I appreciate the comment about the book. And I promise it will be the best Sats you’ve ever spent.
I’m also glad you’re not against marketing. But my position is that, for every 10,000 we’ll build software products, only a couple really achieve scale - and that’s due to (in some cases luck, but) superior go to market.
Cold card is case in point. It’s far superior to Ledger. But ledger outsells it 500:1
Now..this is fine for a general product like that. But network live and die by the density.
It’s very easy to lose network density and to get anti-network effects if messaging and go to market unclear.
We can have the best product/protocol, but if people don’t know where it “lives” in their minds, it’s all for naught.
I recommend Andrew Chen’s work on Network effects btw. His book “the cold start problem” is absolutely fantastic

Yes it would’ve, because nobody would’ve know about it.
Had Silk Road and Wikileaks not existed, or Roger Ver, Voorhees or Antonopolous to evangelise in the early days - bitcoin would’ve disappeared.
The very fact that businesses sprouted up, people discussed it, and entire communities of evangelists emerged is what got bitcoin the attention it needed to develop economic mass.
There’s no way around effective marketing and messaging.

I used to think that too. But look at the behaviour. People pass around “numbers on a screen” which don’t really mean much. There’s no significant net bitcoin entering. It’s mainly the same amount of bitcoin just switching hands amongst the same people.
So what’s happening, if we’re being objective, is that people are treating zaps more and more like likes or other reactions.
We need to think about this further. It’s far from an economic model like mining

Builders actually have skin in the game. They’re invested in the success of both their business and the protocol.
And a ‘council’ is the best name I can come up with for an informal, unofficial kind of group of these businesses who try to workshop some of these ideas

That said, the specific idea I was referring to in the note above was for some sort of Nostr “builder’s council” where various Nostr businesses come to together & pool some money to fund some co-marketing initiatives that they may not be able to afford on their own, but could do together.

There’s nothing “weird” about it.
Decentralisation comes with clear drawbacks in the marketplace. Nostr may be superior technically, in almost EVERY way, but there is no coordinated communications effort.
I posted about this two weeks ago, and half the responses were: “oh you’re too bearish on Nostr” or “look at all the cool tech we’re building”.
And that’s precisely my point. The focus has ALL been on the tech (and rightly so). But my entire argument was that the gaze needs to begin to shift towards communications & go to market. There’s no point building the coolest car if nobody knows about it.
Unfortunately, I don’t know if the @npub10pe…n34f people agree with this (they seem to be the only org funding collective initiatives). They just ignored the post despite tagging them.
Either OpenSats needs to fund some marketing efforts, or these efforts ultimately come down to the businesses building on Nostr. The best option would be BOTH.
I have some other ideas. I’ll DM you and see what you think.
In the meantime, GOLDEN opportunities like this are being completely missed or just not taken advantage of. Nostr should’ve grown by a million users this week, not fucking Blue Sky.

I spoke about this last week.
The benefit of decentralisation comes with some drawbacks backs. Coordination around comms being one.
Anyway. I expect more of this shit to happen in the coming years; so we’ll have more chances.
Perhaps another approach is at the company/product level, not product. Much easier to have a message from Primal or Satlantis than it is from “Nostr”.
Extrapolating that out…The more companies / products we have building/built ON Nostr, the more they can go to market with a clear message (individually).
Each message appeals to different groups of people, but ultimately they each find their way to Nostr.

An overwhelmingly large percentage of the Brazilian population literally LIVE on WhatsApp and IG. I’m not just talking their friends, and scrolling. I mean this is how almost EVERY business runs. They don’t have websites down here. They build their entire digital presences on those two apps.
If Zuckerberg’s transformation is real (dunno if I’m convinced, but who knows - crazier things have happened) and he allows for the kind of content X allowed to spread in Brazil, this Alexandre monkey would be STUCK.
There’s no WAY he could shut access to that down, without the entire country stopping. Literally nothing would work.

This is a GREAT moment for Nostr, but we’ve still got a loooooong way to go before the network and the apps on it are robust.
In fact, similar to Wikileaks in the early days, we probably don’t want to draw too much attention right now to Nostr apps bc while the protocol itself is hard to censor, as was just seen, it’s very easy to censor an app.
Granted, it’s a bit like playing wackamole with Nostr, but once again, we’re not there yet. There probably needs to be 10x more *really good* apps, before we could even hope to sustain a forced shutdown in any country for that matter.

