could eg. pay off every American citizen's medical debt. Build 10,000 parks or libraries. They would be beloved for that single act. NOT ONE HAS.
I personally know one person that might have become a billionaire but they've been funding long shot social stuff and said out loud, 'my heirs dont need this much money'. So there must be others.

my 14" vertical mill, new in 1990. Many of my hand tools I bought when I was 18, around 1972... Starrett tools I bought late 90s. Wilton vise, 30 years. I have a 6" precision steel rule made by Union Tool (Orange MA), easily 100 years old, I let it get pitted, so since replaced with a Starrett.
My Tektronix TDS-212 scope I bought new in 1995. Bench adjustable power supplies from the 1970s (bought used from Apex Electronics). Cheapest Giga-sample 2-channel scope at the time...
Though I don't use it, I could: Hewlett Packard Electronic Counter, 521C, five-digit display, electron tube monstrosity. Actually it needs a home, for free, must pick up in Los Angeles! Seriously. Worked perfectly last time I used it, a year or so ago. Come get! It's not that big.
A Cubic Corp V-45 digital voltmeter, alas, it's gone erratic, telephone stepper relay contacts oxidized I think, it's accurate to 0.1% still, it's a first-gen "DVM", a closed-loop automated Wheatstone bridge. MP/M as cp/m dev machine is *almost* great... Editing C source in grey window, running the program (grep) in the green one, compile and link in the blue window.
Lol fixing bugs that are basically cheats acceptable in cp/m that are not legal in mp/m, a large part of why mp/m did not catch on.
OMFG is it slow. Compile and link takes 15 seconds, was one. Most of that will improve with known solutions, but probably not all of it. But wow three windows is wonderful.
It may be that a two window solution is optimum, we'll see.

I used these modems back then, they were pretty good. 16,800 bits/sec. Zyxel u1496.
The world didn't/doesn't take standards all too seriously. Zyxel's were non-standard, but did adhere to many standards, so were quite interoperable.
People want fast and cheap. Committees want standards. Cheating and shortcuts are common.

Often the modems themselves emulated file transfer protocols on the serial side, so that internally they could cheat with their neighbors. As long as the serial link to serial link conveyed bits fast and reliably, most people didn't care much! lol

It's partly apples and oranges comparisons: the 8 bit 8080 had an average instruction size of 2 or 2.5 bytes or something. An Intel i7 instruction l, nop, is 8 bytes minimum. So right off HELLO WORLD is probably huge.
I assume i7 bare iron initialization, powerrcon to program execute, is larger than all of cp/m and basic utilities.
Of course that i7 may umm accomplish a little more computation once running...

I have a question for a bicycle/ebike geek... I've got a Radpower Rad Rover 6 Plus, I've had it three years. Still love it.
It's got a 42 tooth chainwheel, and top gear has 14 teeth, exactly 3:1. A small firmware change moves the top assist speed from 20 to 25; from a close look at my pedalling habits I've determined I want the pedal rate at 24 mph to be what it is now, at 20 mph.
Currently at 20mph I'm pedalling way too fast for comfort, I'd be happier slower, with more pedal force. My goal is comfortable 20 - 22 max mph cruising.
So doing the math it looks like a change to 3.6:1 ratio puts my current 20 mph pedalling at 24 mph. That would mean a 50 tooth chainring.
That seems like a big jump. I suspect it's not quite this simple (human in the loop confounds logic).
Any bike folk have suggestions? PS: my current lowest gears are super granny gears, I won't be losing much for hill climbing.
EDIT: My thinking is I'd pick something like 48T.

It's well discussed in texts, of course pre net. Not much of the world is on the Internet.
If you can find 1950s McGraw Hill Electrical Engineering titles -- there's probably close to 100 of them, I have maybe 20 -- that world will open right up.
Old tech and especially old science is intentionally thrown away; unlike arts, eg music, where the past can be both ignored or reversed but always valued.
40s through 60s a lot of "analog" techniques -- aka physics -- were of course applied to every problem.
Now that "everything's symbolic" physical approaches are forgotten.

The volumes of gas fish deal with are very small. And with low volume comes low absolute force -- it's force per unit area that matters. So some molecular mechanism at a membrane can put tremendous but tiny force on O2 molecules to pass into a bladder, but the circumstances are nothing like a macroscopically large pressure cylinder. This is an apples vs oranges comparison.

Ok progress on MP/M... Got three consoles running, with banked memory. Performance seems good, with an initial half assed check. LOL preemptive multiuser multitasking on a z80.
Aspects of banked memory still confuse me and are poorly documented or I can't find it (hence missing 4th TMP) but I'll find it.

Yes. What was interesting to me was the discussion of Chinese folk hopping from job to job, picking up skills and meeting people. That is PRECISELY my work experience. My skill set is so broad people think I'm making shit up. Not always deep but I can find a way to dig myself out of very many holes.
Beyond that mundanity, our American and Western culture has internalized what I see as the Christian mind/body split, and act as if it is fact. Certainly all of so call a-I (lol if I use the obvious phrases my filters will block replies) has assumed and designed around this since the 1950s (the Macy Conferences are filled with this nonsense).
This destructive idea factors into racism and the valuing of human labor. Into education and class, the devaluing of manual anything. And it's now become the root idea behind the destruction of the USs legacy of hands on skills and (I hate this word) entrepreneurship, the starting up of lots of little businesses to solve whacky problems.
The destruction of US culture -- already way beyond stopping now -+ is rooted in this fucked up mind/body nonsense.
My friend Simon Penny writes books about embodiment and ramifications etc and it's like an uphill battle. Oh well.

First off, this guy is crazy smart, his views on LLMs, which I posted here to a great silence (too many people seem to think that the problems with LLMs are technical? lol, yes I'm making fun of you).
The book he's referring to below, about "Process knowledge", is directly about human skill, passed from person to person, through social structures and apprenticeships. The MAJOR THING MISSING from American work places today. You get skills with your body, no human or animal is a mind floating in the aether...
...the kind of thing you get by going into a physical workplace. But of course the value of that place is entirely contingent upon being pleasant or tolerable, with co-workers, more skilled and lesser, solving problems together, developing solutions, whatever, not just hunkered down in surveillance cubicles coding in solitude. I wouldn't work in those either.

Went to the bank to deposit a check, and take out cash, larger than the ATM limit.
Hand check, ID, ATM card etc to teller. Teller asks my employment-something. I said "retired". (Which increasingly sounds quaint and other-world-ish.) She types... asks again. I repeat.
This goes round a couple times, me now paying attention. I tell her I am not employed. I do not have a job. I collect Social Security. Blunt, genuinely polite. I'm quite puzzled now.
Finally she asks, umm, well, what did you do before? I ask why does this matter? She said "its required before I can give you cash" and happens when one updates their ID. I had recently renewed my CA Real ID. (It was not an unusual amount of cash; just bigger than the ATM limit.)
I give her a previous job title, out of lack of sufficient brain cells to say ballerina or something. (Something classy, something White.)
WTF? Hard to think anything other than some police state shit for the probably-near future. I mean seriously WTF, who has more and up to date dossier on citizens than a fucking bank?

Thank you for this thread. I'm in LA. Yeah, we've all been doing these standardized protests for decades and few of them have been effective. They're too ritualized and the cops just respond with far more resources than anyone could ever counter.
We need to look askance, as Harry Hay put it. I don't know anyone here in LA doing anything really at all and it's very frustrating. Something more effective, far more local and organic and supporting our neighbors.
And the Internet is simply not to be trusted. I don't know where to start.
