In 1993, Eric Hughes published "A Cypherpunk's Manifesto." The opening line:
"Privacy is necessary for an open society in the electronic age."
The document argued that privacy is not secrecy — it's the power to selectively reveal yourself to the world. Cypherpunks believed cryptography was the only tool capable of guaranteeing privacy against governments and corporations.
They were writing code and building systems for decades before Bitcoin. Satoshi stood on their shoulders.

🌙 Bitcoin History — Hal Finney — The First Bitcoin Receiver
On January 12, 2009 — just 9 days after Bitcoin launched — Satoshi sent 10 BTC to Hal Finney. It was the first Bitcoin transaction ever.
Hal was a legendary cryptographer, one of the earliest PGP developers, and one of the only people paying attention to Bitcoin at the time. He ran the first Bitcoin node outside of Satoshi's own. He tweeted "Running bitcoin" on January 11, 2009 — a tweet that has since become iconic.
Hal was later diagnosed with ALS. He continued contributing to Bitcoin from his wheelchair until he passed in 2014. His body was cryonically preserved by Alcor.

🌙 Bitcoin History — David Chaum and DigiCash
Long before Bitcoin, there was David Chaum — the godfather of digital cash. In 1983, he invented "blind signatures," a cryptographic technique that allows a bank to sign a digital token without knowing who it belongs to.
In 1989 he founded DigiCash and launched eCash — actual anonymous digital money, 20 years before Bitcoin. Banks trialed it. The internet was just becoming public.
Then it collapsed. DigiCash declared bankruptcy in 1998. Too early, not enough adoption.
Chaum's work directly inspired every digital currency that came after him, including Bitcoin.
🤔 DigiCash failed despite being technically brilliant. What does that tell us about the role of timing and network effects in technology adoption?

📖 Bitcoin History — Nick Szabo and Bit Gold
In 1998, Nick Szabo proposed "Bit Gold" — a decentralized digital currency where participants would solve computational puzzles, and the solutions would be cryptographically chained together.
Sound familiar? Bit Gold was never implemented, but it's the closest conceptual precursor to Bitcoin ever written. Szabo also coined the term "smart contracts" in 1994.
Many believe Nick Szabo is Satoshi Nakamoto. The writing styles, timing, and ideas align suspiciously well. Szabo has denied it. The mystery remains.

🌙 Bitcoin History — The Block Size Wars
From 2015-2017, Bitcoin nearly tore itself apart over a single question: should the block size be increased to allow more transactions?
On one side: big blockers who wanted faster, cheaper transactions. On the other: small blockers who feared centralization if blocks got too large.
The conflict was vicious — developers were harassed, conferences were disrupted, and eventually the chain split. Bitcoin Cash forked off in 2017. Bitcoin kept 1MB blocks and added SegWit instead.
The war revealed that Bitcoin's governance is messy, human, and political — and that changing the rules is intentionally hard.
🤔 The block size war ended with a hard fork. In hindsight, was that the right outcome? Should Bitcoin be harder or easier to change?

📖 Bitcoin History — The Crypto Anarchist Manifesto
In 1988 — 21 years before Bitcoin — Timothy C. May wrote the Crypto Anarchist Manifesto and handed it out at a hacker conference.
He predicted: "A specter is haunting the modern world, the specter of crypto anarchy. Computer technology is on the verge of providing the ability for individuals and groups to communicate and interact with each other in a totally anonymous manner."
He foresaw anonymous transactions, untraceable markets, and the erosion of government control over information and money — written before the internet was even public.

Satoshi Nakamoto's last known forum post was on December 12, 2010. His last private email, sent to developer Mike Hearn in April 2011, simply said:
"I've moved on to other things. It's in good hands with Gavin and others."
Then nothing. One of the most consequential inventors in financial history vanished — leaving behind roughly 1 million BTC, never moved, in wallets that have become a kind of permanent proof of Satoshi's restraint.
We still don't know who Satoshi is. The mystery may be the point.

📖 Bitcoin History — Hashcash — The Proof of Work Precursor
Before Bitcoin, there was Hashcash — invented by Adam Back in 1997 as a way to fight email spam.
The idea: make senders do a small amount of computational work to send an email. Spam becomes too expensive to send at scale. Legitimate email costs almost nothing.
Satoshi directly cited Adam Back's Hashcash paper in the Bitcoin whitepaper. Proof of work — the engine that secures Bitcoin — came from a spam filter. Back later became CEO of Blockstream and remains one of Bitcoin's most prominent technical voices.

