My first impression immediately after updating was:
1. It is slow, but to be fair, probably was converting some database in the background, because the subsequent loading it was actually faster than the previous version
2. The dark theme is gorgeous: very true, and very beautiful and eye friendly, except for one caveat: it also forces the PDFs to be inverted. I prefer to read papers in their true color and the UI be dark. I believe it is called "twilight theme" in KDE land.

The thing is I am drafting and prototyping. There is zero need for readability and I just want to be able to make sure the idea works first. Writing a function would be an overkill as I'm going to throw away the code when I'm done with the proof of concept. The sapply works, but it is no different than creating a function because ultimately I have to create a lambda inside it too. So actually for me it makes sense to be able to pipe to a for loop and use the base pipe placeholder.

As far as I can understand an update process, which is a very limited understanding, any software update has three parts:
1. Download
2. Install
3. Post-install tasks
And as far as I can tell in Emacs update, the time-consuming part are 1 and to some extent 2. The part you are concerned about is the 3rd step.
These said and back to my limited understanding, how come linux can handle on-the-fly update then? It then can wait for the reboot to load new things.

It is red flag because he is bringing in some clearly false statements for justification. Something that is super easy to prove wrong. If we want to convince people to get behind FLOSS we should stop painting a false image. That's why it is a red flag. That's all.

I have a Microsoft email from back when Gmail wasn't a thing, but I don't use it unless I have to use Skype or Teams. Anyways, after receiving some warnings from Microsoft for couple of days, I logged into my account to see the situation. It is surprising to see that someone(s) have been desperately trying hard to log into my account.
P.s: two days back I logged in form my phone but the UI was not good, I logged out so that later I use a computer to login and see the situation.

Your post got me thinking, why not use chocolate 🍫 in 3D printer (of course I don't mean feeding chocolate into a normal 3D printer, but a special machine). Chocolate also melts with heat, and solidifies when it cool down. It also stick to near-by solid chocolate when it is in liquid form.🤓

Regardless of how we look at it, the question was about "operating system", and there is a reason why Debian, Arch, Fedora, Solus, Alpine, OpenMandriva, Gentoo, Slackware, ... are all "Linux distributions". Because they all use the Linux kernel to communicate with the hardware. By definition:

That's true, although I should say that in my university we have both #Zoom and #Teams premium/enterprise license. Teams sucks the most in quality, speed, load on client, and being cross-platform (Teams recently dropped support for Linux). So some colleagues and I have been using #Jitsi for video call and #Matrix for work chat, and we have had much smoother experience and less lag in our local or international calls.

I have also tried roasted #chicory as a substitute for #coffee. It tastes "similar" to coffee, does not need emulsifier (unlike cocoa) and gets spread evenly in milk (vegan or non-vegan). I think it worth the try. I drink it during weekend when I don't need to have my geek-mode enabled 😬

generally, I'm extremely hesitant to add dependencies to my code/analysis, and I would rather code it or go for uglier and less convenient plot if possible to reduce this dependency three. For this reason I'm strongly against the mal-practice of `library("tidyverse")`. That said, there are some packages that I use very frequently due to robustness and convenience. {glue}, {dplyr}, and {cli} are among those in addition to {varhandle} (shameless self-promotion😅 )

I think that design is partially adopted from other IDEs at the time like eclips. many other tools these days have the same style including spyder, pycharm, matlab, vscode, zed.
I'm not a fan of this and I would like to have the repl on the side, and the way I have circumvented this is by having my code detached in Rstudio and put the code in one monitor and the rest of the IDE in another monitor.

Tbh I prefer the taste of black coffee. I have some infusion tea but I don't get the, for the lack of better term, "coding kick" from those. Coffee put me in "the zone" somehow.

The worst thing about decaf coffee is it being decaf. I'm trying to reduce my caffeine consumption, and have switch to decaf, but boy oh boy I get super drowsy after a cup of warm decaf. The drowsiness wears off after about 20mins of finishing the coffee and then I'm back to "normal".
Can this coffee be spiked with some sleeping agent? 😅

Although it will look more "clean", esp. because it is a completely different language, the C code is still a part that actually does the weightlifting (logically, otherwise would have been written in R). Yes, these are prefixes I use in my analysis unless there is a need for other type of naming scheme.

