The @npub1m96…ag4y will soon present “a combination of funding and policy measures” to support European open source projects in becoming commercially viable alternatives to proprietary US tech.

Don’t make predictions about what AI will be able to do next year based on what tech CEOs say, a group of scientists has told @npub1m96…ag4y President Ursula von der Leyen.

Tired of years-long debates about whether European administrations are too dependent on US software? Have a read about a German state busy at work replacing Microsoft Office with open alternatives.

The @npub1m96…ag4y is apparently working on a response to @npub1gx0…4u5c, a citizen initiative that wants to force video game developers to keep their games playable.
The problem: It’s a non-binding legal act, just a step up from a press release. Supporters of the initiative, like [@echo_pbreyer](https://digitalcourage.social/@echo_pbreyer ), are not happy.

In the last few months, many people have called on the EU to start supporting open alternatives to US-owned social media sites. The thing is: The EU has been doing that for some time already. It has financed, among others, ActivityPub, Mastodon and PeerTube. For [@netzpolitik_feed](https://chaos.social/@netzpolitik_feed ), we spoke to Michiel Leenaars, who professionally gives out buckets of EU cash to open source projects.

…where we might also tackle the question of whether #streaming should continue to be exempted from the ban. The industry fears for its revenues, but consumers obviously hate not being able to watch their favourite series when they leave their home countries.

So, what to do? The auditors propose an EU-wide enforcement mechanism, and the Commission seems to like that idea. It might happen sooner than later: The geoblocking regulation is up for revision in just two months.

The problem is also pretty clear: It’s on the member states to enforce this law, and they don’t do enough. In five years, the responsible authorities went after a merchant together once and that merchant still hasn’t fixed one of the problems they identified.

The law is pretty clear: If you sell something online in the EU, you have to make it available to everyone in the EU. There are some exceptions, for example physical goods if you don’t deliver to a certain country, and intellectual property like movies and series. More on that later.

The European Court of Auditors published an interesting report on #geoblocking in the #EU yesterday. The EU is supposed to have a common market, where goods, services and money flow freely – but this report shows that in the digital world, that often isn’t the case.

The #EU Commission has a long, long list of digital projects. I took a good look at what’s supposed to come in the next weeks – and which projects might still take a bit longer.
In January and February, we will probably see a European Action Plan to improve the #cybersecurity of hospitals and healthcare providers as well as recommendations on how to deal with challenges in e-commerce.

And the adventure continues: Belgium has cancelled today's vote on the chat control proposal because it did not think it could achieve a majority. With that, the Council Presidency passes to Hungary, who will have to cobble together a proposal after July 1.
