Just received one of those phone calls that makes me both sad and angry. A long-time client is migrating their resources to the "cloud" because "internal infrastructure (leased from a provider, not in their offices) is no longer sustainable." They believe they can solve all issues of updates, security, and implementation by outsourcing everything to closed services, cloud, or SaaS, and reducing investment in personnel. A few interns, cloud or SaaS services, and business is "worry-free."
I warned them to keep an off-site copy of their data, have a disaster recovery plan ready, and remember that their clients tend to cause damage and delete data, and their developers tend to break websites during updates. But all of this is underestimated because "the cloud is the solution."
Unfortunately, they've been swayed by the enticing advertisements from companies that promise everything without worries. Sadly, I know they'll get hurt, and it makes me sad, but there's not much I can do at this point.

A few times, in my life, I've experienced moments of complete well-being. It's hard to explain, but it's like mind and body live a moment of total and complete peace and harmony. As if all thoughts suddenly disappear, and the body becomes something ethereal. This only lasts a few seconds, but it's so intense and engaging that it leaves an impression on my mood for days.
After a long time, for a few moments today, I felt this sensation, this emotion, this well-being. In the meantime, there was this song playing. I've always liked it, but from today it will evoke the memory of that moment. A memory I will carry with me for life.

Day's satisfaction: For some time now, I've been setting up VPS for clients based on FreeBSD and divided into jails for hosting various services. A while ago, a client installed two WordPress sites: one on one of these VPS and another on his Linux VPS. I haven't heard from him in a while. This morning, he sent me a message: "Hi, unfortunately, an outdated WordPress plugin allowed someone to break in and insert malicious content into my two VPS. The significant difference is that the Linux VPS started mining cryptocurrencies, generating traffic, and sending emails, while the FreeBSD VPS did absolutely nothing. I found the malicious content, but, of course, it didn't work. Thanks!"
Sometimes not being the most popular platform on the web has its advantages!

Experts in OmniOS, SmartOS, IllumOS, and Solaris, I have a question: I have an OmniOS VPS with several zones, obviously in their ZFS datasets. I'm simulating an emergency restore on another equivalent VPS, just as I do with all my backups. I created a live snapshot of my zone (without halting and detaching) and I'm copying it to the other VPS with a command similar to:
zfs send -vcR rpool/zones/nginx@toMove01 | ssh root@myIP "zfs receive -F rpool/zones/nginx"
The copy completes successfully. At that point, on the destination VPS, I run:
zonecfg -z nginx -f nginx.cfg
The content of nginx.cfg is:
create -b
set zonepath=/zones/nginx

Running the install command will create different datasets.

No, I don't think so. The problem is that those kinds of protections should be before your router. But those attacks can be quite expensive as those botnets' time is sold on black markets - so they're usually short, unless they have a big interest in interrupting your service.

This morning, I participated in numerous calls. In one of them, we were defining the new infrastructure for an e-commerce site. It doesn't require extreme HA or extreme scalability, but the ability to grow eventually. On the call, there were myself, the e-commerce owner, and another sysadmin (who handles other tasks but wanted to join).
I proposed my usual standard solution: a FreeBSD server divided into jails with various services, separate datasets for the database files and website files, etc. My colleague jumped in, saying, "Well, why not Kubernetes on Linux?" I explained that, for this type of setup, in my opinion, Kubernetes is superfluous and that, for many reasons, FreeBSD could be a better choice.
He started a whole discussion about how the BSDs are dead, that Linux is everywhere now, and that it's necessary to use it for this type of system too.
I emphasized that a plurality of choices can only be positive, but to no avail.
In the end, the client (who has some technical knowledge, but I didn't expect that much), to my great surprise, ruled: "You're talking to me about Kubernetes, and I want a simple structure. You're talking about Linux; I want FreeBSD. I don't want the latest startup toy; I want what has worked for many years. And it works well."
Although I don't fully agree with his statement (Kubernetes is, in my opinion, an incredibly powerful tool, not the latest startup toy), his lucidity earned him a 30% discount on his hosting cost 😄

One of the most fundamental yet little-known features of FreeBSD is its ability to be used in read-only mode very easily. By installing the system on a UFS file system, you just need to modify the fstab file, change "rw" to "ro," and reboot. On the next boot, the system will automatically create mount points in RAM for the main directories (/tmp, log, etc.), and it will run perfectly.
This was the main reason why, many years ago, I chose FreeBSD for almost all my embedded systems. Even today, on my Raspberry Pies, I keep the SD cards in read-only mode and use external storage in read-write mode. This ensures that, in case of an unexpected poweroff, the system will come back up, and there will be no wear on the memory card.

Last night I was feeling down, but I knew it would be temporary.
This morning I woke up remembering how, many years ago, I was bullied, penalized, and mocked because I didn't want to use the "mainstream" systems (Windows - I'll write more about this some future posts).
"Because everyone does it" has never worked for me and will continue not to. I always believe that every problem needs its own solution; there is no "one size fits all" magic. I never exclude anything, and I avoid fanaticism, but I will continue on my path, as I always have.
One of my characteristics, since I was a child, has always been this. I listen to everyone, respect everyone, but I make my own decisions and take the responsibility.
Like the great Mama Cass said, "Make your own kind of music" is my motto.