Last week I posted about "Nostr struggling" and while there were many good responses, it seems to me that a bunch of people misunderstood my premise.
I'm going to clear that up here and expand on the idea a little further.
First of all, I'm a Nostr bull. I'm sold, and I know how necessary this is. I'm still recruiting souls from twitter:

Secondly, I know that Nostr is SUPERIOR, technically speaking - and while the apps might not be as smooth, and some of the UX might be buggy, the substrate were working with is fundamentally better than the status quo.
@npub1wmr…g240 did a fantastic job of explaining that at the recent @npub1nst…rg5l conference (I suggest everyone watch that if they haven't - and I'm still bummed I couldn't make it).
There are so many NIPs, and so much tech shit going on, that nobody else stands a chance really. Elon might have cool AI, but we have @npub1l2v…ajft that can produce more prototypes than all the AIs in the world, combined.
That being said, my reference to "struggling" was not about the technical side of things. It was about messaging & go to market.
I speak to people every day about Nostr. I live in Brazil right now and travel on a regular basis to at least 10 countries each year. When I speak to people, they don't really care so much about censorship resistance, or Bitcoin (interestingly enough, two things Rabble also mentioned in his talk).
What they want is a place to connect, that's COOL.
And that's a VERY HARD thing to do.
@npub1sg6…f63m and the guys did it with Twitter early on, and so did the Instagram founders - but for every one "hit" - there are another 1000 well built flops which people just didn't find "cool."
Right now, the messaging is more doom, than bloom. More "you need this bc government gonna get you", and less "this is where the cool kids are at".
Now...I understand that this is gonna take time. All good things do. But if we're going to attract more people, the conversation needs to evolve.
I wrote a piece a little while back called "Social as a Service" and framed Nostr more as this substrate for a Universe of new applications. Once again, Rabble echoed this in his talk and leaned into the "Social Protocol" angle.
I personally find this more compelling. More white-pill, and more appealing for the purposes of growing a network. People need to be pulled, not pushed. The latter can work in bursts here and there (as we've seen this week since the Telegram debacle), but it's not sustainable growth.
@npub1a2c…w83a has been doing really good work with her framing, and I think her 80% bloom / 20% doom approach is a good one.

Thinking out aloud, maybe we just need more angles. I guess the Bitcoin people are still going to be attracted by "government gonna get you" - and we're FAR from saturation in that dimension. So maybe the right approach is the have that conversation with THEM...but a very different conversation with others.
Ultimately, I hope to see more go-to-market initiatives that are user-oriented, and get people excited about Nostr. We saw that at the Nostr booth @npub167n…zu3r that @npub18am…p424 kicked off, and that @npub1hz5…tysa is now working on.
We've got some plans for later this year at a few conferences as we unveil @npub15xd…t3l3
I know @npub1utx…50e8 and @fiatjaf are doing some podcast stuff, which is excellent. Also @npub1693…4j0c is doing a Nostr book.
I'm starting to repeat some of what I said last week, so I'll stop here.
Ultimately the point is this:
Nostr is not struggling "technically" speaking.
But it's not yet found a compelling enough SPACE in people's minds, outside of the Bitcoin community. And it's not found a narrative yet that's compelling, beyond the "government gonna get you / big tech gonna ban you".
When we find that, I expect things to really begin taking off.

Last year I spoke about the unlikely circumstances under which we met in Costa Rica. Me, an Australian nomad/scamdemic escapee, and you, a Dominican model & aspiring coach trying to set up her own little online business.
This year, I’d like to reflect for a moment on the past year and how things have changed, plus a lesson learnt.
We’ve now settled into a new country, established a long term routine and begun to build roots. We’ve both found our groove in the relationship. You, as the home-maker, house-wife, cleaner, chef, pilates pro and aspiring momma. Me, as the lunatic in the office, staring at the screen for hours, writing, building and yelling at people on the phone - trying to hustle his way into making a dent in the universe.
There’s a lot of trad-wife and trad-husband stuff on socials these days, and I expect most of it is fake. In fact, I know many people who show one side online while in reality it’s completely different. We decided to show nothing online about us (other than the odd anniversary poast like this) but actually live that life for real. For everyone reading, I recommend the latter approach: It’s healthier for the soul (although maybe less so for the bank account & follower count).
That being said - if there’s something I’ve learned from marriage - is that it’s not all smooth sailing. Like I said, women are crazy - and men have been trying to understand them since the dawn of time (with little to show for it).. And perhaps therein lies the problem. You don’t necessarily want to be understood, but instead want presence. This is often mentioned theoretically, but takes on a whole new meaning practically. If there’s something you’ve taught me about women (without a single word), it’s this. And it’s made me a better man. You can read all the books & tweets you want, but real life is where rubber meets the road. As Bruce Lee once said: “Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do.”
So thankyou for being my wifey, my little sidekick, my clown, my slow cooker, my personal chef, my gym buddy, my home-maker, my personal intuition-device, my little model, and all the other things you are and plan to be (including your 99 personalities).

I think that approach is infinitely more compelling than V4V.
I personally don’t think V4V scales. That’s why busking is not really a viable commercial strategy for 99% of the market.

