I think that the piece is rhetorically excellent, it just does not match the reality as I perceive it. you can use wrong tools to do the job in any language, and macros are prone to misuse, but that's it -- proficient lisp programmers either use trivial macros locally or codebase-wide macros that really make software less complex.

I've worked in a few big-ish commercial projects in common lisp and I can testify that applying standard team techniques (style guide, reviews, communication) none of such effects occur. the foss ecosystem is also not more fragmented than, say, python (although much smaller). and in the times of popularity many big projects were shipped. so I find no evidence of lisp curse (or lisp bipolar programmer) effect being anything inherent to lisp as a language. I can't comment on forth.

#lisp course is bollocks excuse invented by disillusioned novice lisp programmer, and it hunts the community for years because outside people bring it back :p

I'm considering switching my main development station to NetBSD; the laptop will probably stay as it is on Linux as framework laptops doesn't seem to be supported.
Did anyone recently switch from Linux to NetBSD? any surprising gotchas?

"Faulty Towers, vibe sickness, and the vibe bobsled" by @npub1urx…v0z4
Very thoughtful and insightful. I like the term "vibe bobsled :). The voting machine excerpt is especially persuasive.

using more McCLIM and ECL in software is all I'm for, but I think that this discussion is outside of my expertise, so anything I say would not carry any weight, sorry!
that said- org-mode is great, I'm using it daily :)

stop yelling. you don't need to agree with the idea to entertain a thought, and you don't need to agree unconditionally with everything in rethoric to appreciate the point being made.
work in a context of the surrounding environment, not in a context of economical growth, is deeply human and people without any purpose usually do disintegrate. writing a novel and working in a garden is also hard work to me - a rewarding one at that.
I'm a supporter of the idea of ubi and automating infrastructure, but I don't believe that leaving all means of economical activity in hands of a few greedy shareholders will lead to anything but a catastrophe.

I'm reading now "Computer power and human reason: from judgment to calculation" by Joseph Weizenbaum and it is absolutely fantastic.
It is as if the author teleported from today 60 years back, wrote ELIZA for plausible deniability that he is not, in fact, a time traveler, waited another 10 years and wrote a book about our current predicament.

you probably mean the metaclass thing by Ken Tilton; it is a bit different because it connects slots and propagates values.
In any case my excursion is about "how one would implement the last task from 7guis in McCLIM", so it is more concerned with visuals.
And it pays of, I've already found a few issues in McCLIM that I've fixed along the way :) with more to come

2026-01-20 19:47:51 GMT

One more, this time with formula editor and some computation, but no propagation yet.

If I had to pick a new phone today, I'd consider (in no particular order) lineage,
grapheneos, jolla and pinephone[*], and after educating myself further I'd make a choice that best suits me.
[*] I know that it is a device with some compatible distributions, not OS itself

I don't mind e/os, but the phone was not bought by me nor it has unlocked bootloader, nor I want to install to my aunt something she clearly wouldn't want to -- I've already got burned by installing Linux to my family members; constant support requests and breaking printers hunt me till today in my nightmares 🙂
Thanks for the advice though!

2025-12-15 20:07:38 GMT

I've been configuring a new android phone for my aunt and boy, it is horrific:
- tons of preinstalled applications including wtf games, linkedin, netflix, spyonme-soft, duplicate-this-stock-functionality-but-worse, spyonme-hard and much more
- more apps that can't be uninstalled yet are clearly spyware (xiaomi cloud? mimusic?) plus standard google spyware
- gemini this gemini that, "yes please" vs "ask me later", "make your phone your wallet" with "yes please" vs "ask me later" and much more (again!)
Then I proceed to install the only application of her choosing -- whatsapp, but whatever, so I open play store (there is also a mistore:) and type 'whatsapp'
The first result is a green icon similar to 'whatsapp's, I install it, but no! it is actually "telephone" with overreaching permissions that wants to replace the standard application for calling.
Only the second result is the application with the name that exactly matches the query. Apparently 'telephone' is sponsored, but it is only very subtly hinted.
I wouldn't call it a circus - it is an animal experiment facility.
