It has taken me 7 months, but I finally finished reading SIMONE WEIL: A LIFE by Simone Pétrement (1973, transl. 1976).
Even though I alraady knew the tragic ending of Weil's too-brief life...
...still, I feel very much like I just witnessed the death of a dear friend, admired mentor, and prophet who accurately described what we're living in now.

By Grabthar's Hammer, I am so unutterably sick of the color white EVERYWHERE during the past 10 years or so. I blame Apple. It's an aesthetic that goes along with the gray & beige trend for interior walls & floors. It's sterile and boring and reflects a society-wide obsession with the illusion of alleged "purity" and I hate it.

This morning, having finished the last available #audiobook (nr.7) of #DungeonCrawlerCarl, and against my better judgment, I decided to give STAR TREK: KHAN a chance. I resolved to listen to the first episode all the way through no matter how bad it was.
I listened through to the end of episode 4 before time constraints made me quit.

Welp. They got me again.
Last night, I heard for the first time about the audio drama series #StarTrekKhan, which tells the story of Khan's colony after the Enterprise leaves them all on Ceti Alpha V.
I was skeptical. The treatment of Khan in #StarTrekIntoDarkness left me leery of any use of the character beyond Ricardo Montalbán's portrayals. (I adore Benedict Cumberbatch, but that was an awful miscast, and the "John Harrison" plotline was bullshit.)

Talked with a friend who tried to watch #JurassicRebirth and gave up, finding it to be a stale, forgettable rehashing of its too-many predecessors.

I've only been playing #Minecraft for just over 2 years. Does that mean I'm still a noob? I dunno. But I have a world, "Tawand A's Realm," that I think of as my #ForeverWorld -- my first one, anyway. I'll stick with it as long as I can, at least until it crashes and I lose all but the first ~6mos of play. ~Six mos in is when the system started telling me it can't save to the cloud anymore. So if it crashes locally, it's gone.

I am so sorry for the loss of your family photos. That just breaks my heart.
Both of my grandmothers were genealogy hobbyists. So is my mother. They passed that love of family history on to me. Old family photos are very much a part of tracing our history. I always loved sitting with my grandmas, looking through the old albums with them. They each made separate albums for each of their children, albums that went to my parents, aunts, and uncles when their parents died.

I grew up in Germany with US-American citizenship. I was on US military bases on a nearly daily basis. We were always told that when you set foot on a US military base, you are stepping onto US-American soil. Born on a US military base to at least one US-American parent? You're a US citizen.
This is always how it has worked, and the US government has fucked this man over.

Today is #Juneteenth, the US-American federal holiday commemorating and celebrating June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned that the Emancipation Proclamation had freed them 2 1/2 years earlier.
Former slaves celebrated this day as early as 1866. From September 2016 to January 2017, activist #OpalLee, then age 89, walked from Ft. Worth, Texas, to Washington, D.C, as part of her ultimately successful campaign to get Juneteenth recognized as a federal holiday.

It rained. They didn't leave.
It thundered. They didn't leave.
It lightninged. THEY DIDN'T LEAVE.
For what it's worth, for however long it lasts, I'm proud of you, #OklahomaCity. We showed up. And like true Oklahomans, we didn't let the weather stop us!

Y'ALL.
I just got home from the #NoKings protest in #OKC.
Early numbers reports and a statement from the rally podium say THIS WAS THE BIGGEST PROTEST IN #OKLAHOMA HISTORY.
It was gorgeous.
We marched for about 1.2 miles to the rallying point outside City Hall. This took about 30 min.
Spouse & I were with 5 friends (3 more joined us later). By the time we had been at the rallying point for 20 min, the marchers further back WERE STILL COMING.
Literally every flavor of human represented.

When the 12yo is having a rough morning & cannot make herself get out of the car when we pull up to #school, we try our very best to talk it out, and when that doesn't work, we drive away from school & go to a new-to-us used #bookstore & have #coffee & peruse #books for an hour before driving back to school & trying again, this time successfully.
She was 2 1/2 hours late to school.
I'm teaching her that caring for her emotional health is more important than conformity.

They were determined that their kid would not be as clueless about it all as their own parents let them be.
I know it's partly a generational thing -- my paternal grandma was born in 1922 and until her death in 2023, she still got embarrassed if anyone discussed bodily functions in front of her.

When my daughter started asking questions around age 3, I followed my parents' example. Teaching me about human sexuality *early* and making sure I felt comfortable bringing them my questions was one of the best things they ever did for me.

When I was 4 and started asking questions about how the baby got in the lady's tummy at church, my mom bought age-appropriate books and read them with me. They stayed in my bedroom bookshelf as the years passed, we read them together,I read them alone, and both of my parents checked in with me regularly & remained open to any questions I had. When puberty hit, I knew exactly what was going on.
And since we were in Germany, human sexuality was a unit in 5th grade biology class.

I also met a guy from the #Wichita Tribe who was carrying the flag of the #AmericanIndianMovement. I didn't know the flag so asked him about it. He said, "Nobody really knows about this movement anymore, so I think we need to bring it back." I told him I agreed.

The other highly memorable speaker was a man whose name and function I did catch -- but I definitely caught what he said:
"What are you gonna do? They've been abusing you for decades, maybe centuries. And they're doubling down on it now. So what are you gonna do? Are you just gonna go back to work like it's nothing? The speakers were good and effective, especially the disabled veteran who spoke of losing benefits. I hope her telling of her experiences and concerns put a face on it all for those who don't pay attention to what the VA actually does.
I'm not enamored of the US military complex. But if our government is going to send soldiers into war and other dangerous situations, then our gov't had better the fuck take care of these people after they retire, whether they're permanently injured or not.

Just got back from the #HandsOff protest in #OKC!
Not knowing what the situation was going to be, I left my phone in the car, so no pics. All was well, however. We did have a few drive-by counter-protesters with Trump stickers all over their vehicles, but they didn't make noise at anybody. Many supporters drove by honking and waving.
Next time, I'll at least bring my 35mm film camera. Nothing like a little old-school photography to document the events of the moment. 😉

We're in a fight for the preservation of the public sphere as an arena in which human dignity is something we can actually work toward instead of its being eradicated in an era that could last the rest of our children's and grandchildren's lives.
We've never experienced the true dignity of the public as it *could* be. What we are in now is a class war to determine not whether we will ever get to experience it, but to preserve even the inadequate version of it we've got now.

One of the fundamental problems with people like Trump, Musk, Vance, Hegseth, Thiel, MTG, Yarvin, etc., is: they hold the core belief that they should be able to step out of their private spheres/residences and into the public and continue practicing their personal, private habits without constraint or consideration for the way the public actually functions.

I held desperate hopes that Zelenskyy would refuse to give Putin what he wanted.
I couldn't imagine that he would, but I also knew the pressures he was going to face today.
And he stood up to them. He gave them nothing. In the face of their puerile, incandescent, narcissistic rage, he gave them nothing.
My respect for that man grew to extravagant proportions today.