Appreciate you laying it out.
But I don’t think what you laid out is a viable pathway to something large or significant.
If nostr is going to be some minor little network where a few people congregate to avoid ads and just chat to each other - sure. I see value in that.
But that won’t change the web or make any meaningful impact in the world.
The future is content creation, and that means more and more content creators and a larger and larger creator economy. (Yep…more influencers).
Sure - 80% of them are cringe, but 20% are excellent educators and there is loads to learn. (Maybe it’s 90/10, or 99/1 ).
The web is going to become the future of education. And that means content creators, selling stuff, and that also means ads.
Will Nostr play that game ?
Or will it remain small and fringe ?

But “competing against everyone” is a losing strategy.
Who / what are we competing against first? And this needs to be a relatively precise target.
And perhaps we need to change the paradigm a bit. Maybe it’s not Nostr that’s competing, but the businesses themselves?

And yes - perhaps these narratives need to be driven by products and businesses built on Nostr?
I’d hope at the very least though, that orgs like OpenSats, who have some sort of coordination power, can assist. That’s somewhat of an edge against the centralised competition if used right.
But comms is a very important next step. I think the tech is mature enough to move onto that as a focus now.

I’m going to write more about establish micro and atomic networks.
The way you build larger networks is by stringing together many small networks.
It requires quite a bit of coordination, which is harder with a decentralised protocol. @npub10pe…n34f is a great imitative trying to direct some resources in a more deliberate way.
That’s why I think they should be thinking about marketing grants next

I’ve noticed as much in your writing. Which is a big part of why it appeals to more than just Bitcoiners.
And yep - I’m also optimistic wrt roadmaps. Step 2 is we all have to execute on the roadmaps. But step 3 still remains: viable go to market approaches that are more & more compelling.
Of all the pillars of network growth, I think comms is still the weakest.
1. Tech is great.
2. Design, and there “Product” is catching up.
The areas of weakness:

4. operational excellence.

I think what you’re doing at comingle is an excellent example. Love the concept and the approach you’re taking.
The portable identity is IMO one of the killer features for sure. In fact, it’s what I most pitch when talking about Nostr to people (I never really discuss censorship resistance). But (a) I don’t think the narrative around that is being well enough articulated by us, and (b) it seems to be that people grasp that point intellectually, but then don’t have alot of real, functional Nostr products to use beyond X clones right now.
That being said, I know these things take time. So I’m not suggesting “oh we need to have more apps now or we’re dead”.
What I am suggesting though, is a move away from CR as a main selling point, bc I don’t think it’s that important, and doesn’t differentiate nostr enough from X. The blue sky example and traction helps validate this claim.

Why Nostr is struggling…
There is too much of an overlap with X, not only in the feature sets among the primary applications, but more importantly, in the kind of audience that Nostr is catering to.
Sure..censorship resistance at the protocol level is a differentiator, but the to the average person, you may as well be talking gibberish. They don’t know wtf a protocol is in the first place - let alone why it matters for censorship resistance to happen at that level, or more importantly, WHY they should trust Nostr to deliver on that promise. “Bcoz @npub1sg6…f63m said so” is not an argument.

I’ve been on there a few times, and the content quality is enough to make you want to throw up….but at the very least, it’s working for that kind of content, and for the people who want it.
I don’t have a direct answer here..but I think it’s something to do with the over-emphasis on technicals.
@npub1az9…m8y8 mentioned increasing the emphasis on design the other day. I agree this is a move in the right direction. We’re taking a very design-focused approach with @npub15xd…t3l3 (we’ll have ALOT more to show in the next 6wks).
That being said, it’s not enough.
IMO, Nostr is technically mature enough for us to go out there and talk about it to more people, and build a narrative BEYOND the 500 of us that are talking to each other on here.
People like @npub1l2v…ajft or @npub1der…xzpc can correct me if I am wrong here. Maybe there’s alot more to do technically.
But if I am right, I’d like to see more initiatives that are marketing oriented being supported by @npub17xv…c9as and @npub10pe…n34f and other coalitions. Maybe we even need a council of Nostr businesses, who together pool some funds to help drive some marketing initiatives?
Whatever the case, we need to expand upon the Nostr narrative, make it more compelling and speak to more people about it.
At the very least, we have to conquer then Bitcoiners. If we can’t get the segment who are into freedom money onto the freedom of speech network, we’re DOA. That’s a first step.
I know @npub1hz5…tysa is working on a very cool initiative in relation to this. The Nostr Booth is IMO a great way to make Nostr more “real” for bitcoiners by having a physical presence at all the conferences.
I know @npub1utx…50e8 + @npub180c…h6w6 are doing some Podcast outreach. That’s super important too. @npub16vr…p2va and crew are putting on Nostriga. Amazing. @npub16c0…6nvr / @npub12vk…pugg are doing great things with @npub1spd…q6j7, etc on the content side. I’ve got some things up my sleeve personally which I will begin to do once @npub15xd…t3l3 is in a position to represent a NEW kind of Nostr-product..
But we need MOAR..
And…we also need to find another angle that is NOT about censorship resistance. That’s clearly not working against X.
I don’t know the EXACT narrative or spin, but it has to be more “running towards” than “running from”.
More white pill, less black pill.
Anyway.
I will probably turn this into an article. I’ve been thinking more and more about “writing in public” as we build Satlantis, and sharing more about how we’re thinking about growing a “network product” on top of a “network protocol”.

