That’s not what bip 110 do : it changes rules at consensus level. knots itself allows you to run relay policy that is stricter (probably possible in core to but default much laxer and completely relaxed for op_return in core30)

I don’t understand why core 30 changed that. Even before core 30 a motivated attacker could (one of the arguments of core for changing) and it was indeed a situation where 99.9 pct of nodes were a running restrictive relay policy. And if you believe that most nodes having a restrictive or relax relay policy does not matter you can’t be mad at core 30 for changing that.
So my position is : “I wish consensus rules were different but they are the way they are and changing them is not not-costly and should be done carefully” and “I wish core did not change relay policy rule let’s continue to try to gather consensus first on this”

You are right ; we should continue. 20% of knots and 20% core 30 so 80 pct network running 80 capped op_return.
I would have preferred consensus to have capped op_return but the conservativeness in changing consensus is very important too (and, less so but also, the simplicity of consensus rules)
I disagree with changes implemented in relay policy by core. I believe it is reckless and arrogant. core has too much influence on the network through this type of changes I agree. But I am also happy that core can’t change consensus rules too easily.
I also want home solo mining to increase and I believe it will and we should aim for as much as possible designing own blocks through ocean
Then for BIP-110 itself I understand the motivation, the frustration etc, I am hesitating but it might be (at this stage at least) a bad precedent if it were to succeed and if does not reinforce core

Yes.
However trying to change consensus rules without broad agreement is not a good thing either even if the change itself is positive - I agree with Giacomo here. It must be very hard to change consensus.
IMO we should convince people / nodes to change their relay policy back to 80 cap on op_return and to solo mine with ocean defining their own block (at a cost in terms of expected profit and loss) as decentralized mining is very important too.

How is capping arbitrary data a “technical argument” that can be judged by “technical judgement” rather than a philosophical position on what bitcoin is and what it should optimise for?
Deciding about this is much more about “should we take the risk of jeopardizing Bitcoin as money for its potential use as data storage” than anything technical.

Bitcoin is permissionless for money
Money is important
Robustness is important
Mono-purpose usage limits the surface attack
Data limits is not censorship - censorship is very different. It is preventing people to say what they want or to transact with who they want / how they want. Limiting sizes of arb data on monetary network is not censorship.
A lot of devs that brought a lot to bitcoin don’t care about money. That’s fine. Work on other things. It is silly to give your effort and life for something you don’t care about. Bitcoin is a monetary network and protocol. Doing multiple things makes it more fragile for that important purpose.
@npub1au2…t53j clearly you are mot knowledgeable about bitcoin than me and you care about it as money and don’t favor spam. But i don’t understand your opposite too. To BIP-110 and i would like to. Consensus rules have changed historically. Reintroduction of op_return in 2014 was such a change. Why would (notably) limit Op_returns size at consensus level be an unacceptable change if it gathers consensus? Conservative position makes no sense if changes that harms the things we care most about have occurred. Only reactionary position makes sense then.
I agree with @npub1lh2…a9nk view that contiguous data being labeled arb data by the protocol is different morally and legally as non-contiguous being supposed to be something else. I disagree with a lot of Luke’s worldsview though but that I agree with. Minimum common denominator.
Then I really don’t want this thing to be broken. But I am not under the impression than BIP-110 is reckless : it takes a lot of precaution not to be. Core change of default relay policy 100kb for op_returns with little consensus was more reckless imo.

I have no idea anymore about this core vs knots drama.
I think bitcoin should be optimized for monetary use not for data storage. Changing default relay policy to 100kb seems to have little upside for monetary use. (I could understand a slight increase to help potential current / futures L2 without giving too much space for images)
The argument”otherwise spams go elsewhere in more harmful way” like in utxo set seems wrong to me.
1) they will continue doing that also as it is less expensive
2) I agree with Luke argument that it is not the same profoundly for an image (potentially unlawful) to be stored and coded in a place “specially done for arbitrary data so images for instance” in the protocol and in a place whose usage is changed by the spammers
So I don’t understand the core change in relay policy
However I see a lot of people I like and admire supporting the change and being obsessed by Bitcoin as money (and working on it hard) so I would like to understand genuinely their position (ignoring the toxicity of some of people on the other side or the willingness to show support to maintainers that have been harassed etc)

In the end, things are not binary. Default relay policy matter: entering a deal with a miner to put CP on the chain is a very identifiable way to do something illegal, which is not comfortable for the potential miner and the user that does it. Much easier for bad actors if non identifiable and miner can say not on purpose.

Je pense que le problème des autres « cryptos » est qu’en grande partie elle propose « fiat on steroids » plutôt que la sortie du fiat
Donc l’innovation qu’est le bitcoin est retournée contre elle même : au lieu de baisser la préférence pour le présent leurs cas d’usage sont ceux du fiat en pire : créer sa propre monnaie et l’imprimer a volonté pour scammer des naïfs, spéculer et trader toute la journée etc.
Le seul cas « utile » pour moi est les stablecoins mais on voit aussi que c’est proposer une alternative plus commode aujourd’hui car les gens ont l’habitude du usd mais qui ne résout rien au problème de fond à bitcoin pour le sujet des paiments et remittances
Et avec ça, ces projets comme ethereum ont passe leur temps à essayer de supplanter bitcoin en disant qu’ils étaient « plus modernes, plus innovants, ultrasound money » et tout un tas d’autres choses qui changent tout le temps
Ça ne fait à mon avis rien pour l’adoption de fond ou les cas d’usage sérieux et plutôt distrait les gens et rend les choses confuses. Il faut être moins pressé et comprendre que l’adoption réelle et profonde prend du temps

3. Un monde bitcoinise sortira effectivement en partie de la société de consommation qui est intimement lié à la monnaie fiduciaire et c’est souhaitable
4. Pour une monnaie ce qui est souhaitable est la simplicité, la robustesse, la décentralisation réelle, le conservatisme de la gouvernance, l’adaptation au monde moderne et la difficulté à la créer : bitcoin a tout ça, rien ne s’en approche
