One of my favorite things about homesteading or just having a large plot of land to work on everyday besides all that it provides is the ungodly amount of food I can consume without gaining any weight. 16 cucumbers salad with a whole block of feta and other things. This is my in between meals snack for today and tomorrow.

My soil is sand/rock. In one year not too much of a difference. But I really noticed my soil structure improving each year after that. It now is starting to hold together. My inputs are also declining every year. Warning, if the soil is super low infertility it can be even hard to get a cover crop going. I think especially with sand bio char aids this whole process, if you have the material to create it.

It was. Especially garlic for me. I like to grow my onions in clusters of 3. That way they stay medium size but I get an overall larger total yield.

I am lucky where I live. We have so many wild type of berries that proliferate. This is evergreen huckleberry they are ripening now but the great thing about this berry is they stay on the vine until at least December and they get better after a frost. I love to make a sauce with these that goes great on salmon. I’ve made ice cream with them. I’ve flavored mead also. This is one of the many reasons why I don’t mess with many of the permaculture shrub recommendations. Most of them are simply just massively inferior to the wild berry species that grow readily under nearly every pine around here.

If you get into seed saving. I politely suggest Joseph Lofthouse’s book landrace gardening. I found it to be much more approachable than most.

Sometimes, but usually not, i just figure with so many cooking resources out there, it’s not worth the effort. Also, cooking from the garden is kinda hard to translate into recipes. In comparison to standard recipes I can use so much more of an ingredient because it’s there in such quantity.

It’s a beautiful corn! Last year I had a good harvest of flint but I didn’t do a good enough of a dry down before putting it in a bucket. Lost 5 gallons of seed to mold.

Raspberry pick for the day 1pound 6 ounces. I get about that every other day. It is a 30 foot bed. I’m on week three of picking, my guess from what is on there probably have two more good weeks. After that a significant decline in the pickings. What I wonder is this good amount to expect? Anyways, I am expending the row to 60 feet for next year. Started working on it today. Fall might be early. If we get another good rain mushroom season is going to be excellent. I will do some scouting next week. I bet the lobsters will be starting.

I think they lessen over time and change as the soil improves. For me spring weeds are more tenacious than summer weeds. It’s like everything they go overboard with their expert claims trying either to sell a product or their services. You know the shill,“ no more pests ever.” “No more weeds.” “The biggest, the best and the most nutrient dense crop ever.”
How about, “get mineral profile balanced, try to improve biological practices and you will be surprised at how successful your garden can be.”

Grass or perennial cover crop mix would be great. Mow it every so often shooting the cover crop onto the growing beds effectively fertilizing them. I am going to experiment with that method in another area. No matter what anybody says weeds will always be an issue. There also is no way around hard work. It’s kinda like the sowell quote no solutions only trade offs.

I like them, but the main reason I use them is it leveled out the garden and it really helped out with areas that water gathered in the winter. I no longer have puddle issues. Some spots the chips are a foot deep. It seems to be improving the soil in the paths. Accidentally dropped seed if left alone are growing some decent quality plants.
