FYI:
While some states in the US have #PaidParentalLeave, if someone lives in a state that doesn’t, and their company doesn’t offer it either, they can also get a short term disability insurance policy that’ll give them paid leave.
You just have to make sure to enroll before getting pregnant, otherwise it’s considered a preexisting condition.

1. You can log in to your Mastodon, Bluesky, or Nostr account and see the feed for your existing follows on those accounts.
2. You can also follow users from those protocols regardless of which type of account you're logged in to, but right now the cross-protocol following only works from a Mastodon account.

@npub1jr5…7s49 Ah that's a bug on my part. Agora is a fork of Phanpy, and I've disabled the multi-column view from Phanpy to keep things simple while I build out Agora, for now at least. I see that it still mentions the feature on the landing page, so I'll remove that, thank you!

On the left, you have the default Mastodon web UX when you try to see who a user follows if that user doesn't use the same instance as you. Basically "idk, click here to go to their profile on that other instance and find out"
On the right, you have the UX on Agora when you check who they follow. It automatically pulls that info in from their instance and just shows you, no need to think about jumping around instances or opening new tabs.

If we do hope for the fediverse to supplant centralized social networks, while being able to support the storage/bandwidth requirements that come with a userbase that huge, advertising is inevitable as one of the sources to financially sustain instances.
Not to be brash, but thinking a future fediverse the size of FB/Twitter/etc can operate solely on donation-supported instances is plain delusional.

bird.makeup is a twitter bridge that makes Mastodon much more appealing for those wanting all their follows in one place. So it's super lame that many of the largest instances chose to outright block it, rather than setting it to limited.
The entire purpose of "limited" is that only users who explicitly follow someone on the limited instance, will see that persons posts. So what's the problem?

When you click that link, it takes you directly to the mastodon.social url of the post, and if that's not your home instance, you can't interact with the post. A truly mastodon-native quote post would automatically direct a user to their instance's link to that post so they can interact with it.

In support of user autonomy, it would be nice to see Mastodon clients notifying users when a profile they’re searching is on a remote instance that’s blocked by their instance, and then offer to load it for them directly if they still want to see it.
Instance admins have the right to choose what gets federated to their servers, but users shouldn’t be totally at the whim of those admins decisions.

@npub1xts…kk5s As for lowering expenses, it would be totally reasonable to turn the Damus relay into a @npub1pag…uw9d style contact-list relay meant only to bootstrap gossip discovery of other users relays. There can be a second full fledged Damus relay that subscribers to Damus+ get access to. As it is, the Damus relay shoulders way too much of the load.

Here are a few things that come to mind that may help!
Getting sustainable/consistent income:
1. Have a dialogue that pops up once after installation, that allows users to opt-in to zap-splits, so that every time someone zaps a post, Damus gets a %
2. A "Damus+"/"Damus Pro" etc paid subscription tier with extra features
3. Turn amazon/walmart/etc links in posts into referral links, and have that be opt-in of course.

I know it’s not a popular opinion around these parts, but relying solely on donations to fund a healthy ecosystem of mastodon instances is not sustainable long term, especially if the user base continues to grow.
Thinking that it’ll be enough either shows a very high level of confidence in people’s generosity, or a lot of delusion.
It’s going to take privacy friendly and high quality ads in the feeds to keep things going as instances grow, with some premium subscriptions on the side.

This is why the write-side should aim to mitigate this by tracking uptime with a tool like nostr.watch, and intelligently rotating a users write-relays when some go down.

I give the @npub1rhp…h87n team a lot of credit for the reverse engineering they’ve managed to do.
Having said that, I think the way to go long term for cross-platform messaging will be #RCS. Once #Apple adds it next year, all iOS + #Android will have it automatically and it’ll just work.
