"That white fuzz isn't mold. It's a fungus eating poison.
For decades, Maine farmers spread sludge on their fields because the state told them it was safe. The sludge — treated municipal waste — was licensed, regulated, and marketed as free fertilizer. What nobody mentioned was that the wastewater treatment plants were processing effluent from paper mills, tanneries, and textile factories that used PFAS, the "forever chemicals" that don't break down in soil, water, or human blood. The farmers didn't know. The state didn't test for it. The chemicals just accumulated, year after year, in the hay, the milk, the beef, the groundwater. By 2025, over 100 Maine farms and 500 residential properties tested positive. Five farms closed. Three scaled back. The rest were watching their livelihoods dissolve into the dirt.
Then Maine did something no other state had tried.
The Department of Environmental Protection funded a project using wood-rot fungi mycelium to biologically break down PFAS chemicals. The mechanism is enzymatic degradation — specific species of white-rot fungi, including Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Trametes versicolor, produce extracellular enzymes called laccases and peroxidases that attack the carbon-fluorine bonds in PFAS molecules. Those bonds are among the strongest in organic chemistry, which is why PFAS are called "forever chemicals." The fungi don't care. They evolved to break down lignin in rotting wood, and their enzymes are indiscriminate enough to shred fluorinated compounds that industrial chemistry couldn't touch.
Here's why this is mechanically brilliant. Traditional PFAS remediation involves excavation, incineration, or deep-well injection — all expensive, energy-intensive, and destructive to soil structure. Mycoremediation works in place. The mycelium is mixed into contaminated soil as a spore-infused substrate — usually sawdust, straw, or wood chips — and left to colonize. Over 12 to 18 months, the fungal network spreads through the soil profile, secreting enzymes that degrade PFAS into shorter-chain compounds, then into harmless fluoride ions and carbon dioxide. The process doesn't sterilize the soil. It rewilds it.
The second-order effect is scalable and democratic. Wood-rot fungi are not exotic lab creations. They grow on dead trees in every forest in Maine. The spores can be cultivated in simple incubators, mixed with local agricultural waste, and applied by farmers themselves. A dairy farm in Fairfield that lost its organic certification due to PFAS contamination is now running a pilot mycoremediation plot, measuring degradation rates and documenting soil microbiome recovery. If the data holds, Maine will have a remediation tool that costs a fraction of industrial alternatives and can be deployed by the people who need it most.

"The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) has officially regained ownership of the sacred Nikwasi (Noquisiyi) Mound in Franklin, North Carolina, marking one of the most significant Indigenous land restoration milestones in the southeastern United States.
The transfer was completed on February 26, 2026, following a deed-signing ceremony between EBCI Principal Chief Michell Hicks and Franklin Mayor Stacey Guffey. The return came after the Franklin Town Council unanimously voted to remove the remaining legal barriers to transferring the site directly to the Tribe.
Built around 1000 CE, Nikwasi Mound served as the ceremonial, political, and spiritual center of an important Cherokee mother town. In Cherokee tradition, Noquisiyi means “Star Place” and is associated with the Nunne’hi, spiritual protectors described in Cherokee oral history.
After Cherokee communities lost control of the site during the early 1800s, the mound remained under non-Tribal ownership for more than two centuries. In 1946, local residents helped protect it from industrial development, and it was later added to the National Register of Historic Places.
The Tribe plans to preserve the mound for future generations and has also acquired nearby property to develop an educational center where visitors can learn about Cherokee history, culture, and the significance of the site.

"Robert Owen paid around $150,000 for the town of Harmonie, Indiana. He got 20,000 acres, more than 160 buildings, working mills, and farms already producing food.
He renamed it New Harmony. Close to a thousand people arrived in the first year.
Owen already ran successful textile mills in New Lanark, Scotland, where he was famous for treating workers well and running a profitable business at the same time.
He believed that if you removed private property and paid everyone equally, cooperation would naturally replace competition.
In January 1826, William Maclure sailed a riverboat full of scientists, teachers, and geologists down the Ohio River to New Harmony. Historians call it the "Boatload of Knowledge."
Thomas Say, the father of American entomology, was on it. So was Charles-Alexandre Lesueur, one of the most respected naturalists of the era.
This was the most educated, best-funded, best-equipped socialist community ever attempted on American soil. If cooperation could beat markets anywhere, it should have worked here.
It collapsed almost immediately.
The hardest workers were feeding, housing, and clothing neighbors who did nothing while receiving the same food, the same shelter, and the same rewards. So they stopped working too. Why wouldn't they?
Production dropped and food ran short. Buildings decayed because no one owned them and no one was responsible for maintaining them. Endless meetings replaced actual work. Owen wrote seven different constitutions in two years trying to fix it. None of them worked.
American inventor Josiah Warren, one of the country's earliest libertarian thinkers, was there. He watched the community fail from the inside and later wrote about why.
His conclusion: "The difference of opinion, tastes and purposes increased just in proportion to the demand for conformity."
The more the community demanded unity, the more it fractured.
Warren identified the deeper problem almost a century before Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich Hayek made it famous in academic economics.
When everyone owns everything, no one owns anything. When labor earns the same reward regardless of effort, effort disappears. When prices vanish, no one knows what anything is worth.
Owen finally admitted defeat in 1827. In his farewell address, he blamed the settlers themselves, saying they were "unprepared to be members of the community of common property and equality."
Translation: the system would have worked if only people had been different.
Every socialist regime since has offered some version of that excuse.
His own son, Robert Dale Owen, put it plainly years later:
"All cooperative schemes which provide equal remuneration to the skilled and industrious and the ignorant and idle must work their own downfall."
He had lived through the collapse. He knew what killed it.
Every socialist experiment since New Harmony has ended the same way, and for the same reasons.
Prices communicate what things are worth. Ownership creates responsibility for maintaining them. When both are abolished, production collapses because no one can calculate what to make or repair." #socialism

The Divine Comedy begins in darkness, in a forest, at midpoint of life, completely lost. Before Dante can ascend through Paradise, he must first descend through every circle of hell. This was not an accident of narrative structure. It was the teaching. The journey upward is only available to the one who has first gone all the way down. There is no shortcut that bypasses the descent and arrives at the light. Virgil does not lead Dante around the underworld. He leads him through it.
Every tradition that has mapped the inner journey has placed this same requirement at its center. The alchemical process begins with the nigredo, the blackening, the stage of putrefaction in which everything the ego has constructed is dissolved. The Sufi path requires the annihilation of the self before union with the divine becomes possible. The shamanic initiation across cultures involves a symbolic death, the dismemberment of the old self, before the healer can return with the capacity to heal others. Jung called this the night sea journey, the descent into the unconscious that precedes genuine transformation.
The reason most people do not reach paradise is not that they are incapable of it. It is that they are unwilling to begin in hell. They want the ascent without the descent, the light without the darkness, the resolution without the suffering that makes resolution possible.
Hell, in Dante’s framework, is not punishment. It is the honest confrontation with what is. The souls in the Inferno are not there arbitrarily, they are experiencing the full reality of the choices they made in life. To walk through hell is to see clearly. And clarity, however painful, is the beginning of every genuine ascent.
The path does not avoid the darkness. The path goes through it.