Individual liberty is not common in >95% of the world, and importing people on mass without such a cultural basis is CLEARLY a recipe for disaster.

3 Life & Business Lessons from Leg Day...
(Expanding in a post from the other day)
Leg day is like a metaphor for life. You just DO the hard thing you don’t want to do, and you feel 1000 better afterwards.
It’s the single best area of the body to exercise. Not just for your health and fitness, but for your hormones and a balanced aesthetic.
It will do more to stem aging, lethargy & weakness than anything else you can do, or anyone can sell to you.
Now...what are the three life & business lessons?
1. Do the hard thing.
People skip leg day, in the same way they skip confrontations in life, or that big nagging problem in the business or relationship you need to handle, but you're scared to. It's painful, but after you do it, you will feel better.
2. Works on the foundations, that are “less visible”
Success in business (and life) is more about what you did behind the scenes. It's consistently showing up, doing what you need to do, and working on the things that are invisible to the public eye. And when people find out (reminds me of Steve Job's insistence on making the inside of a. computer beautiful) they are in awe. Legs are similar. They're usually under your pants, or people don't notice. Until they do - and they're in awe.
3. Simple is best.
Leg day does wonders for you hormonally (man or woman) too.
It's infinitely better than all the biohacking nonsense.
Same goes for business. All the bullshit "hacks" and "tricks" are short term noise. They might give you the illusion of an edge, but the basics always work best.
It’s the simple (but hard) things that matter most.

I wrote about this in early 2020.
The word "elite" comes from the Latin elitus, which means "choice" or "selected." It is related to the Latin word eligere, which means "to choose" or "to select."
The PIE root of the word "elite" is leg, which means "to collect" or "to gather."
To be elite is to be the ‘selected’. The choicest or the selected means ‘the best’ and thus to be elite is to be the best in your field.
To be the creme de la creme, the cream of the crop. To be distinguished and to be outstanding. In short, to be excellent.
The correct designation for the globo-homo meddlers and moochers is parasites. They suck from you, from me, from the economy, from the land and from the future.
It's our job to not only reclaim the word elite, but to become elite and eradicate the world of the parasites.

And I 100% agree.
I think Zaps are not as useful as bitcoiners naively think.
They become a little like likes anyway, bc they feel like random points (doesn’t feel like real money) and to Rabble’s point, points generally get allocated toward clickbait & sensationalism.
You can only do so much with a single like, but you can really skew things by throwing a bunch of meaningless “points” at it (and yes - at this stage, zap sats are pretty meaningless)

The greatest threat to humanity was and always will be the midwits.
Unfortunately, this includes 98% of modern scientists.
True scientific savants like the Newton's & Tesla's of the world understood that there was a difference between the study of matter, and the study of what matters.
The former is empirical in nature, and progressive. You're always improving, adapting, refining, deconstructing and evolving.
The latter is Lindy and timeless. The most important principles of life rarely change. Dominic Venner's definition of tradition comes to mind here:
"Tradition is not the past, but that which does not pass"

Trying to apply methodologies from the former onto the latter is not only stupid, but will yield sub-par results. Look no further than the lockdowns and transgenderism.
Likewise, applying methodologies of the latter onto the former doesn't work well. See the tribes of aborigines who still think the world was created by a rainbow snake.
There is a middle way, or more accurately put - a synthesis between both approaches - that requires knowing which questions are best answered (or even asked) in which broad domain.
People like @ylecun cannot see beyond their own paradigm and they are prisoners to it. Ironically, this leads them into creating new religions and dogmas like "scientism" and keeps them of the wisdom and answers they purport to seek.

One of the biggest issues we have today is the reverence and authority given to people like this.
He's "chief of AI" at Meta - which people think makes him super smart. So they go ahead believing the dumb things he says (like go get boosted), and then to not feel like they were lied to, double down on their support of these new dogmas and become part of the NPC army.

Ancient leaders knew where to put the scientists and technologists. And it was not in positions of ultimate authority, UNLESS they were men like Aristotle who could weave the two dimensions.
And even then, it was Alexander who ruled, not Aristotle - and Aristotle today is only known thanks to the spirit and conquest of Alexander.
