Now it's time for me to do some final harvesting and thinning once deciding what to keep and overwinter. It's also time to get cover crops into most of these tubs. Next year I plan to reduce the amount of vegetables and increase medicinal plants for drying and tincturing, as I have good local sources for veg but not for medicinal herbs. Potentially this could be a decent side hustle for me. But I seem to have a glut on the veg side of things as my farmer friends already keep me well supplied. So I'm considering turning my beds over to more unusual plants and more medicinal herbs instead. I'm going to chat with some chefs in town and see if they'd like some edible flowers or whatnot, or if I can grow something specific for them. I've been harvesting every day, definitely in my happy zone. What unusual plant or herb would you grow if given the chance? Four of my five potato bags look amazing, the garlic is ready to pull, and the plums, figs, and apples are coming in strong. My chicken coop is almost finished and ready for a fresh batch of birds from someone wanting to downsize their year old hens. I'm really ready to retire from a decade-plus of chicken tractoring; hope I can keep the yard decent by limiting the size of the flock on it and perhaps dividing up the yard into sections. We shall see. The deer did finally discover the buffet ๐คจ so I've been trying to thwart them without getting yet another outside dog (my maremma died of old age, there's no replacing him). I typically like to blend the two (like 1/3 to 2/3) but ultimately it depends on what you're baking and if you want more rise or more flavor. I don't get good rise at all with fresh ground whole wheat when I am baking a true sourdough without adding some all purpose. Sifting the ground wheat helps but it's a big pain and you lose a lot of bran. Some starters are more robust than others as well. There are a lot of ways to learn, and you don't necessarily have to go to a school. This is for a large pan. Halve it if you want to do a 9x9. And follow the directions no matter how weird it sounds. Preheat oven to 400 degrees (205c). Put 2 sticks of butter (227g) into your pan and stick it into the oven to melt it all while the oven's preheating. Watch it so it doesn't burn! Bowl #1: prep your fruit. I don't measure (sorry), just slice or chop it all evenly. I put in maybe 5 stalks of rhubarb and a large container of strawberries. You *could* use frozen but your cobbler will take a LOT longer to cook off all the excess moisture. Bowl #2: 2 cups flour, 2 cups sugar (we use sucanant, which is why it's all brown), 4 tsp baking powder. Don't let your butter burn. Take it out when it's all melted. Add 1 1/2 cups milk to your dry ingredients (not the fruit). Cover the melted butter with your wet mixture. Just plop it all in in big spoonfuls, all over evenly. It will look horrible. Just trust me and keep going. Then top with your prepped fruit. Pop it into the oven until done, maybe 25-30 minutes. It might be an hour if your fruit is frozen. It's done when the knife comes out clean. Try to let it sit 5 min before serving it warm with ice cream. Insurance is supposed to pay for it but it's still 500 bucks out of my own pocket for the deductible. $500 for their joy ride that I could have used in so many places. At least the kids' car seats were still there and the van tested clean of drugs (I insisted on testing). And. I learned when I got home from TX that the drive shaft on my pickup literally fell off onto the ground ๐ซ Another 200 bucks, at least. There's nothing I can do about any of that.