One thing that #KDE devs should seriously consider is an easy-to-use way to backup KDE settings/configs (Plasma + KDE apps). Unless it is in mentioned in their contract as part of their job (e.g. review 20 journal articles per year) the same way as teaching is. The argument is super simple: have they accepted such terms? If they have, then they have to do it. At the moment I don't know anyone having such term in their contract, so they should be paid. Reviewing a paper is a hard work, especially because the reviewer should make sure the numbers adds up, and the results are valid.

I strongly believe that if the work is not charity work, then the one who is doing the work should be fairly compensated. In current academic world, journals are getting paid a lot only for practically hosting PDF files and generating DOI, where as the researcher, the peer reviewers, and the editors are doing the actual work of progressing the science. The only question left is "how much is fair".

As a general note: on a rolling release or immutable distro, I understand if the /home is not on a separate partition, but for point-release distros (Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, Alma, OpenSuse Leap, ...) the upgrading process is a major change and there is a good chance of breaking things. And inexperienced Linux users most probably cannot recover from such breakage. That's why having /home separately is such a handy practice imho.

The partition encryption was one of the attractions of Linux for them. Also, they had a fear of updating and losing their files. So I suggested separate /home for an additional layer of protection.
I do understand that you are trying to suggest some approach that works, but my toot is more about #Fedora rolling out relatively untested and unstable installer. When such issues happens on VM, god know how it would behave on baremetal.

Thanks for your comment, but nope, this is something that I cannot accept even one bit. The VM is qemu and works flawlessly with all distros I have tried (around 20). Also the damn installer crashes, not the OS. It crashes and I have to double click on the app icon to open it from the live disk. The only time I can accept suspecting VM is when:
1. More than one installer fail
2. The whole live disk gets unresponsive or crashes.

At first I thought of filing a bug report, then after few more issues I thought of recording a video and make a tutorial out of it for new-to-Linux users, but ultimately it was so unstable and buggy that I got to the conclusion that it (i.e improvement in Fedora Gnome installation) is not even worthy of my time anymore.
I have been a fan of Fedora, but this experience have truly been hurtful. I cannot comprehend how this installer passed any quality checks.

I don't think they will touch Linux anytime soon due to this experience. The experience was that horrible. Crashing left and right, lack of a unified way to go back a step, lack of clear steps (everything opens in the same window and there is no breadcrumbs).
I always installed Fedora from my perspective, but this was the fist time I was installing from a newbie perspective, and quite frankly, it sucked.

I was helping a friend to convert to Linux and use #Fedora . We downloaded the Gnome Fedora 40 and to show them I created a virtual machine to go through the installation. The installer crashed so many times while creating custom partitions that they gave up. Also some parts in the installer are one-way road and there is no way to go back (e.g custom partition and advanced partition).
I genuinely didn't expect this much trouble from Fedora!

I was wondering what are the mains differences between Common Lisp and Scheme from syntactical perspective. Surprisingly enough, I found this short and right-to-the-point comparison on Scheme website:

نه اصلاعی ندارم، و توی اروپا تا جایی که میدونم امکان اجبار کردن چنین مواردی نیست، مگر چیزی مثل Chat Control تصویب بشه. یه سری مسایل غیر قانونی هست، مثل نشر مطالب کپیرایت دار یا فاشیستی یا پدوفیلیا و ... ولی تاجایی که میدونم مورد به مورد باهاش برخورد میشه و نه در سطح پلتفورم. از اونطرف هم کسایی مثل رییس مجلس فنلاند کاملا شفاف نژادپرست هستن و توی وبلاگاشونم هست و کسی نتونسته مجبورشون کنه اون مقاله ها رو حذف کنن.
البته دخالت کردن در انتخابات هم طبیعتاً ممونعه

فهمیدن یه مقاله ممکنه یک یا دو روز کار ببره، برای همین مرحله ۵ مهمه.
دوتا پیشنهاد خیییلی بزرگ هم دارم:
۱. از Zotero استفاده کنین و مقاله ها رو ذخیره کنین توش. میتونین توش برای هر مقاله یادداشت هم بنویسین، میتونین دسته بندی کنین، میتونین PDF مقاله رو هم اونجا اضافه کنین. افزونه ی مرورگر داره که عالی کار میکنه.