It was said that it wasn't a seismic zone, so I thought it was just the tail end of a distant quake. I looked for information on my phone but found nothing. At 4:03 in the morning, I woke up to a strong quake. I heard objects falling and glass breaking (which I later found out were from my neighbor's house), everything was shaking, and suddenly, I started hearing the sounds of buildings collapsing. I was 10 km from the epicenter but only found out hours later. I immediately turned on the light, but the power went out. When the power came back, all phone lines were down, but my trusty 1mbit/sec ADSL was working. I was alone at home. I went outside and, having experience with earthquakes, urged my neighbors (still in disbelief) to run to the end of the street, to a parking lot away from all buildings. Roof tiles could fall. Strong aftershocks followed in the minutes after. They would continue for months, and occasionally, you can still feel them.
There were many collapses in the area. Together with a neighbor (a surveyor), we inspected the building and found no visible problems. It was a recent building, only a few years old. I went back inside to have breakfast around 5, much to the surprise of my neighbors who were urging me to leave. I turned on TV and news were still uncertain. They were just talking about a very strong earthquake in the norther part of Bologna). There were strong tremors all day long. It was a strange day. My friends wanted me to go to their place, far away. I decided to stay. My neighbors wanted me to go with them to the shopping center parking lot to sleep in the car. I stayed home. Some neighbors slept in tents in their gardens for months out of fear. That night, I just slept dressed on the couch.
There are many other details of that day that will stay in my mind forever.

I've decided it's time to push forward with BSD Mail. I won't have time soon to set up e-commerce, automated payments, etc., so I'll launch a website where I'll explain services and technical details, prices (which I still need to define), and we'll manage things manually for now.
I don't expect overwhelming numbers, so the rest will come later.
Ultimately, what matters is making everything work well.

Many years ago, I was stuck in a job where I was exploited by my employer—the only one I had ever had. Gabriele, who attended one of my Linux courses about 20 years ago, saw my potential and offered me life-changing advice: 'You have a passion for what you do. Don't waste your time on someone who uses it only for their own profit. Start your own business, I'll help by introducing you to some of my clients, and we can offer the Open Source solutions that excite you so much. You're young enough to try.' I took the leap. It wasn't easy, but ultimately, I succeeded in doing the work I love and choosing the technical solutions I prefer. I'm not a great salesman and often charge too little, feeling almost guilty for asking people to pay for something I enjoy so much. But tonight, I want to say thank you to Gabriele. Hello everyone! I wanted to share some exciting updates about the development of BSD Mail, our privacy-focused email service designed with robustness, security, and transparency in mind. Here’s a deep dive into the technical choices I've made, focusing on my use of open source solutions and open protocols:
🌍 **Servers & Location**
- We're running on two physical servers:
- One hosted by OVH in France
- Another by Hetzner in Germany
- Both servers operate on FreeBSD with NVMe drives in a ZFS mirror configuration for speed and data integrity.
🔒 **Virtualization & Security**
- We utilize jails on both servers to ensure isolated environments for different services, managed via BastilleBSD. On one server, jails are set up directly on the hardware, whereas the other server employs nested jails.
- Each server hosts a bhyve VM running OpenBSD with OpenSMTPD for handling SMTP duties securely.
🔗 **Networking**
- A Wireguard setup connects the two servers, facilitating routing capabilities so that jails and VMs can communicate seamlessly, supporting both IPv4 and IPv6.
📧 **Email Services**
- **Dovecot** is configured for maildir replication across the servers using Dovecot sync, ensuring email availability and redundancy.
- **Rspamd** instances are tied to local KeyDB jails, set up in master-master replication for consistent and reliable spam detection and greylisting.
- **ClamAV** runs in corresponding jails for virus scanning, maintaining a high level of security.
- **SOGo** provides a web interface for email management, connected to MySQL databases in master-master replication to handle sessions and authentication smoothly.
💾 **Data Management**
- Email data is stored on separate, encrypted ZFS datasets to secure emails at rest.
- MySQL databases are used for storing credentials and managing sessions for SOGo, also in a master-master replication setup. Importantly, all passwords are securely hashed using bcrypt, ensuring they are salted and safe.
🔎 **Monitoring & Reliability**
- Our DNS is managed through BunnyNet, which continuously monitors our server status. Should one server—or a specific service—become unavailable, DNS configurations are dynamically adjusted to avoid directing users to the affected IP until full service is restored.
🌐 **Commitment to Open Source and Open Protocols**
- Every component of BSD Mail is built exclusively using open source software and open protocols. This commitment is crucial for ensuring data freedom and the reliability of the solutions we use.

"How it all began"
I saw an ad for this CD set at a very low price in a computer magazine. I decided to give it a try, enticed by the low cost and this 'alternative solution to Windows', and in late 1996 I ordered this set.
When it arrived, I was fascinated (having never used a Unix or Unix-like system before) but a bit daunted by the lack of support for the main applications I knew. A few months later, though, I decided to give it another go and from that point, I never looked back. Whether it was Linux, one of the BSDs, or something similar (but Unix or Unix-like), I was not going back to systems like Windows.
My #ThrowbackThursday today is probably one of the most significant in my computing life.
