Hm. Not convinced. Perhaps if their work was focused on distant past, but I wouldn’t exclude them entirely.
The Encyclopedia of Global Archaeology states „Archaeologists may study the recent (historical) or distant past and are interested in a diverse range of questions: living conditions, how humans organized their social groupings, a interacted with and/or exploited the environment, diet, health status, trade patterns, burial choices to name a few.“

There’s a page on here that posts pictures of these with short contextual blurbs under the umbrella of „archaeo-history“. I think it’s pretty clearly these objects have historical context, but are they archaeological?
Springer and Encyclopedia Brittanica both include examination of recent (historical) items in archaeology.

How is a post on the internet „material remains“, though?
That account posts pictures of material objects from the past and short blurbs about their historical context. I think the youngest objects were from the 90s or so. That all fits the definition.
I’m wondering how you come to the conclusion what they post doesn’t fit into the context of Archaeology/History?
How is a foto from 1942 showing German soldiers smoking a cigarette with a Dutch soldier not relevant?

I get that it isn’t simulationist, but I’d sort of hoped it would enable „cinematic, heroic battles“. Doesn’t really sound like it. Sounds kind of broken.

SotS is on my pile of joy, but I haven’t read it yet. I‘ve got the core rules and „Brought to Light“, but don’t think there’s anything else available atm. A solid campaign would be a nice addition.
Your assessment of the expanded mechanics shoehorning combat into gumshoe as „silly“ makes me want to try it, tbh. I hope to try a one-shot next year.

Agree on Mistborn. Didn’t interest me enough to continue reading anything else by him. I actually quite enjoyed the Rothfuss books, but he’s as annoying as that Martin guy, insofar as it takes him ages to finish the next book and he appears to constantly get sidetracked by doing tons of other stuff.
I’ve never heard of those other people.
I think the last great fantasy trilogy I read was by jemisin. But I don’t read much fantasy anymore these days.

This has largely been my experience as well.
Also, a lot of the hype around what is referred to as ai pretty much boils down to marketing. It feels like every algorithm and Perl-Script is now being sold as “AI”.
A lot of decision makers also appear not to be technically inclined and lack understanding. It’s like a buzz word, the new thing everyone feels they need to participate in without knowing what it is, what it does, how it does it, or considering if it makes sense to use.

Incidentally, I read your review of Vaesen on your blog. I’m no history buff, but I also stumbled across inconsistencies and was wondering how accurate it is. Didn’t get that with Mythic Isles. The issue with the scenario intros and letters was one I also noticed. Your review is spot on and Vaesen is fun.
To be fair, the game does say, that it isn’t an accurate representation of the era, nor does it attempt to be. So, I took it in that spirit, and I say this during session zero.

My Girlfriend’s son wanted this like year before last, either for his birthday or Christmas. I can’t recall. Anyway, as I understand it, it has no setting per se, because it’s kind of universally adaptable to different genres. It’s a highly epic collaborative storytelling game, with the characters working along the edge of ultimate sacrifice. The point of the game is to tell the Story of an epic ending of your characters, the point when they sacrifice everything for what they love.

We went to a friend’s house for nye, and, although I don’t feel we have much to celebrate or look forward to in 2025, I became acutely aware of something I do cherish deeply.
It’s evenings spent with friends, in good conversation, playing games and eating good food, and/or just enjoying one another’s company. It’s my circle of friends and family. I’m fortunate to have that, and I’m incredibly grateful for that.
I’m also grateful, that the fediverse exists and has let that circle expand. 🫶

Assam CTC granulate is pretty straight forward, getting down to business tea. Seems like a good fit from what I gather on here.
I personally enjoy trying different varieties and exploring the nuances of taste offered by different varieties and regions. It’s a bit of a journey. I also enjoy learning about and experiencing how different cultures enjoy drinking tea.

Assam is wonderful. My colleague from Iran encouraged me to try Assam after he learned I’m a tea drinker. Germans tend to go for Darjeeling. I’ve grown to appreciate Assam, though. May I ask which one you’ve got?
I’m currently stuck on this Persian variety, that I found at my tea shop in Fürth. It’s nice and smooth with a strong malty note.
I gave Hamid a pack as a gift and he gave me sugar sticks with saffron, so I could enjoy the tea Persian style.

Das Problem für die ganzen Ampel-Hasser wird sein, dass sie erst begreifen wie viel schlimmer die Alternative gewesen wäre, nachdem sie Merz, Lindner oder Weidel gewählt haben.

It’s more along the lines of rich people enabling authoritarianism for their personal gain.
Look at Germany in the 20s and 30s. Russian oligarchs in the 2000s. Same thing. History repeating.
Ironically, it’s never worked out for them. Apparently, it’s hubris, like thinking „the leopard won’t eat my face“.

I think @npub1se3…u7rt was saying good things about Swords of the Serpentine a while back, iirc. He’s recently noted that he’s a big fan of Pelgrane.
I got the QuickStart for Swords a while back. I’ll take a look at it. What did you guys enjoy the most, and did you encounter any issues or possible pitfalls in the mechanics?

The first version. I have it in English, but not all of my players have decent English language skills. Will probably go for the 2nd edition in English as it’s apparently compatible.

I think so, but that’s not really the issue. I use the English translations. I just need the German version for some of my players who aren’t that stable in English.

I’m hopefully getting the German translation of the current iteration of Drakar och Demoner soon. I have no idea how the current version compares to the 1985 version, but I’m really looking forward to giving it a spin.

Wir haben gestern Abend einen von zwei Metaltischen mit Rollen zusammengebaut. Das war ein überschaubares Vergnügen bei der Hitze. Das Shirt konnte man auswringen danach.
Unsere Swords and Wizardry Runde ins #Barrowmaze läuft weiterhin ganz gut. Wir spielen jetzt mittwochs. Inzwischen sind alle Stufe 2., und bis jetzt gab es auch nur einen Helden der es auf den Heldenfriedhof geschafft hat. Gestern war es dann noch mal echt brenzlig, als die Gruppe sich vier Schatten gegenüber sah…