۴. بعد از خوندن Abstract برین سراغ توضیحات (caption) تصاویر و به ترتیب بخونین. لازم نیست ۱۰۰٪ متن رو متوجه بشین، همین که ببینین اعداد ارقام از کجا میاد و نمودارا به چه شکلیه و تا چه حدی ۲.الف ۲.ب و ۲.ج رو ساپورت میکنه خوبه.
۵. الان وقت تصمیم گیریه. آیا این مقاله جذابه و ارزش وقت بیشتر رو داره؟ اگه نداره که ببندین بره. اگه داره برین مورد ۶
۶. پیشنهاد میکنم از قسمت Results شروع کنین، بعد introduction بعد materials and methods بعد دوباره results و در آخر discussion.

I'm determined to do two things today:
1. Put a small web app project on a git forge. It is cheatsheet for HUD menu is Linux applications. The main work is done and I believe there are more UI savvy folks in FLOSS to improve the UI.
2. Continue working on a python project which is about converting YouTube news into podcast feed
Let's see how far I can go. No R today which is a little bit sad, but I'll compensate another day 😅

I installed it on my work machine to give it a real try with proper workload, but the first thing that hit me was: how to open a single file without opening workspace. I wanted to open my .zshrc and I miserably failed. Nothing in their documentation about this though. Pressing Ctrl+o expects to get a folder and does not open a file. What am I missing?

I use hyphen in elisp and scheme and sometimes out of habit I use it in R too and then I get that error about subtracting the strings 😅
So here is my answer to your initial question: I use dot to separate connected stuff (e.g `training.set|). I use _ for separating concepts (e.g `training.set_normalized`), and I use double _ for separating major things (e.g `gbm.fit__training.set_normalized`)

Yes, I installed that, but that is an old version. Checkout the repology:

Thanks. I was expecting this info to be in the About page. It didn't occur to me to look among the FAQs. It also seems that their FAQ page is a bit out of date. They have mentioned "As of now, we only support macOS" under the "What platforms does Zed support".

Does anyone know what is the source of revenue of the #ZedEditor ? They have a fully fledged editor that supports CRDT too, it is written in Rust, they claim in is fast and that "every pixel must carry its weight". All good a noble. Their software is under GPLv3, Apache, and AGPL. They are have an open position to hire more Rust dev.
This begs the question: What is their source of revenue? Where is the cash flow?

I wish it was also available as Flatpak or AppImage (or ideally both). currently even the AUR is not at the latest version and the "suggested" installation on their website is through piping a curl to sh, although it is relatively straightforward shell script to handle mac or linux and bash or zsh.

Actually Github is the perfect place for that. I work on the projects on GitHub or Gitlab, and when the project is good to be released, I migrate them to @npub1fh7…ee83 . This way the burden in on a corporation like Microsoft with all incremental pushes, and when a project is release ready (or ready for public), a fully OpenSourced platform will host it.🤓

منبع از اینکه چنین کتابی با اون تفاسیری که شما گفتی توی بازار آنلاین بریتانیا برای اون گروه سنی وجود داره. من بازم اصرار میکنم که بحث دولت به اون قسمت از بازی باکلمات برمیگرده. منبع ربطی به اون نداره، به خود اصل کتاب برای اون گروه سنی ربط داره. درنتیجه من نگفتم دروغ میگی، گفتم:

ایران کشور پهناوریه و هم مراوردات زمینی و هم دریایی داشته (الانم هوایی اضافه شده). ایران توی مسیر راه ابریشم بوده، موقعیتش خیلی استراتژیک بوده و رفت و آمد توش زیاد بوده‌. به همین دلیل کمتر بیماری قدیمی ای هست که توی ایران نیومده باشه. عملا ما ۴سالِ لیسانس رو در مورد بیماری های ایران خوندیم (باکتری، ویروس، قارچ، انگل، پریون،...) و بازم زمان کم اومد.
خیلی بیماریا هست که پاش به اخبار نمیرسه چون خیلی به موقع و سریع کنترل میشه و از آندمی یا پاندمیش جلوگیری میشه. 🤓

