Does your campaign setting have a "central conflict" or similar theme? I'm not talking about inciting incidents or the kickoff to an arc or adventure, but rather a recurring motif of clashing forces. Some settings have them front and center (like Middle Earth or Birthright) and others are more mosaic, with no looming central crisis (like Forgotten Realms or Traveller's Third Imperium). I find it interesting how some people insist on a sense of "deep lore" before they feel immersed in a #ttrpg setting. After all, most people in reality don't exactly have a scholar's view of the world, and there's lots *we* don't even know about our reality. If we want a small gap between player and character knowledge, what does a 300 page setting detail guide then truly bring? Can we not play if we feel we have less than perfect knowledge of the world? #rpg #worldbuilding

Quick and dirty #worldbuilding trick: If starved of inspiration, take out a random ancient or medieval history book, pick a random page, pick a line or paragraph, and replace all proper names with stuff from your world. Sometimes you get nonsense, sometimes you get neat kernels. #ttrpg #rpg #fantasy #scifi

I think I’m mostly just fascinated with how even the SW-inspired stuff tends to take place in a distant future rather than “a long time ago in a galaxy far far away”. Most sci-fi settings insist on that connection to real time and space, however tenuous.

Aside from Star Wars, I'm hard-pressed to think of space opera gaming settings that have the same science fantasy "in a galaxy far, far away" sensibility. Things like Dragonstar, Starfinder etc. doesn't count due to their direct lineage to more traditional fantasy settings! But why aren't there more Star Wars-esque universes out there? #starwars #ttrpg #rpg #sciencefantasy #scifi
