I use the fediverse every single day. pleroma-fe is a pleasure to use and it is better than every nostr client. I don't plan to stop using the fediverse. but it kind of sucks.
instances can block each other for any reason. this practice is so widespread that the fediverse is splintered into neighborhoods with very little overlap. the most censored neighborhood has the most public visibility. a person who is learning the fediverse for the first time is extremely likely to land on a mastodon instance with very heavy-handed moderation. they will not be able to see or interact with someone from a spicy pleroma instance just because their admin thinks everyone who disagrees with him is a neonazi. they pass around lists of "nazi" instances to defederate from some of which have been offline for three years or more and never even did anything wrong. I have even seen fediverse instances defederate over use of the word "stupid" because stupid is an ableist slur. if you somehow wind up in the less censored neighborhood you will see people use the n word every day just because that's the only place where they can. the fediverse is basically not even all one thing anymore.

but then I also refuse to run a matrix server because of what graf posted:
matrix-synapse, the server software for the matrix stores every single thing a user account/device does in every room in two tables called state events. so if you opened or closed your matrix client on your phone while in this room, the matrix server has a record of that. if you changed your avatar, or your username. if you joined or left the room. it saves all that data. for everybody in every room the server is in.
so rooms like matrixHQ that have ~50k users in it, it's storing all that data for 50k users since march 2021.
now, that's not the only room thats an issue. there's rooms like the genshin impact room where somebody decided it was a wise idea to bridge the matrix room and a telegram channel with several thousand users, so now that matrix room is full of several thousand telegram bots also keeping tabs on those telegram users on/offline status, their name changes, their profile changes

there is something I didn't like that satoshi did and it's not talked about a lot. L2 blocks are compressed into proofs. a sequencer inserts the proofs into L1 and the state of a smart contract on L1 is transitioned. a few rollups have worked out an escape hatch so that users can retrieve funds if the sequencer dies, and the sequencer cannot steal anyone's money. but we still don't have an implementation for a decentralized sequencer. a rollup with an escape hatch is better than a sidechain, but finishing the decentralized sequencer would make it perfect.
rollups are the most popular L2 scaling solution. there is only one out of the top ten rollups that has less money in it than lightning. a few teams are working on implementing rollups on bitcoin. the implementations won't require bitcoin to have a fork.

you do touch L1, but only to get on and off, it only needs to happen to a coin once, and not everyone has to do it to maintain sovereignty. a person could transfer a million coins to a rollup, send them to other people who have never touched L1 before, and all the recipients would actually own them. this isn't possible with lightning. rollups don't use payment channels, they don't have concepts like inbound liquidity, and they don't require an individual user to interact with L1 to start owning his own coins. with lightning, you have to open your own channels from time to time and do L1 transactions to top off your inbound liquidity. there are also other limitations with payment channels that don't apply to rollups, such as routing issues and the size of payments.

you can't own your own money on lightning without making transactions on L1, and there is a limited capacity for people to do that. since this pressure exists, people are pushed into lightning custodians where they don't own their own money. lightning doesn't actually scale, it just rearranges itself into a custodial system by emulating banking. a good scaling solution would enable users to obtain coins on L2 and actually own them without having to directly touch L1. then L2 transactions would get compressed into proofs and inserted into L1 blocks. each L2 user would collectively pay into L1 transaction fees by having their transactions included in a proof. this blows the lid off of the node requirements, since the security is inherited from L1 once a transaction is published in a L1 proof. there are good scaling solutions and lightning simply isn't one of them.

that's just cope. you couldn't do a good medium of exchange if you tried. what's the point of even trying to do a store of value if all the value is getting stored in custodial accounts now? most people are using a custodial lightning wallet if they use lightning at all. it's designed so poorly that it rearranges itself into a custodial system. bitcoin devs haven't lifted a finger to make self-custody more accessible for large numbers of users. they just worked on lightning instead. bitcoin devs couldn't do a good medium of exchange so they gave up and changed the narrative to store of value, and they can't do a good store of value either.

when you debate a maxi, most of the time they don't understand what lightning is or what is being done with it. they did not actually read the documentation. they are just repeating what they believe they are supposed to say so that the price of bitcoin will go up. they never look at the documentation and try to understand the real consequences.

you can't point at bitcoin's market cap and use it as proof that bitcoin's developers are doing the right thing, or that bitcoin's leaders are facing the right direction. why? because that's what the Chinese government does. the Chinese government believes it has always done the right thing and it points at economic development as proof. "look at me, I'm in line with the way of heaven because I have a lot of money." asserting that you're completely in the right and everyone else is completely in the wrong because you have the most money is simply not an argument.