سالهاست جذام توی ایران هست. سال۱۳۹۰ یادمه توی رشت یه مورد دو مثبت پیدا شد توسط همکلاسی قدیم من. یه مادربزرگی بود که خودش دو مثبت بود و دوتا نوه هاش هم زخم های مشکوک داشتن. از زمان شاه هم قرنطینه ی مخصوص جذام داشتیم که اگر اشتباه نکنم حوالی جنوب شرق تهران بود.
این که صداش در نمیاد دلیل بر این نیست که وجود نداره. من رشتم میکروبیولوژی بود و خیلی آندمی و پاندمی رو توی همون سالها از داشتیم بدون اینکه توی اخبار چیزی گفته بشه. از سل و حصبه و وبا که هر از گاهی یه گوشه ایران میاد بالا تا جذام.

I'm extremely noob in music theory, but perhaps circle of fifths can give you a good start:

Also when you are using a scale, and selecting randomly, make sure the notes that are adjacent are one full note apart. For example in C major, {C, E, G}. I don't remember who said this, but the idea was to have an easy start for coming up with solo riffs.

I didn't know that the #readline (which many CLI tools use these days) and #bash projects are maintained by one single person named Chet Ramey. I always naively thought they are either maintained by one of these mega corps or by GNU folks collectively.

Btw, most of the readline keybindings are similar in Emacs, but as a tip, if you want to know what a keybinding does in Emacs, open Emacs vanilla (`emacs -Q`) then press Ctrl-h and then k. This will as for you to press a keybinding and will give you its definition.

خب پس اگر فرقی نمیکنه، پس کسایی که رای دادن خودشونو بد جور مسخره کردن و همزمان صد هزار میلیارد تومن از بودجه ی مملکت رو دود کردن. این وسط هم این بهونه رو دست دوستان دادن که اعدام و فیلترینگ و مذاکرات پشته پرده رو با توسل به همین آرا ببرن جلو.
قطعا رای دادن اگر لاعث اصلاح، پیشرفت و بهبود میشد، توی ۴۴ سال گذشته یه تکونی داده بود به شرایط. حداقل طبق آمار «رسمی» نه تنها اوضاع بهتر نشده، که مستقیم به قعر قهقرا داریم سقوط میکنیم.
باید واقع‌بین بود!

That might be true in election systems like India in which the blank ballot has legal meanings. In election systems like Iran not only that's not the case, but by participating in this election game, you have acknowledged the validity of the regime and health of the election. This is something that Iran supreme leader himself said in his speech some days back.

But why you are bot off the hook then? That's because your life also get affected my the subsequent down-stream of the election. The only difference is that you have voted against the election by not participating in it.

در کمال احترام، شمای نوعی که رای دادی از دید من قطعا مسئولیت داری، حالا پذیرفتنش یا نپذیرفتنش به انصاف خودتون بستگی داره. ولی من قطعا مسئول میبینم بخصوص افرادی که کاندید مورد نظرشون از صندوق بیرون اومد.
اون ماشین اگه موقع کنترل کردن شما یکی رو بکشه شما مسئولی (قتل غیر عمد). اگرم ماشینو بی دردسر متوقف کنی کف و سوت و تشویقش مال شماست.
رای دادن حق هر فرده و بحثی توش نیست، ولی پذیرفتن مسئولیتش هم بخشی از فراینده.

I keep that info because typically, at least in my case, these are repeating offenders and each website reveals one piece of the puzzle. I would need a better picture to know how to contact them and tell/make them to stop abusing my email address.
Ideally, all websites should not allow anyone to register with arbitrary email address without confirmation, but the reality is that they do.

This is what I do: I log in using Tor or VPN, change the password, collect as much info as I can from the account (full name, address, phone number, purchase/transaction history, secondary email, wishlist, ...) and then I close that account for good. I don't take these out of the account:
full credit card number, money, pictures/videos).
Afterall, they used **my** email, and my email can be used to reset the password, and therefore I'm eligible to admin that account. Fair game I'd say.
