I think from a independent/underground musicians point of view, not using streaming services, but services like Bandcamp, @npub1qjl…8wry or the new star in (complete) audio self publishing: Faircamp...
makes a lot of sense.
But I have no illusion that most of the people, who are more into "passive" music consumption (not actively looking for exciting adventures in discovering new music) will never leave Streaming Services (with those curated playlists and "mood" auto playlist... all that horror) until there is a "better" (for being even more passive) alternative.
And those people will always be the majority. I know even a lot of passionate music lovers, who would never look into Bandcamp. "Why? It's all in my paid flatrate music service!!". And yes, they know about the per stream payment injustice against artists.
My consequences:
I only talk about my Bandcamp (and in the future about Mirlo and Faircamp as well) in the open, which happens to be the Fediverse only (I don't use other social network services).
All my tracks are Creative Commons licensed anyway, I see all those services (Bandcamp style as well as Spotify style) as a bonus and an effective way for distribution.
Anyway, while taking about Bandcamp and such I silently unload my complete albums (not single releases) via a Distrokid-style service to the major streaming platforms as well. Yes that's extra fees, right now I can afford this; it doesn't pay out with average 10 streams per track per service in 3 years.
But the majority of people have access to it through their streaming flatrates, and that's my wish. What I don't like is, that that makes me a victim (in financial terms) that feeds those, who make me a victim.
That's why I actively comment against people who share Spotify playlists here in the Fediverse, as if it's the most natural thing to do. And by the way, that seems to be what those people think. They honestly believe, everyone else has a Spotify account. No, I don't, I will never use any app by Spotify and I tell those people about it - which makes me the obsessed nerd in their eyes. Hmm.

Nooooo, @npub1vpd…vgym don't listen, don't do that. It's perfect for that "vector" style, as it is. Also the poster/ad back then didn't have it.
I know, there wasn't a VGA version, but later games like money Island were always nagging me. They had full 256 colors, they could have used full 200 colors for a perfectly smooth background, probably less because there is never a place where there is a vertical stripe full of sky, so more like 160 colors max. leaving 96 colors for the rest. And when changing color every second line only half of it.
Instead perfect 90° gradients but dithered in like 12 shades of blue.
Damn it, every time I was playing Monkey Island it was soooo much enraging me! I had the luxury of having 256 colors at the same time, yet someone thought: Ahhh: Let us dither this!
Even on the Amiga! Which had hardware for it (copper functionality): Change the background color every scan line. Have 31 colors for the rest...
No I should go back under my pillow trying very hard to forget about all those Lukasfilm/LukasArts missed technically opportunities. The games were good nevertheless... but what could have been...

Hmm - the only Qix source named as such is in Z80 assembler. That is not the SID version.
Apparently he used "Software Creations Music Driver" by Stephen Ruddy since 1987 (also on the NES). See this page

This is positively insane!! Also the small gap between the hardware (thinking in cycles!) and the music is striking. Often back then, game musicians were programmers as well, writing their sound playing routines in assembler by themselves.
I'm not a huge fan of Tims work but some of his later C64 tracks (like Gauntlet 3) are pure gold nevertheless.

He did also some remarkable tracks on the NES which stand out alone for trying to exploit it's chip to the max and being less "infantile" and more groovy than most Japanese soundtracks (Konami soundtracks being a noticable exception). Silver Surfer is one of those games.

Yeah, I'm glad I managed to finish this one. Would have been a waste to never show it to the world. Started around 2005 with it in Jeskola Buzz tracker. Worked every then and when on it. Over the years, when the world around me changed. When my life changed. Considered it done in 2021. Yes. I take my time for my stuff.
About the meaning of the title? I won't tell. You seem to be very very vague and at the same time very very close. Keep it what it is for you. Nothing beats that!

hmmm. To me a spontaneous "forget about being autistic, an autistic person doesn't look the way you do" sounds like a personal reference and not like serious scientific/medical fact finding.
Still there might be a wrong diagnosis before, but not even considering that "learned/played back behavior" you mentioned... just to blend in... looks bloody amateur to me. Unfortunately owning a professional grade doesn't guarantee professional work.

can't attend tonight, unfortunately, but anyway.
Yo! Joe! on PC was a bitch to crack. With self modifying code it was not really possible to detect the copy protection check points and boy, they where all over the game.
Therefore the most efficient way to make it "fully working" was to play the whole game (including secret passages and stuff) with a debugger in the back. The moment the game crashed was the moment you knew where to set your break points. ...or so I was told.
Would be interesting if they invested as much info the Amiga version.

