Mobile or "landlines"? I've belatedly realised a lot of the issues I have with mobiles are probably down to tiny mics and speakers. My well known mobile number now rings on my dect handsets courtesy of @npub1sv0…rq9x and I find that helps a lot (can't be codec related as AA only do the basic standard thing.)

perhaps the solution is bring the technology "full circle", so to speak. My nieces are still interested in physical objects and the outside world .. perhaps showing them "solarpunk" uses of tech, e.g. solar generation, automated plant watering systems, etc might trigger an interest?

I guess each generation "tinkers" at a different level. I think my grandfather and uncle couldn't understand why I was fiddling with software instead of breadboarding circuits with discrete components.
That having been said, mobile devices are significantly more locked down than any previous platform in history. Without a "real computer", that may impose a fairly solid restriction on what can be learned :(
