So easy to grow your own sprouts!!!
This is all you need... a jar with lid that stains or a cloth with a rubber bands, seeds and water.
Use them on sandwiches, in salads, on soups, as a snack in kids lunchboxes..... very versatile & packed with nutrients.

We have processed a few roosters lately, the last batch measuring at 1.9kg, 1.9kg, 1.6kg and 2.0kg. We have had some amazing meals, chicken and noodle soup, chicken and mushroom risotto, hot pot where you cook your own bits in broth or fry them on the edge - (the kids like the interactive eating!)
Honestly, broth made with real chicken ... it feels like home. You can feel every cell responding in your body.... you can feel it heal you in real time.

Cheeky female satin bower bird - favourite things to do include nicking dogs biscuits, helping herself to items in the veggie garden, making interesting noises and being very clever but always watching from a safe distance.
Haven't seen a male bower around the property yet, but will definitely post a picture when we come across one as they are quite the sight to see with all the collected blue items scattered around an impressive stick structure.

My favourite chickens.... quambies! A bred developed in Tasmania, Australia, not yet formally recognised, bred as a dual purpose for meat and egg production but as a backyard, heritage style chicken.
I didn't realise how large the chickens are until I bought a bbq chicken from the shops the other day. Please write a comment if you are interested in learning more about them! We process our own roosters and hatch eggs using an incubator. Happy to share processes, coop design (I'm all about systems that need little input), feed (no they are not completely free range - I love my garden too much!)

That's a good question!! The only benefit they provide is keeping the snakes away.... they are noisy, messy and always seem aloof and entitled.... we were given the peahen from my mum and dad, and we bought the peacock because she needed a friend .....but they do sell for $150 bucks so that's something.
They do grow on you though.

Teaching my kids about exponential growth.....
I told her she can have $50 if she can complete the task. All she has to do is put one grain of rice on the first square, then double it on each of the 64 squares. It starts by seeming trivial, but by the final squares the total has exploded to over **18 quintillion grains** (more than the number of grains of rice on earth).
At first she thought I was testing her grit/perseverance. She wasn't super pleased that "I had tricked her and wasted her time" but I really hope the concept sticks with her.

The boomer re mortgage situation you describe.... I hear constantly from my inlaws. Add to that how much money they made from the housing market but they cannot comprehend that societal economic factors have dramatically changed and it's not a viable strategy for us. Huge differences include 1) not being able to support a "modest" house purchase on one family income (let alone multiple houses) 2) interest rates in australia hitting just under 18% in the late 80s/ early 90s, theoretically rba could hike rates aggressively (due to inflation surging uncontrollably) but it would most likely crash the economy (re they need to choose between collapse or money printing - my money is on the latter) 3) just ethically it's not the right thing to do anymore now there is a better solution
I agree with what you're saying and it's painful to watch.... it's like people don't read books anymore and have this weird belief that what happened in the past cannot happen to them (or even whats happening in another country like currency collapse i.e. greece, lebanon, iran)...
I think the stories from a few generations back are more important than the immediate generation just passed, that bad history repeating itself is more a hundred (or so) year cycle

All three eggs hatched the day after we got back from holidays which was very thoughtful of them.

Check out this beautiful, fluffy baby Kookaburra!!! Have really enjoyed their breeding season over the past couple of months as they have been doing lots of early morning calling and territory patrols. So grateful for our amazing home where the Kookaburras really do "sing in the old gum tree"... I used to sing this song to my baby girls all the time, so it is extra special to live on a property and this to be our everyday reality.

Not much flowering for us this season but these pretty pink hydrangeas have brightened my day.
Lately I have been feeling the bearish sentiment radiating from those around me online and in person and I've even caught myself asking questions like "what if I'm wrong?" and then I remember "21 million" which is less than 1 per person for the entire population of Australia, let alone the world and I go and buy more sats.

Sold these two netherlands dwarfs yesterday 🥰 This is my daughter's project. Teaching about responsibility, livestock care and money all at the same time.
This was Oreo's first litter - she hasn't had any 'peanuts' yet, she had a litter of three and all of them thrived.

I am locking down the eggs for hatching, hopefully hatching is on the 30 December 2026 - the last batch for the year! very excited (as always) to get more quambies.
Quamby chickens are a relatively recent Australian heritage breed developed in Tasmania by retired biochemist Dr Gil Stokes, who spent about seven years selectively breeding them from English Sussex and New Hampshire stock to combine strong egg production with good meat quality. The Quamby hen can lay up to around 300 eggs a year, and the birds are known for being hardy, friendly, and excellent foragers.
I have also had a hen recently successfully hatch eggs - so far she is an egg-cellent mum! Is there anything more enjoyable than watching a clucky hen with her brood?!