Personally I don't like that #jamuary idea too much.
The idea to come up with a song every day doesn't sound nice and creative to me. But like a painfully bloodsucking burnout machine!
Sure, the first week may be fun, but then?
It's most easy for guitar/singer like setups, or piano+singer I guess, but even then. It will drag sooner or later. Downwards! I could apply to the piano/singer gang, however I'm not to keen to do songwriter style stuff every day, I like more experimental things sometimes, or dancefloor compatible things in other times.
I need 6h per tune minimum so it meets my own minimum standards. Imagine having to take 6-8h per day to invest into music (when even creativity blocks may appear) when there is a 8h job (typically more with ways and pauses), family, kid? It's dragging even without all that. It's enough to get you away from music making, even hating it forever!
Now you may say, noone is forcing you. It's okay to submit 1 tune even.
Fine, but why not saying so - AS A CLEAR RULE with highest priority? Like: Submit as many as you want, 1 is enough?
Because it's clearly spark an unhealthy kind of a competition. My timeline is full of people telling how hard it is now that January ends to come up with something. Anything. Surprise. Smells like burnout. Is that the intent?
And if not, why didn't someone think about it?
I'm out (and I was never in).
#fawm is similar (just that graciously "only" every second day a tune should be ready for it, if I remember that right - also with some small addition somewhere, that it doesn't need to be that frequency. If so, then say that in the FIRST PLACE!).

#nightshade is making waves in the Fediverse promising artists it makes their work not even resisting but fighting AIs trying to analyze their images.
It's way blown over the top.
First of all:
This is not what I call serious software. There isn't even a Linux download link?!
Where are they living? On corporate island?
Then: Looks like it only works decent with Nvidia cards and because it's an AI model by itself (they try not to mention this) like all LLMs it needs a decent amount of memory on a Nvidia card (min 5GB) to operate... and I'm just sick of "scientists" only supporting Nvidia. I call it technological incest.
Last: I can find no Git repo of it which just proves the overall lameness. But there is this, hehe:

Come on, why do you need to use AI generated or otherwise heavily edited images for this?
This is a valid concern with billions of valid pictures available supporting this.
Using images like this makes me unnecessarily feel as being manipulated in cheap ways. I see this kind of image and think: Fake! Don't trust anything attached.
That's contrary to what you want to achieve!

But you may have to arrange yourself with the fact that you are going to make music, better to "program music" (as this is the historic background of those things) with a spreadsheet app :)
Kinda similar to hardware sequencers.
That may seem to be off turning or cold or non expressive at first.
But as every instrument it grows on you. And to make it grow on you, it takes time. You'll be frustrated fast, if you don't accept this.
Nowadays the best tracker (arguably but mostly agreed with) is Renoise where you can use all your VSTs and even Linux LADSPA (which unfortunately is an older standard, there are better things around now) virtual instruments/effects. That is a real life changer, because now you can eq, compress and all that mix-relevant stuff, which was a pain in old skuhl trakkers.

Luka (@npub1wmj…uwf7) did start the trend (not only yesterday, he is doing it from time to time) to dig out old (previously unreleased?) tracker modules from the 90s.
That reminds me, that I'm also sitting on a bunch of unreleased tracker modules. ;) Why not doing the same then? :)
Well, back then, in 1995, I was not "the nmi!" I was "da nme!" and under that handle I was part of a demo crew called "YLYSY" which didn't release shit. Lazy coders, lazy graphicans, only me, the musician did stuff, lots of stuff, but it never got released, I never got "scene-fame" :(

