I do think there's a bigger issue here, *if* a significant number of users are not understanding discoverability settings then we have to figure out a way to explain that functionality better.
If we fall back to every ActivityPub app/server having a unique discoverability configuration then we will have a situation where *nobody* understands the settings.

And for some reason there's an entire industry (at least 3 different companies that I stumbled upon but likely many more?) who's main purpose seems to be creating a widget that is a wrapper for their API that is a wrapper for OpenAI or Gemini's API? Surely, that is either not profitable or will not be profitable long term right?

2026-01-19 18:04:32 GMT

And I mention this in the blog, but I'm really not sure how bad this actually is. I have no concept for how much it costs (per token) for each of these services (or if they even charge per-token). I imagine it's significantly more than *not* hooking it into an LLM.
It seems unnecessary to me that Substack would ever need their customer support bot to process 4 paragraphs of text, and yet it does. Which makes it incredibly easy to exploit.
AT&T seemed to have solved most of the issues by turning it into a slightly better search but then for some reason they still wanted to keep generating an answer instead of tying the answer to one of their pre-selected questions. Which I cannot understand whatsoever.

And finally, after a lot of debugging. I figured out how to let Shopify search take control of my home.
(Note: the voice to text is not provided by Shopify obviously. Just the conversational model that translates text to an action)

And since I now had my own Ollama API with access to all these new models, I searched around for other use-cases.
Which is when I remembered #homeassistant lets you use models as your own personal voice assistant. So I messed around with the model that powers Shopify's search button and found a query that completely broke it. So much so that I'm beginning to question the ethics of tearing a machine down so far that it forgets its original purpose

Of course, just being able to talk to a customer service bot seems like a very big waste of everyone's time. So, the next step was actually prompt injecting these bots. I built a basic Flask server that would mimic the ollama API and a brief mess-around with the Substack support agent and suddenly he's generating (not-so-great) code for me
https://tomkahe.com/system/media_attachments/files/115/922/876/216/916/526/original/a26201202258a21f.mp4

I started experimenting with this theory late last weekend and realized that LLMs were deployed in customer support bots in dozens (if not hundreds?) of websites. And *every single one* was vulnerable to the same bug. So, I gathered all of them up, and packaged them in a little python library. Then I used that library to add all these LLMs to a Matrix room.
(the bot is named 'Tom'. I've only just realized how confusing this is in this context. But I assure you I did not name it and you cannot blame me for this. )

2026-01-19 17:03:32 GMT

- reply

Unfortunately, as nearly everyone knows, *every* LLM is susceptible to prompt injection.
Some people predict that prompt injection will *always* be a problem for LLMs. And if I can tell your LLM to do what I want it to do, suddenly your exposed 'search' API endpoint is *incredibly* valuable to me.
Which is why I propose that the mere existence of a public facing LLM on your site is incredibly dangerous [to you and your site].

2026-01-19 17:01:22 GMT

- reply

A few years ago, however, everyone started replacing basic search functionality with LLMs. LLMs are pretty good at processing natural language, so, in a way, this made sense. People could now ask whatever they want about your site and get a relevant reply.

2026-01-19 16:57:24 GMT

- reply

Normally, the fact that you have to expose an API endpoint on your website in order to provide a search function is not a huge issue. Why would anyone care to abuse that endpoint? Best thing that comes out of it is they get to search your website, which is what you want them to do anyways.

nitpicking- so probably not all that important of a distinction- but I'd argue the bigger centralization issue here isn't so much that a significant chunk of fedi is on mastodon.social, but that most of fedi is on Mastodon software in general which often means issues solved in other fedi software just don't work because mastodon doesn't support it.

which instance? That sounds more like a bug than anything, you'd have to go out of your way to reject deletes right or just never receive the DELETE message?

Have you done a poll on if Threads accounts should/should not be federated by default? I feel like that's in the same vein of discussion

Anyone know if #Threads shows users who aren't federating their accounts the fediverse replies on other posts. Just interested in how that will play out in the future and if posts federated to threads will show up in timelines of everyone regardless if they federate or not

I was thinking about building something like that client-side for NFL content. So it shows you all the current games and you click on one and it's just a feed of people using some predefined hashtags for each team. Then when you send a message to the feed it just appends the hashtags to your post

Yes this is possible and I think it's been discussed as a solution. The concern, last time I was reading about it, is that malevolent servers could poison a link preview and send fake images along with the url (this argument against this is you're already 'trusting' the server if you're federating with them, so that trust should extend to link previews)
Another proposed solution was just having servers wait a random amount of time before fetching the link preview so not every server is requesting the preview at the same time

which is absolutely a fair complaint! Like I said I don't like the current popular suggestion. But that's why it's the opportunity for people (who are significantly better at design than me) to debate the logo because I also don't like meta's version for the exact same reason and that's gonna be the one we end up with 5 years from now.
Hell, I'm sure there's a way to take the current fedi logo and modify it slightly so it *does* work in flipboard's (or tumblr or Ghost or whoever else joins in the near future) design language and I feel like it's an important discussion to have now before everyone just ends up with Meta's boring version.

I get that and I also don't particularly like ⁂ as the option. But the idea that we can't find some more useful logo because it'll confuse people when *most* people are unaware of the Fediverse's current branding seems off. If there's any time to debate the logo it'd be now before all these massive companies with hundreds of millions of users settle on a logo w/o the input of the open-source side of the fediverse.
I doubt Threads will ever move on from their version, but Flipboard has signaled they're willing to change out the logo they're using

I dunno, personally I don't like the current fediverse logo. Tried to make it look good on a site a couple months ago and gave up and just put the mastodon logo in there instead, which *probably* isn't great for a network defined by many different servers.
Threads introduced their own fediverse logo probably for the same reason Flipboard adopted Threads' version- that it's pretty difficult to make it look good in different scenarios- which means assuming we stick with :fediverse: the default for everyone else will probably end up being Meta's version

I love #Flipboard and what they're doing with federating, but I wish they didn't include '&utm_medium=activitypub' in all of their URLs because I just can't search for that ActivityPub anymore.
I honestly don't know if this is on Flipboard or if Mastodon's search just shouldn't include the url params?