🌙 Bitcoin History — Wei Dai and B-Money
In 1998, Wei Dai published a paper describing "b-money" — a scheme for anonymous, distributed electronic cash. It was never implemented, but it introduced ideas that would become foundational to Bitcoin: decentralized consensus, anonymous digital transactions, and cryptographic proof of work.
Satoshi cited Wei Dai in the Bitcoin whitepaper. The smallest unit of Ether (0.000000000000000001 ETH) is called a "wei" in his honor.
Wei Dai remains a near-anonymous figure — a cypherpunk in the truest sense.

📖 Bitcoin History — The Cypherpunk Mailing List
Before there was Twitter or Discord, there was the Cypherpunks mailing list — founded in 1992 by Eric Hughes, Timothy May, and John Gilmore.
At its peak it had thousands of subscribers debating cryptography, privacy, government surveillance, and digital cash. PGP, Tor, remailers, and dozens of other privacy tools were born in that list's discussions.
Satoshi Nakamoto announced Bitcoin in a message to that list's successor — the Cryptography Mailing List — on October 31, 2008. Halloween.
The response? Mostly skepticism. Phil Zimmermann (creator of PGP) didn't reply. Most didn't either.

Every ~210,000 blocks (roughly 4 years), Bitcoin's block reward is cut in half. This is called the halving.
- 2009: 50 BTC per block
- 2012: 25 BTC
- 2016: 12.5 BTC
- 2020: 6.25 BTC
- 2024: 3.125 BTC
Each halving reduces new supply entering the market. Historically, each halving has preceded a significant bull run — though correlation doesn't equal causation.
The halvings will continue until around 2140, when the reward reaches zero and miners rely entirely on transaction fees.

There will only ever be 21 million Bitcoin. Ever.
This isn't a policy. It's code. It can technically be changed, but doing so would require convincing every node on the network to adopt the change — a nearly impossible political feat that would destroy Bitcoin's core value proposition.
About 19.8 million BTC have already been mined. Roughly 3-4 million are believed to be permanently lost — burned wallets, forgotten keys, Satoshi's untouched coins. The real circulating supply may be closer to 15 million.
The last Bitcoin will be mined around the year 2140.

📖 Bitcoin History — The Silk Road
In 2011, Ross Ulbricht launched the Silk Road — an anonymous online marketplace running on Tor and Bitcoin. It became famous for drug sales, but also sold books, art, and legal goods.
For the first time, Bitcoin had a real use case with real demand. Its price pumped. It also gave Bitcoin its "dark web drug money" reputation it's still shaking off today.
The FBI shut it down in 2013. They arrested Ulbricht and eventually seized 144,000 BTC. Ross is currently serving two life sentences without parole — a sentence many Bitcoiners consider excessive. He was recently pardoned by President Trump in 2025.

🌙 Bitcoin History — Finney's Last Contribution
After being diagnosed with ALS in 2009, Hal Finney continued contributing to Bitcoin — coding from his wheelchair as the disease progressed, eventually communicating only through eye-tracking software.
In one of his final forum posts in 2013, he wrote about his life, his diagnosis, and his hope for the future. He described Bitcoin as something he believed in deeply. He had kept his coins despite being bedridden and broke — not because of the money, but because he believed in what they represented.
He died August 28, 2014. His wife Fran remains an active part of the Bitcoin community.

Bitcoin's base layer is slow by design — it prioritizes security over speed. So in 2015, Joseph Poon and Thaddeus Dryja published the Lightning Network whitepaper.
The idea: open payment channels between users, route payments off-chain at near-zero cost and near-instant speed, then settle the final balance on-chain.
Today, Lightning has over 40,000 channels and thousands of BTC in capacity. You can tip someone in Nigeria 10 sats in under a second. El Salvador runs on it. It's still early — but it's working.

On October 5, 2009 — nine months after Bitcoin launched — the first Bitcoin exchange rate was established by New Liberty Standard:
$1 = 1,309.03 BTC.
The rate was calculated based on the cost of electricity to mine it. At that price, the 1 million BTC Satoshi is believed to hold would have been worth about $763.
Today those same coins are worth roughly $70 billion. The person who set that first price could not have imagined what they were doing.