As a decent scene guy I had a #GUS (Gravis Ultrasound - the very first soundcard like a sampler with its own RAM for samples), and I primary used Tritons Fasttracker II for tracking. There was a kind of friendly war between musicians back then: IT (Impulsetracker - spiritual successor of Scream Tracker Luka used) or FT2 (Fast Tracker II). BTW, I've used Screamtracker as well, but for Adlib FM music (this wasn't covered by IT or FT)!
Anyway, stuff had to fit into the GUSes sample ram, and this was 512KB in my case (later I've upgraded to whopping 1MB) – so there I had to make compromises to fit stuff into those 512KB, mainly by sampling samples down to 22KHz or/and converting from 16Bit to 8Bit.
The track you're about to hear is called "Hallways" and was done in 1995 (when I was 22y). There is a Beastie Boys loop in it I back then didn't realize it's a Beastie Boys loop because I've recorded it to tape from radio during a show where no one said what was played. I honestly thought it's totally underground ;) .
The other feature in this song was this: I had found a sample editor which could do Reverb! REVERB!! I didn't had the money for real gear, but this sample editor could add Reverb to whatever sample I fed in, and after only a couple of minutes (yes minutes) calculating... it was there!!! Because of sample ram limitations again, I had to use loop points to loop the reverbed sample parts in Fast Tracker :)

Whoa, I never quite understood the hype around #Pokemon even among grown ups, now I do! ;)
Did you know that one particular Episode from the Pokemon TV series led to more than 600 children across Japan taken to hospitals in the 90s?
That episode was never ever shown again. A blurry reference to it in a Tweet from 2020 from the official Pokemon account was deleted soon after publishing. It's that dangerous!

OMG, thanks for the high praise.
Dunno, I could have handled some things better. I.e. there are parts with a bit too much going on, which hurts the grooviness. I think one rule of classic acid (and that is the aim, that is, what I intend to do for this challenge), is using a reduced to the core setup. 808, 303, maybe another synth for pads, maybe a sample for FX. I broke this rule in terrible ways...
But it was done in quite a hurry (you know ;) ), and it was done for phun nevertheless, and indeed I had phun, creating it.
And it won't have been created at all, if it would not be for the Aciddecember challenge. As I'm absolutely not an avid dude at all. So thank you guys for pushing me!!

That's of course also a matter of personal preferences and taste. If you like the game – that's what matters. :-)
And it's by no means a bad game.
But because of this confusing "enemies level up with you, but they level up faster" mechanics I wouldn't recommended it for starters. Personally the soldier oriented storyline doesn't fit my taste.

VIII is frustrating, because the game is punishing you for grinding, which is absurd, because there are moments, when you really feel the need of grinding – that should have been solved way better. Intro scene is gold though, but it doesn't hold up.

I always get strange looks like "Are you stupid or what?!" when I say, the best video game ever is...
FINAL FANTASY VI (or III in the US).
And I would never guess, who is going to back up me on this:
The Angry Video Game Nerd.
At first I was skeptical, almost frightened: Will he destroy my favorite game in his usual super cynical ways?
Well, he didn't. He did in fact such a good praise, I couldn't do better. IN ALL ASPECTS!
I truly have never seen a more fair and all things covering homage to that OUTSTANDING game.
The opera scene is there. The suicide scene (which almost made me quit the game) is there. Everything that matters is there. But still no real spoilers. There is even praise for that other HUGE SNES game out there – Chrono Trigger – which btw. originally was meant to be the successor of Final Fantasy VI (which was Final Fantasy III in the US - yes I mentioned it, but not that this happened because Nintendo US was stupid, and this in so many ways).
And say what you want about the AVGN , this is damn well done, even if you don't agree.
And if you aren't familiar with the old™ Final Fantasy franchise – here are my "must play" recommendations (in order of "well doneness"):
* Final Fantasy VI (III in the US, did I mention this?) / SNES
* Final Fantasy VII / PS1
* Final Fantasy IX / PS1
* Final Fantasy X / PS2
* Final Fantasy V / SNES
* Final Fantasy XII / PS2
Everything after XII, even the FFVII remake sucks. Stay away!

What about SoundCloud, Audiomack and so on?
What about Spotify, YouTube, Deezer etc.?
It's probably already too late to act now (I would withdraw my music immediately, but the damage would be done already), but giving up and let the case rest would be no option (for me).

People who ask/asked "But can it run Crysis?, lol!" are completely incompetent. Never work with them on any technical project.
They have absolutely no idea on how many levels #Doom is amazing, why it dominates the world and why it indeed runs on (almost) everything while Crysis won't and never will (it's already almost forgotten).
